2000 into 2001 is when the supposed hormbeam wasn't available anylonger. The Feb/2000 MkI I owned still had hornbeam as do all my older others(90,90,86).
Of course my new-run 09 doesn't have it.

dumb question but hornbeam is the dark stringer wood in the older necks, right?
Hi to everyone of this club, I'm writing this post because I need an advice from someone expert on Wal MK active electronics.
I currently own two Wal basses: a MK1 built in 1983 (with the "power off/on" switch on volume control) and a MK3 built in 1997.
Comparing them, I've noticed that the MK3 sounds better: much more presence and plenty of low frequencies more.
I've already replaced on the MK1 the two TAB1043 ICs, but nothing changed.
So, do you think should I try to replace all capacitors on the MK1 electronics?
Any other experience from someone who owns both old MK1 Wal and newer one?

First off, no pics, no bass!!!! Lol we all just love drooling over each others Wals
Secondly the push/pull on the volume knob is not a "on/off switch" but to switch to/from pick attack.
Between the Mk I and Mk III, the electronics should be the same. The only thing that I know off that may be different is the trim pots. I know the older electronics only have two trim pots and the latter has 4 trims.
One recommendation I would have if you are taking it upon yourself to swap ICs is make sure they are identical. You can't expect to swap out an air filter from a Lamborghini with a Honda air filter and expect the same performance sort to speak.

No, I'm not talking of the pick attack: on my MK1 by turning fully counterclockwise the volume knob, a switch is engaged and the bass is powered off. I've read that this switch is featured on the older MK.

The electronics of my MK3 also features 2 trims.
On the MK1 I replaced the TAB1043 ICs that, probably, were installed 30 years ago with a pair of newer TAB1043 ICs.I'm not so fool to replace an IC with a different one...

I know my ProIIe is turned on by the jack. Does that mean if you use your DI you don't need a dummy plug?Cool looking Wal btw!!! I'd love to see the other half of your pair!
You may want to contact Wal and get their opinion . May be worth sending the boards there for a check

Well, I'm not sure if the switch on the volume, once engaged, stops battery consumption. So may be I was wrong to call it "power off switch", it could be a simple "mute switch".
If someone knows, please enlighten us
Anyway, to use the DI on my MK1 I need to insert a dummy plug, and to be sure to stop battery consumption, I always unplug the instrument jack when I don't use the bass
I have never owned a Wal Pro, so I don't know if this switch was also installed on this series.

To send the boards to Electric Wood, well in the past I had bad experiences with couriers: if I ship the boards in UK and then they go missing, who assures me that Wal will sell me new electronics?

Yup that is correct on the first couple of years of the Custom electronics, the volume pot had an off switch when rolled down.
I'd read that the pots Wal chose were pretty expensive as it was, so I imagine they ended up figuring pretty quickly it was not a must have necessity.

We're up to club #65 for Tjluke
I understand Paul has an office assistant now so you should be able to get through. I had a preamp issue go unanswered two years ago, but last time I orderd parts and some other questions I was answered quickly.
