Because they use pre-recorded music. A live music festival should have live musicians.

I know it won't be popular but I agree. I can appreciate hip-hop acts that use live bands. I don't consider someone rapping to a track a musician. A performer sure, but not a musician.

No, not at all. I've been listening to it since the 80's.

Interesting to me how some current opinions of hip-hop sound like my parents' generation and their opinions on rock & roll back in the day. You'd think musicians would be open-minded about music.

For me its about the pre-recorded tracks and not playing live music. Why should I respect it? I don't. I also don't expect anyone to care about my opinion.

I admit I've not heard of many of these artists. Who knows, some of them might be great. It's sorta cool that a few bands from '69 playing. They should lump them all together on the same day.

Was Richie Havens rock and roll? Arlo Guthrie? Ravi Shankar? Joan Baez?

Back then there was more musical variety - but also a lot more unity of culture and purpose with the original Woodstock Festival.

This new one is just another mega concert. Entertainment plain and simple.

They can't recreate the vibe of that era or the meaning music held for the attendees at the first one. The world has changed and the magic of that time has long departed from this world. "The child is grown the dream is gone. <we> I have become comfortably numb."

Meh to any music festival. Much rather go to a show/concert with 1-3 acts. IMO you get much better performances and you get more for what you pay for. Just my opinion.

Also for those who don’t think hip-hop artists should be on the bill...I’d like to see any one of you create a hip-hop set list good enough to get you on stage at one of these festivals and say it isn’t hard work or “real, live music.” Sampling isn’t the same as playing an instrument but it stil requires skill, patience, hard work, and a lot of listening to music. It’s not much different than playing the same 1-4-5 blues riff that’s been played for ages, you’re just sampling something with a bass/guitar instead of a computer. And once the sample is done, there is still a live act involving live vocals. Are singers not producing live music because they are just singing along with a band?

Sampling might take skill, but in an objective measurement, that skill doesn't require as much time and commitment to develop as actually learning to play an actually instrument. I think to suggest that the are "different but equal" (not quoting you here, quotes just for emphasis) is nonsense. To suggest otherwise is relativism that just tries to obscure any objective measure of talent. It's almost like saying the person who takes a photograph of a painting is similarly skilled as the painter.
