hmm i might be wrong as im no expert, but id say unlined ebony pickup covers.
can someone confirm this? as i would also like to know.

IMHO I tend to agree with the unlined ebony, but the clay dots are a must (face, side or both). I lost countless gigs because I did not know that

Can I make my own pickup covers out of sodium?

You could, but you'd have to play immersed in a vat of oil to prevent them from bursting into flames. I hear you get a real 'dub' sound that way.

i'm here to warn you... don't buy pickup covers at guitar center, they're extremely badly lowly assy setup, i bought one and really regret what i did...
anyone with similar experiences?

Geddy Lee uses special signature pickup covers to get his awesome tone. You just can't see them cause they're made out of super transparent material hand manufactured by monks in Tibet.

I think I'll bypass the oil so I can be on fire anytime I play.
Also, what's the best way to shield my pickup covers? I'm getting some pretty bad single coil hum.

My pickup covers keep the "digital" out. If I don't have them, I can't find the pure, analog tone I'm looking for.

Besides, how else would I keep the gremlins in my bass from running away?

I think lifting/high frets could be prevented by a neck cover. Similar to pickup covers, a neck cover would be a piece of metal that covers the entire neck. Pickup covers prevent pickups from falling out, so why couldn't a neck cover prevent frets from falling out?

Same here. I went to get a couple of new brass pickup covers (the Gundanium alloy just wasn't cutting it) and the employee was all "What do you need new pickup covers for? They don't affect your tone at all!" I ignored him (like he knows what he's talking about) and got some Bender Brass Pickup Covers. I've read that Benders both increase sustain and give your bass a godly glow, but all I got was the glow.

What a rip-off.
