With that said, have you tried a carbon fiber necked bass? Modulus, Zon, Status. I feel that you have not posted an NBD bass with a carbon fiber neck. Do it.

What type of music are you playing? Are you looking exclusively for a 4,5 or 6 string?
I think it's best to try out some basses locally to find what you like. If you have a boutique guitar/bass shop in your area even if it's 2-3 hour drive it'll be worth it. Most basses at Guitar Center or big box store don't really setup an instrument to really give you an idea on what feels right to you. You'd have to test out some that are both in the boutique and "mainstream i.e. Fender, Ibanez etc" to get a feel for what you like and don't like. I'd also check some of the for sale in the threads and see if there are any you'd want to try. But it all depends on the tone you're after and what genre's you'll be covering if you're playing out with groups and whatnot. Otherwise, if it's just you in the bedroom find a bass tone you like from a artist and see what they play and go with that.

I was intrigued by carbon fiber neck basses. I used to own a Modulus in the late 90s-early 2000s. They sound kind of dated to me now. I'll stick with woods.

1. Get a copper colored single-pickup Danelectro
2. Switch to a sunburst stack-knob Fender Jazz Bass after you join the Play-Tone Galaxy of Stars™
3. On the eve of your biggest success, throw it all away to join the Marines (Wolfman can handle it, junior)
4. If you change your mind you can always get a namesake instrument (I think they're making Tobias basses again)

I don't know, man - I heard Chris Walker playing an all-graphite Steinberger with George Benson last month and he was able to make that bass sound closer to an upright than almost any electric I've heard before. Maybe one of those limited run Stingrays? But I would vote for something you can play before buying. I have always been hesitant to do a custom order to my specifications because you have no idea if it is going to meet expectations and the cost is high. See too many people that turn around and sell them not long after receiving. But it sure would be fun to select your favorite luthier and give it a shot.
The loudest one. That's the one to buy.

Ferner does some beautiful work. And being in Memphis, they're only 5 hours away from me. One of these days I'm going to pay their shop a visit.
If you have have thousands of dollars, buy nothing. Stop while you’re ahead.
I'm actually in the middle of that process right now. Rob Elrick is one of my favorite builders. I have owned about 5 or 6 of his basses and they're consistently phenomenal. A while back, I was asking about playing 6-string. I finally pulled the trigger and am having Rob build me one to spec. I won't have if till around the new year, but it's going to be a lot of fun to expand my horizons with that wonderful instrument.
