What are pickup covers for?

I think you're thinking of pup tents. ....... And I'm not certain of a direct correlation between pickup covers and pup tents. Maybe someone else does?
I had heard that in the early days at Fender, Leo, referred to them as "Pickup Tents". .... But the name was changed to pickup covers after Leo received a severe and harsh letter from the Scouts.

Also, this is exciting, I am in the middle of designing, along with a West German personable, proficiency, pickup cover professional a pickup cover, cover. We're hoping to have it on the market by the fall of 2009, 2010 at the latest. And it will be made in Germany. Because as we all know those Germans always make good stuff.

Unfortunately the scientific research has not been completed, but pickup covers will sound different depending on the following factors:
1.) If they are installed in an ash vs. alder body.
2.) Choice of fingerboard woods i.e rosewood vs. maple
3.) Scale length
ETC.
Personally I find the black plastic pickup covers sound the best for most applications. :):):)
