What Washburn Bass Do You Own (Database)?

Of course I screwed up loading the photo (as usual), but will try again here.

And leave it to you to get a super deal on your Force 8. I thought a got a great deal with mine, but you - as usual - got a much better deal.

Here are the details you requested: 1) February 20, 2017 - Paid $310 for the bass with shipping, 2) February 27, 2017 Bass arrived via UPS, 3) Serial Number: 846140 which makes it a 1984.

Here are a couple of photos of my Force 8 WWB:

As to the Oscar Schmidtt Delta King bass, I already have one and it sounds great with a full scale neck and very beefy sound. But I've been lusting for a Gretsch bass for a long time and the Broadcaster is in "as new" condition as any used bass could be. I saw it on eBay and learned that was being sold by a music shop within one hour's drive from my home, so I called to arrange a visit to check it out and fell in love and bought it then and there. After all, if a Gretsch Country Gentleman was good enough for Geroge Harrison, then this one if good enough for me.

Here's a photo of my Delta King:

Now my search continues for my elusive Vulture II.

I hope Moonshine can get me the serial number on that Vulture II in Atlanta (I think that's where it was), and more information on that Maple neck Scavenger/Vulture photo he posted. I'm always on the lookout for maple fretboards, but Washburn had precious few of those during the '70s and '80s.
Good evening fendaholic,

Your WWB is very nice! It's very nice that your 1984 model is equipped with the soap bar pup, mine is an 1983 and it got a regular P-bass put but it play very well. Your Delta King is similar to mine as it's black like mine, but yours seem to be in better conditions as I got some buckle marks at the back but fortunately they are not too deep. The AB-90 is more similar to an Gretsch than the Delta King that is more like an Guild Starfire bass in terms of body shape. I tried an Broakaster in local music store and it's sound very well, good catch!

All the best!

P.S. I update your bass transaction data in the database and I'll publish the next update next week-end.

NOTE:
1. Some of you own some fine Washburn Guitars. This list will, however, focus on basses.
2. If you know the model series but not the actual model number, please list it anyway and we'll get to the actual name for you.. I will list them in a similar manner. You might consider posting pics to see if we can identify the exact model. Lots of experts here.

I finally got a chance to play the Gretsch Broadcaster earlier this week for about 3 hours and loved the mellow deep tone character of the bass. I also found the short (30.2"?) neck easy to play. It was more like playing a guitar than a regular 34" bass. The lows were LOW and the treble was OK.

All-in-all, a very nice sounding bass and pretty to look at...

Heya fendaholic.........glad you like your Broadcaster. I have always toyed with the idea of one myself. Hey, I noticed I did not have the color of your SB-40EQ on the database list above. What is it?
Hope all else is well-----------

It's a sunburst model. I emailed you photos since I'm too incompetent to place one of those photos here.

I'll try anyway...it's between my two White B40 "Twins" I got last year:

Uh...btw...your attempt to post was a fail. :roflmao:

You gotta see this. They did not just discover just a fossilized skeleton but a fossilized dinosaur so complete that it equivalent to a whole stone mummy! Here is the National Geographic link to the article and a picture of just the head. Gawd, talk about perfect preservation. At 110 million years ago (110 MYA) that puts it almost in the middle of the Cretaceous period).

I'll go post this in Off-Topic also for everyone else. Dang, that means a possibility for a CT scan to see the innards layout! I'm hoping!!!
Oh, jeez! This thread is supposed to be about basses. Hmmm...OJK..hey, I bet the grunting of this animal was very bassy. There....covered.

108 different models so far

NOTE:
1. Some of you own some fine Washburn Guitars. This list will, however, focus on basses.
2. If you know the model series but not the actual model number, please list it anyway and we'll get to the actual name for you.. I will list them in a similar manner. You might consider posting pics to see if we can identify the exact model. Lots of experts here.

is anyone still adding to the washy database? Mine's an XB-500, S/N is S4060093.
Heya forced ringer, Glad to see you! Look at the post of the database list above, now updated with you in it as an XB-500 owner. Please note your bass is a 1994--the 1st year of regular production for that bass.

Also in our main Club discussion thread, I have added you to the member list with the Club member number of 145. You can see that right here:
The Official Washburn Club (Part 3) see post 6383

Also, for some info for you concerning the XB-500 go to the next page there 321, post 6420 and the XB discussion continues on the next page also.

Any Washburn questions can almost always be answered here because we have so many owners and experts. Here together, we know way more than Washburn itself because we are always digging up the lost history of Washburn since they destroyed their own records in 1987 (long story). Come often and see whats up and post often with what is up with you and your bass. welcome!

Hello Washburn Club! I thought I'd join the registry. I had a bought of nostalgia at Music Go Round a few weeks ago and had them set aside a metallic blue Washburn B-2 for me. I just picked it up over the weekend, even with what appears to be 30 years of wear it has stood up well. If I'm not mistaken it has the original Grover tuners, bridge, pickups, and pots. The frets are quite worn but still plays pretty well. The sound is what sold me, this baby sounds fantastic through a fender amp and not half bad through my ampeg. I'll get back to you with the serial when I can, I know it starts with a 6 so 1986?

Heya William Shafer........Thanks for coming in. Yes, you have a 1986--please post pictures and of the serial number also. Soon as I have the serial number I can ad it to your your bass I just put in our database list (look up a couple posts to post #450).

Here is an official Washburn Club member number...
#146
You can see the whole member list kept on our main club thread right here (and where most of the action happens) --although very slow right now: The Official Washburn Club (Part 3)

SO MUCH stuff of history, identification of basses, etc etc etc has been posted here, be sure to use the Search function for the thread also.
Here is some basic B-2 info for you from my investigations, Heisenbass, a member here, also has some good insights to this model.:

1. Here is what I found on 1986's: a)all string through, b) jack may or may NOT be on the side (clear hint of more than one manufacturer) c) all using old style bridge d) all jack input has a plate or tab and e) differences in the neck joint/slight body differences and pot placement between 1986's (Heisenbass pointed out in an earlier post). Then, also, the sn 6070367 B-2 with the 3 pots and P/J pickups as the rogue issue of the year.

2. Here is what I found on 1987's: a)all out with the old bridge style and now using the SB-40 style bridge, b) all have jack plate for the side input jack, c)all have push/pull Volume pot to activate series/parallel pickup use d)all are NO string-through. All of them are like this I have found. Shows a standard design now.

3. Here is what I found on 1988's: same as 1987 with the now-standard design.

4. Here is what I found on 1989's: same as 1987+88 but all are with NO jack plate for side input jack, all with new Sharkfin Headstock instead of the pointy 1986-88 headstocks, all still with SB-40 style bridge.

5. The B-2 tuners are Grovers in 1986, in 1987 they are Grovers, 1988 they are Grovers or tuners with no name, in 1989 Grovers or Washburn tuners.

What I do not know is whether 1988-89 had push/pull Volume pots for series/parallel pickup use.
As an entry level bass of that line, Heisenbass pointed out (rightly), it saves them $ not to do string-through and so it was dropped for 1987 onward.

So 1987-1989, even if they may have used more than 1 factory maker, they made up their minds for the template because of the exploratory builds in the 1986 B-2.

I've been playing of and on since high school, nothing too serious though. My very first was a green Washburn made around '97 or '98 a xb100 I think. Sold it, don't even remember when, then had an Ibanez for 6-7 years. Had a daughter, sold the bass, got a divorce, bought this Washburn. Also, I started lutherie about 4 years ago. I'm finishing a fretless right now and starting on a headless.

Ernie ball strings I believe? I'm sad though... the frets have a lot of wear. I'm gonna play with the setup and hope I can get it working better, the D and G strings are dead above the 4th fret. If push comes to shove it'll need a fret job. I probably know what most people would say but I'm not gonna re-fret. If I can't get it working I'll do a fretless conversion.

Thanks for adding me to the registery.

Glad to have you here. About any Washburn question you can have will have an answer from someone here. SO drop in frequently, enjoy our knowledge base.
Too bad about the frets , but if you made a good deal on the bass, then it'll balance out. Hey, please post the bass you are building when done! Looking forward to seeing it, best regards.

Hey, all! Just bought an older Washburn fretless. The truss rod cover identifies it as an SB-40, but from some other threads I've skimmed here, it seems that could have been a factory mistake and it's actually a B-40. Four pots and one switch, brass nut, no active pickups, matching wooden cover plate. Amazing form and sound. I can't find a serial number. Would be great if anyone could provide more info on this beauty. Thanks!

Oh, this is so beautiful. IMO this should be a B-40, but wait till the MEK chimes in. He will know for sure. Anyway, it's a beauty, and congrats to you. Now get that Graceland album out and do the Bakiti Kumatho.

Oh that is an easy one. Heisenbass is correct. It is indeed a B-40 (from the Wing Series). No problem without having a serial number. It happens but I can tell you your bass is 1982. Why? Because all the B-40's that have the 1981 SB-40 nameplate truss rod cover appear only on 1982 basses (although most have a serial number). It is an uncommon (have 8 in my files with the SB40 name) but not a truly rare factory error. And B-40's do not have named truss rod covers actually. You will find lots of head-scratchers and interesting errors or anomalies among our beloved Washburns---kind of fun.

Sure looks very, very nice and you are lucky to have a fretless in that model. I have found four so far and yours makes 5.What strings are on it?

Wing Series B-40 basses were made for 4 years: 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and were the first Washburn elec bass to have the standard "Fender" body style.

BTW, 1980 B-40's happen to be the rarest of them all. I have 69 different fretted B-40's on file and only ONE 1980 so far! Over 2/3 of them are 1981's!! And this is over a search of many years.

Great basses!

Hey, would you like to join the Washburn Club? I can get you your official number!

Oh...can you tell us how much the B40 fretless cost? I'd think in its condition and being fretless, it would have been up there a bit. But Soooooo worth it.
