I also thing a small number of power/pre users are moving toward non-bass preamps ei channel strips, tube DI's, Mic pre's, etc I've dibbled and dabbled around with most of these and now use a PJ bass buddy.
More modeling pre-amps
Something that will take updates from the manufacturer. Something that provides models for many amps.
Of course a lightweight lowcost PC will do it just fine.
More amp makers need to talk to IK and get an officially endorsed models of their amps. The independent developers are getting really good at creating models. Manufacturers will loose out if they ignore this growing market.
Make the power amp the same form factor as a net-book, with Bluetooth. Dang, a net-book is cheaper than most preamps. You've almost made me a believer.
Good luck getting plugins to work with a net book![]()
Well, one can always dream. I'd also be worried about getting the blue screen of death in the middle of a gig.![]()
Funny story about computers on gigs...in 92-93, I was playing with a 3-pc guitar bass drums band, except the guitarist had MIDI tracks he would play on a Mac built into a rack, and we would play to a click. One night we're playing "Money," and as the guitar solo starts, the computer freezes. He looks at me with panic in his eyes and says, "What are we gonna do now?" I said, "Just keep on playing...it'll be great." And it was.
Thats another great example I had neglected to include as being amongst the "Exceptions".....
Supposedly my peoples from frozen forests of the north will be introducing something that will solve my problem shortly... we shall see...
noted..... but do you compete with the likes of THIS:

When I say I need watts... I mean I need WATTS!!
I've been a Separates / Components guy for several years, after being disappointed with most integrated heads. As I said in another thread recently, integrated heads always seemed to fall into one of two categories; OK sounding head without enough power, and nice sounding head without enough power. (with the Carvin B1500 being the only exception Ive seen)
I'm in a pretty loud band, and I tour, so sometimes I run two large cabinets. I need 2 ohm capability at least half of the time, and tons and tons of clean power. Ive also come to the personal conclusion that the power driving a cabinet is AT LEAST as important as the preamp or bass I'm using, and most integrated heads just dont put out enough juice. Most of my peers / contemporaries feel the same way.
So, I guess I'm wondering why separate preamps are going the way of the dinosaur? Not so long ago, a touring bassist had a great many excellent choices in preamps. Not so any longer. These days if you want a rackmount preamp you're pretty much limited to choices:
Sansamp RBI / RPM / PSA
BBE B-Max / B-MaxT
SWR Marcus Miller (brand new item)
Alembic
Mike Pope
Eden Navigator (shortly to be discontinued)
Just a few years ago you had at least a dozen more choices from Ampeg, Aguilar, Ashdown, Trace, Peavey, SWR, GK, Epifani and several others.
These days a lot of touring guys I know are turning to studio recording channels... often reluctantly, owing to the fact that they're usually much more expensive, and their superior sound qualities are often lost in a live setting. Offerings from Avalon, Millennia and Universal Audio being good examples.
Aguilar made some of the greatest tube preamps Ive ever heard, and the Ampeg SVP-Pro is still my favorite choice.
What do you think TB? Were preamps such a specialized market that lacking sales necessitated discontinuation... or was it something else?
Anyone wish there more standalone preamps available?
