What questions do you wish people would stop asking?

Do you know….insert name here…?

like you know everyone that plays music in your area.

Not long after I moved to Australia (to a smallish town) I guy I was working with asked me where in the UK I was from. I replied London and he said, "oh, I had a friend went there on a working holiday, did you ever meet a guy called (name I've forgotten here) who came from Hobart?" At the time the greater London area included a population of around twelve million people.

That, plus this:

Last year I started a thread about the forum case of this, not restricted to beginning bassists either. Backlash was swift and harsh. Before the mods not only warned me about it, but deleted my thread (actually laughably citing as offensive their own homographic misreading of a word in my thread title), I was reviled by a number of forum members.

The moral of the story? TalkBass is but a microcosm of humankind: fundamentally committed to and fiercely protective of its mediocrity, lack of awareness, and trifling, time wasting chit-chat. I'm talking 'and proud of it'.

That's what questions.

One night back in the '80's we dedicated BAD MOTOR SCOOTER to a bunch of bikers who were in the audience. After the set one of them came up and thanked us and pointed out his old lady and "offered" her to us.

How do you answer that question? The wrong answer could land you in the hospital. Lucky for me my girlfriend was there and I had a reasonable excuse. Then I got the hell outta there.

I have one, which personally offended me, "Do you think you'll know when it's time to stop playing?". This was asked by 2 distant family members. My answer was (and is) "God, I hope not". I've been happily performing for 48 years. As long as I can do it and the audience likes it....I'll still be here representing the "low end".

"Yes, I stop playing when we reach the end of the song."

I met two girls miles 800 miles away from their University (at which my brother also worked). Ends up he was their teacher. I

Met a girl visiting my city from 500 miles away. She ended up being housemates with my cousin.

It does happen.

Years ago my main bass was a Steinberger L2, The question was always,. "Hey, What happened to the rest of your bass?.." It ceased being funny after the 1st 500 times.

In the early 1980's I served in the USAF based in N. Ca. I played a series of gigs one Holiday season with a fun pickup band made up of more folks from the base. The lead singer was a super friendly big fellow who was also a fine singer.

Over 20 years later I'm at the Gloucester, Mass 4th of July parade, The Shriners in their little cars signaled the end of the event & as I turned around to exit I notice the fellow standing behind me is the singer from that band,

It was one of those surreal speechless moments when we both realized who each other were!..

"Isn't Cliff Burton the greatest bass player that ever lived?"

Yes, I've heard this exact question more than once from more than one person and any answer other than "yes he was" will result in butthurt and insults.

This question is often accompanied with "Do you know where I can buy some weed?"
