I like that fingerboard inlays! My new source of inspiration for the next project :D :D
Thanks for sharing!

I'm in paint world at the moment having just completed a joint project with another builder...
Vox Teardrop replica; Semi hollow poplar body with flame maple top, Vibtage Vox bass neck. This is a project for a well known bass player, the second one that I have been fortunate to be involved in. I built the body, Sean Paden (fretwork genius and owner of Green Guitar Project) is heading up the build and Southbound Custom is handling the finishing work... If you've never heard of Southbound Guitars, look them up; They are quickly becoming one of the premiere instrument finishing companies in the country.

(excuse the pencil marks... this was pre final sanding)

As for paint, I have a MCG 64' J style that is being prepped for paint; it will have a seafoam green finish with matching (reversed) peghead face over a three color sunburst and heavily relic'd. No pics yet). It's getting Bartolini Axis pickups with a Bartolini active preamp, Hipshot tuners, a vintage style bridge and a tortoise guard.

Next is a MCG 51' P style that's getting a candy apple red 'flake finish.

This bass has a Northern ash body with the entire bass side and a smaller portion of the treble side hollowed out to reduce weight (per the customer's request this is going to be a 10 pound bass), the neck/fretboard is birdseye maple and will have a thin coat of antiqued lacquer. The pickups are Lindly Fralins (P single coil and single coil Jazz Bridge) with concentric controls. It will have Hipshot tuners (including a D-tuner which is going to be interesting on a reversed headstock). This bass will also have a vintage bridge .

This is a long term project (to go up for sale when done) that I am finally getting around to completing.
MCG%20Reverse%20P%2005_zpsgjlvwy2h.jpg

This is a MCG Reverse P style; it has a semi hollow body (Dano style construction; hardboard top & back with a poplar/swamp ash center frame). The finish will be satin black with white pearloid binding around the top and fluorescent green purfling that is actually two .125 DR Green bass strings (the completed bass will use DR Green strings on it as well). It has a maple neck/fretboard and will use a Bill Lawrence blade style P pickup with passive controls, Black tuners (can't remember what brand) & hardware with the exception of the nickel Badass II bridge.

Last is a Guitar build...
MCG%20Mikey%20III%2001_zpsfxefzzql.jpg

This is a signature model I build for Skinny Molly (ex Lynyrd Skynryd/Blackfoot) guitarist Mike Estes. This particular guitar is a ME III and has a semi hollow (Spanish cedar top/back with mahogany frame), 25 1/2" scale maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, three TV Jones T-90 pickups with custom passive controls, vintage style tremolo bridge and vintage style Gotoh tuners. The finish is Feista red.

I am working on my travel bass project which I will post about in my travel bass thread.

I'll post after pics as I get them completed.

Cool stuff Moonshine! Just curious, have you had any issues with the Vox people? The most recent owners of that brand name are doing a Ric on anyone making Vox looking instruments - seise and desist lawyer notices etc. Years ago I only made one "version" of a teardrop bass (never considering production) which I had for sale (on a common selling/auction site) and got the letter. Like a Ric - I avoid Vox-like projects like the plague.

I got the same BS from Vox's lawyers after I did this replica of my '64 UK Phantom. I never replied, just changed my website to 'Not Available in USA'

Then I did another...

What's on my workbench: 'DagoRasp 3000' made from two 93 inch lengths of 1/2" 3TPI bandsaw blades. Take THAT Shinto!

Thank you!

I wasn't aware that Vox was doing that too... To be honest I'm not a huge fan of the Teardrop body style, the customer had the neck and wanted this body style so that's what I did.

I've always looked at receiving one of those letters as an affirmation that at least you are getting noticed.

Wicked rasp! Yes, I also ignored the letter and removed the word Vox from further sales copy. (as in, Vox-like, or based on a vintage Vox etc) Same with Ric. Only did one referencing one of those also.

Thank you!

I think as long as you deal w/a client outside of 'word-search' territory, no worries.

I just happen to have replaced my 1/2" 3 tpi blade... Hmmmm. :D

Those two basses are sweet!

Moonshine :bassist:
Thanks, yours looks great! I built a teardrop guitar with a '56 Les Paul neck back in the day (around 1966) after seeing Brian Jones with one but I'm a Phantom Fan, especially the Brit ones.

Re the rasp:
Put the blade in a vise and just snap off the length you want after breaking it at the weld, one bend does it. I used two 93" ones.

View attachment 1162421 View attachment 1162420 I had this on my workbench. Kubicki-inspired headless. Bridge/tuners are custom machined from aluminium and brass. Machining took some time with my small Proxxon drill/mill.

Wow! It's not often you see a Kubicki-inspired build! Pretty cool. Looks like an EMG pre? (knobs at least) Phil Kubicki's pre was unique - I can hear a Kubicki tone a mile away! And his tractor gears for the Factor tuner-bridge... unequaled to this day. Yours is an interesting blend of Steinberger and Factor. What scale is it?

Very nice! (including case!)

Yeah, I started building my own cases. Not only do most industry cases not fit my instruments, I just don't like the quality. I've had a lot of locales request cases, so I 'm planing a universal fit version (in the works).

A fretless bass? I know there have been fretless guitars but they are not common.

Again, yes. It's a fretless guitar. it's pretty cool and this guy dose it justice.
