Will the ciggarette prices get you to quit

How about cars? I want cars banned. They bother my smoking.

Oh, and microwaves. They destroy the vitamins in food.

And cruise ships. They're floating petri dishes.

Kill off the children. They spread mumbs, measles & chicken pox.

historically, when a drug becomes class related, it's discriminated against and usually criminalized. charles whitebread made a prediction that cigarettes would eventually be outlawed because as time goes on they increasingly become class related. business owners that would otherwise allow smoking in their establishments are forced to comply with regulations and may feel pressured in ways they do not think is fair or just.

cigs are, however, totally disgusting and extremely harmful to one's health and surrounding environment. i've recently quit for the second [and last] time. take a drive around the inner cities and the old guys sitting in front of shops and playing chess don't have cigarettes in their hands, the ones that did aren't around anymore, you know? that's not strictly universal, obviously, but let's be realistic.

That's a government smoke screen. They tax it because peopel are addicted to them and they know they'll buy it anyway. Take away the high taxes on alcohol and tobacco, and most governments would be in trouble. It's another fleecing.

Health concerns are the only thing I agree with you on here. They should absolutely remain legal. Do you really want to live in a nanny state that tells you what you can and can't do?

AMEN! And it's a great freedom to have! All these stupid nanny laws just cost us money and do nothing to protect us. Seat belt laws for adults? Please. I can ride a motorcycle that's a 100 times more dangerous with nothing to keep me from falling off the thing and skidding across the ground, yet I am forced by law to wear a seat belt when I get into my car? Utterly ironic and full of hypocrissy.

Laws should exist to protect innocent citizens from others, not from themselves.

Trying to say that smoking doesnt have an effect on others? Guess all that second hand smoking stuff must be made up :rolleyes:

I will say that I dont think it should be banned, and doubt it ever will be. And having to pay a bit more is hardly the government banning it, esepcially when you guys are still getting off lighty with how much stuff costs in the US. And I'm not a smoker, never have been. Worked for a number of years in a bar, both before and during the smoking ban in public places in the UK. Can't say it was a bad thing at all. Only job hours that worked with my education, so sadly I had to put up with smelling like an ashtray and coughing up wads of black flem every other night. Not to mention the oh so pleasant job of cleaning out ashtrays and sweeping up the mess from people who just ditched their fag ends.

So anything that doesnt encroach on the civil liberties of others should be legal? So stuff like PCP, herion, meth etc should all be legal too? Just wondering how rigerously people will stand by a statement like that when taken to extremes.

Unfortunately, there's a large group of people, a majority in fact, who love to impose their opinions and beliefs on everybody else. These people would love nothing more than to have their opinions, beliefs, and deities sanctioned by their government.
