I'm getting pretty close to placing an order for a custom Carvin SB5001. I am having trouble deciding on a color. I've narrowed it down to about 3. I'm looking at the deep sunset burst, deep tigerseye, and deep teal burst. The bass will have a maple neck and fingerboard and a matching headstock (flamed maple). Here are pictures of the 3 finishes I'm looking at, please let me know which you think would look good. The bass will have a black pickguard.

Thanks for your input!

My advice get a 5000. I just got the 5001 and while it was great, it just didn't have "it". I contribute that to the skinnier neck and chambers. Maybe if they did it like Sadowsky, but instead theyre just making big holes. Might as well be called semi-hollow. Tiger eye looks nice.

I agree with this statement. I've heard several 5001 owners liking the 5000 better.

Another vote for teal as well.

Thanks for the heads up on the 5001 business. 2 votes for teal! 1 vote for tigerseye. The teal is very appealing and would probably fit in nicely with my band and our music. Do you guys think the teal would look good with a maple board? Black or chrome hardware?

Teal burst with a maple fretboard. I bet that new moss green triple-step finish on quilt with a maple board would look really good. There's a pic in the latest Carvin catalog (6 string guitar) showing that color.

You know - one could go insane trying to pick a finish, a top wood, and a fretboard wood being they have so many to choose from.

I'm gonna go with the sunset or Tigers eye. I never cared for the look of maple necks with a colored body and a matching headstock. The contrast of the color with that light colored neck was just too much for my eye. Brown bodies on the other hand don't have that effect on me. But that is just my opinion.

Also, I think the triple step colors look richer than just the regular colors. When I got my Carvin Bolt Plus, I got it with the sapphire blue on quilted maple. It wasn't as deep of a blue as the triple step finishes are, but still looks nice.

I'm definitely getting the triple step if I get any of these colors. I thought the same thing... I was thinking for the future and thought that a sunset or tigers eye is a more rational choice for the long-run. Teal is definitely very appealing but I don't know if I'll get tired of it. I have a Blue burst quilted maple top Carvin LB75 right now with an ebony board. I still don't know which color to get :help: !

Some time next year you"ll wake up and find that the Teal looks dated.
Get the Tigers eye.

I agree w/ this as well . . . and w/ carvin it wont be easy to move if you wanted to sell it.

this is my biggest gripe w/ carvin. for a company where you can't try something at a store they should at least have a more interactive web site so we don't have to imagine what the bass will look like. /rant

the tigerseye out of the three. though w/ a maple fb maybe the sunset burst might look good too . . . still the TE gets my vote

good luck (and post pics when you get it!):bassist:

Hey thanks for your input pasta4lnch. If only you could build a bass and see it online before you buy it... That'd be nice! The tigerseye is pretty sweet but the sunset burst is also very beautiful. With a black pickguard and a maple board. Maybe gold hardware? What do you guys think about doing gold hardware with the tigerseye or sunset?
