Your favorite accordion players?

Not quite an accordion. But the best player I've heard in recent times for that sort of instrument is Sharon Shannon.

Sharon is a great player of the button accordian. I play in a couple of Irish Sessions every week (tenor banjo and cittern) and at one we usually have two or three B/C box players, one or two C#/D box players, maybe one piano accordion player, a few concerterna players, and the usually array of flute, whistle, fiddle, and pipers. I had the great opportunity to play with Sharon and her brothers just as she was emergining in the media.

Last thing I expected to be doing this morning: rocking out to a bunch of accordion music. But, thanks to this thread, I've found it's actually not a bad way to start the day.
There's some really killer music on here!

Funny, I can romp around stage for hours & hours with a bass, but I'm not sure I could get thru one fast song on accordion. Some of the songs look freaking exhausting!

Kepa Junkera is one of my favourites accordion players. He starts from the basque traditional music to mix with many other traditions and musical genres, as he does in this song. This video is from 2001, and if you like Game of Thrones, will be able to find the location of Dragonstone (min. 1:02).

So I was playing this clip this morning and my housekeeper (from Spain) zoomed right in on it. She also said the clip with the dancing girl beating the triangle was "bad girls"

I love Irish sessions. Got really into all things Celt when I lived up in Boston back in the 70s. There were some genuine to the bone Irish pubs in the South End that hosted sessions and traditional music. (Speaking Gaelic was also much in evidence in those places.) I'd drop by when I could for some fine music and a glass of the creature. In a session I'll usually just sing or tell a story since my command of the instrumental end of things is sorely lacking when it comes to that although I got pretty good on the penny whistle for awhile..

Met Miss Shannon once and got to chat awhile back. She's an absolute doll. I really like her. And her music. She's the real deal. There's few people I've ever met that just radiate absolute joy when they're playing. And she's one of them.

Back in the day in Holland I played a Zydeco/Cajun band, highlight of which was supporting Flaco Jimenez. I miss it, would love playing in a band like that in the NYC area. That said, my entries for squeeze box bad-asserie: Johnny Meijer, from 1947

Not saying Gregory Grene is one of my "favorite" accordion players per se (though he's certainly talented) but he's worth mentioning just so TB members can hear The Prodigals' bass player Andrew Harkin, who's a bona fide monster.

This is based on my vast, expansive knowledge of two, count them, two accordion players, Weird Al and Lawrence Welk. And I've never heard Lawrence Welk play.

My knowledge, or better put, ignorance, likely mirrors 95% of the American public.

My mom traded in her accordion to buy me my first bass (a brand new 1980 Fender P). Not only did she start my life long journey as a bass player, but she also ended the old family tradition of us having to endure her somewhat rusty accordion skills once a year on Christmas eve. For those reasons I must say that my mom is my favorite accordion player.

(more Recent) Sometimes Tatar music sounds like cajun....... I always wanted to change this and get it cut with cajun players.

I'm not sure how no one has mentioned John Linnell of They Might Be Giants but in addition to being my favorite accordion player, he is also my favorite Contra Alto Clarinetist.

Gogol Bordello has an accordion player that is crucial to their sound. It's not an exciting or sexy instrument to play live, but I think it can work great with certain types of music.

EDIT: What's your favorite accordion for metal? (I'm not proud about that, but someone had to ask.)

I would say this is the best accordion for metal.
