I was intrigued by carbon fiber neck basses. I used to own a Modulus in the late 90s-early 2000s. They sound kind of dated to me now. I'll stick with woods.
Dated in what way? Never heard that term used for a Modulus.
Choose the bass you buy the same way you choose a woman to date, marry or live with.I have thousands of dollars to purchase a bass. So, I’m here to ask complete strangers who have never met me or heard me play, how should I make this large financial decision?
Rest assured, with every suggestion you give, I will push back and explain why your suggestion just doesn’t work for me.

The only thing i could say is: when i am choosing a new bass i try to purchase something different of what i'been playin to. I mean, i'm not that guy who has 10 jazz basses or 10 rickenbackers, if you know what i mean. I like to try something new. A new mentality of construction. That is something that excites me.

Dated, in that they have more of a processed sound to my ears. Very 90s. It’s been a while though. I could be remembering it differently or something. Maybe I’ll have to get one and try it out… no wait! I see what you just did! Nice try… haha.
That's really cool and you have a track record of him meeting expectations. I figure I will do it one day. Maybe a Spector since I have one and feel pretty confident I will get something exceptional.

There are a number of factors, for me, just learning how to quantify them helped me figure out what I like.
I. Scale length. I like 34", but also own a 32" both are great for different reasons. If I had to desert island one or the other, it would be the 34…
2. Radius, nut width, and weight. I like the 12” radius 1-1/2” p bass conversion neck I just put on my p bass that weighs in a smidge over 8.5 lbs.
3. Electronics and all the rest of the hardware. Not that particular about brand or what not, just not up for stuff that doesn’t work well.
To me 1 and 2 are most important. The rest is pretty changeable if something doesn’t jive. Over all you just gotta play stuff and see what works.

I have never played a very high dollar bass (Fodera) so I can't speak to that.
What I would do is make a goal of buying 3 basses in one weekend at an average of $1500 each. You can get a really sweet instrument used for $1500. Get a P, and a Ricky, and a Stingray (or whatever you fall in love with). That would be one hell of a weekend. Bring all of us along. We will buy the beer.

$1000 to spend? ... Two years ago I bought a CIJ 57 neck for $250. ... Then Dave Reimer reminded me the heal on those necks is wider ... then I located a MTJ two tone light reliced swamp ash body for $350 and they fit perfect together. ... I then added a hand wound Pickup Wizard p-pickup for $125 a anodized pickguard and orange drops and bridge and it all came in at less than $1000 ...
