Play every bass they have.

Go to the next store. Repeat until you run out of stores. Then one of them will give you a bass just to go away.

I don’t know man. Not sure how anyone makes a big decision like buying a bass without the input of strangers online who have never heard them play.

Do you buy shoes or clothes before asking the opinions of others? A bass has to fit you, how you play and what kind of sound you want. Only YOU can determine that. Look at all the people who told you to get a P bass — I played one for nearly 10 years before coming to my senses that it didn’t feel good and didn’t have the sonic flexibility I wanted. Avoiding Fender basses improved my playing and my sound - there’s nothing necessarily bad about them, but they aren’t for me. You have to figure out what’s best for you

I have thousands of dollars to purchase a bass. So, I’m here to ask complete strangers who have never met me or heard me play, how should I make this large financial decision?

Rest assured, with every suggestion you give, I will push back and explain why your suggestion just doesn’t work for me.

But yeah… all replies are welcome.

There is a hell of alot more " big money " used basses for sale right ?
Would you buy a 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 thousand $ or more , for a used bass Guitar . ?
Not seeing it , not playing it , not even hearing how it sounds until you get it delivered .
If I ever did, I would know that crazy expensive Bass I bought is gonna be mine forever , or if I'm gonna sell it, better yet , at least try to .
It wouldn't matter how much I paid for it.
when I got it , who I bought it from , why I wanna get rid of it . or what I think it's worth.
The one and only thing that really matters

I never would have known the beauty of burst & tort had it not been for the unsolicited advice of the TB masses. Not to mention just how great carrots are in a poll. Have you considered an Alembic Mark King 5 string? with the full hippie sandwich? cocobolo top, super rare fretboard made of Madagascar Vanilla Burl? With the Heart Omega? A bass so rare and expensive you might need a separate room with a special security system?

Yes — but I would never ask anyone to pick out stuff for me for all the reasons I gave you. No one knows my tastes and what feels and sounds right to me except me. It’s also my money!

Because if you ask "Do you prefer to play 'On Green Dolphin Street' A-section Bossa and B-section swing, or whole song swing, and why is it commonly variable on GDS but not on 'Song for my Father' where nobody swings the whole song but rather always does A-section Bossa and B-section swing??... ...you're unlikely to spark much of a thread.

Since I don't have any experience with "what should I buy" I can't comment. Nonetheless, I prefer to make my own decisions about what's best for me within the realm of budget, sound and feel. Oh - the only rule I start with is that I don't buy Fender basses.
