Yeah, my first bass was a Samick I got at a pawn shop in Carson City, NV. Cost me $100 and was absolute garbage.
Hope yours was better and actually played well!
Mine was a real pos from Kingston, but I learned to play on a Greco Apollo.
In 1989 got a new white "Applause" with maple board MiK P-Bass copy for around the $200 mark.
After a few rough years decided to strip back the poly to give it a natural timber finish ... only to find, er, tone-ply?
Oiled it anyway, sanded off the head stock label and had myself a 'proper' bass (then worth maybe $50?)
It must have looked the part because it was stolen a few months later.
Maybe nostalgia talking, but still consider it had one of the nicest necks.
(There's one like it on Reverb ... a "before" pic at least ... damned ply doesn't hold em strap locks too good ;( )

After coming here and asking for guidance, my first bass was a MIM Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass. It was a good start. My only complaint is the weight. That thing is heavy compared to a modern Ibanez. But P/J pickups, active electronics, drop tuner, and thin neck. It is a nice bass. I still have it. Will probably end up donating it to either my high school band, or a church.

For me it was a white Peavy Foundation given to me as a Christmas gift from my parents in 1984 or thereabouts. Kept it for about four years before trading it in.

My first was a ‘no name’ - purchased, by me, when I was 14 (1976) from monies I procured working at a local Farmer’s Market! Kept it for about 6mos... moved to an Epi hollow-body... then a RIC 4001 (in 1977)
The first bass I played and learned on was my older brother's '54 Fender Precision. My first bass I bought for myself was an Epiphone EA-260, followed by a Fender Musicmaster.
Mine was a Ibanez Studio Bass. A mid-late 80’s model. I wish I still had it but, in a way, I don’t miss it too much.
I started out on an early 80's G&L L2000 series E, natural finish 4 stringer. My Dad bought it for me when I was about 14 from a co-worker who gigged regularly in a bar band. You could tell it had been played and the guy left it in the trunk of his car year round so it went through the full cycle of Kansas City weather....really hot and humid to cold, snowy winters. My bass mentor helped me get it set up and he couldn't believe how good we got it considering the treatment it received. I didn't know what I had at the time so I sold it pretty quickly. Wish I had another crack at that one!
