Worship Bass Pedalboards

Our church has some pretty prevalent low end :) Powered subs are cross'd just right, and the overall sound is heavy with bass and drums. We do in-ears, so no on stage monitoring (drums in a fully enclosed booth).

'73 P-bass with flats > Boss Tu-2 > Sansamp BDDI > Board :)

Our bass player yesterday played through an MXR Bass Compressor and I was really impressed. Really sounded great, and I have to say that his tone wasn't too great beforehand. I'm really interested to see what a nice compressor could do for my tone.

While I don't get to use the stable as much as I'd like here it is:

I run my bass (Fender P or J) into MXR Bass Octave Deluxe> Catalinbread SFT> MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe> MXR Bass Envelope Filter> Line 6 M5> Ernie Ball VP Jr with Planet Waves Tuner> Aguilar Tone Hammer.

I run the Tone Hammer direct into the house in a BIG room, sounds great!

I'll throw in my 2 cents on delay

This past weekend the band played "The Lost are Found" which starts out pretty low-key. In order to fill that "mood" I used an EHX Bass Micro-Synth to create a swell for each note and then a delay after it to add some extra "oomph" to the sound and avoid the unnatural cut-off that the BMS does when the signal gets too low.

delays are actually pretty handy. not just for the electric guitar.

.....can't help with the flanger/chorus

For awhile, I used the delay as a reverb, for when the guitars drop out and I'm doing the main parts, like intros or what not (because the Boss Reverb pedal was $10 more than the DD3, and the DD3 is more versatile). I use the chorus pedal a lot for in between songs, like when the WP or pastor is speak before/after a service, or during verses that are mellow. The flanger I use on a song we are learning "Soul Cry" by Misty Edwards, as well as some songs I'm writing.

I played in a 3-piece rock band for years, so there were times the guitar would drop out to focus on singing, and it was just me and drums, so I had to add things to fill in the gaps, which pushed me to use different effects and playing styles. It really caused me to step up my game.

I'm running a simple setup that works well.

Boss Me50-b > diy fuzz > sonic stomp > DOD gate > GK goldline.

I run mid shape, overdrive, and reverb off of the boss. The fuzz gets used on swells with the boss's volume pedal and builds. and the sonic stomp works like a boost for me. The gate just stops noise during breaks and prayers when I'm not playing.

The MilkBox is a great Compressor! I sold it a while ago though. I thought I needed some more pedalboard space so a MXR M87 is in its place... I'm super happy with the MXR but wish I had kept the MilkBox lol. It took me a while to find one with the cow print!

Huh... that is exactly the opposite of the signal chain I would choose based on those pedals. I think the VT's strength is really in having fuzz or overdrive run into it, and compression always sounds best before dirt to me.

But hey, if it works for you, that's great.

I'm still working with the order. I took this pic right after I got the last pedal to finish the board and the order is based off of what i had read on suggested pedal order. This is my first board so i wanted to at least have a basic idea if what's usual. The more I read though the more I find the usual isn't so usual anymore. My next thing was already to try the compressor first and if you say the fuzz is cool in front of the VT i will have to try it. Although I like what I'm hearing with the VT first.

I've gone through a lot of different pedals and settled on this. Bass > Pitchblack > Soul Preacher (Compression) > Holy Fire (Overdrive - Always On) > Catalyst (Fuzz) > Boss CE-5 (Chorus) > VT Bass Deluxe (Always On) > Amp/DI to House. We play contemporary worship like Chris Tomlin, Jesus Culture/Bethel, Jeremy Camp, Casting Crowns, Third Day.....The Holy Fire and VT seem to cover all of what I need for the songs we play. I use the others as needed to add that little something extra but I have to say it's pretty rare that I do.
