That is a good one, glad you put it in. You really have to look for the good stuff in later years. Saw him play once with a bunch of other Jordaan luminaries. Famous for guiding inept band members during the gig "F! Mothe#%cker. D7! Coc&#$ker", and so forth all the way through Sweet Georgia Brown. And heard a crazy story about Archie Shepp standing at his front door, wanting him to come out and play, and Johnny refusing to come down because he was vacuum-cleaning.

Manuel Guerrero. Taught Flaco Jimenez how to play and was one of the first to export Conjuncto music to Europe-"El Sargento Que Canta" while serving in the USAF. I'm currently in a band with his son, Manny Jr. who is a really great drummer here in South Tejas.

I am kind of surprised how in 7 pages of accordion topic there is not a single mention from the classic accordion masters from the oberkrainer world.

In Slovenia for example, we have the highest amount of accordion per capita in the world.

One of the very best accordion players in Slovenia is Denis Novato (among MANY OTHERS):



But polka is not the only thing you hear here. You have whole masterpieces written out, one of the worlds major oberkrainer classics written by world famous Slavko Avsenik, this song is one of the best oberkrainer tunes ever written and performed:



And of course, you can't go by without the one and only, "Na Golici", written by Slavko Avsenik, a song better known worldwide under the name of "Trompeten Echo" or "Trumpets Echo" in english, which also happens to be considered the most played instrumental song in the world:




And there is tons and tons more.

John Linnell is probably a distant 5th or 6th on my personal list of Favorite Contra Alto Clarinetists (after Anthony Braxton, Vinny Golia, Steve Norton, Ben Opie...and I'm pretty sure Ian Underwood played Contra Alto Clarinet when he was with the Mothers) but I still tip my hat to Linnell just for having the audacity to try!

Very cool!

So I'm playing all these posted Tex-mex/Tejano accordion videos and the wife is saying "Now I'm craving Mexican food. We're going to Mario's for dinner tonight" (our favorite Mexican restaurant). Fine by me, I'm craving it now too.

I've had a chance to gig with some really good young guys over the past few years. Rob Curto stands out.



Will Holshauser from Brooklyn is good. Louis Simao from Toronto is amazing but I can't find much live stuff for him because he's usually gigging on one of the 3 other instruments he plays professionally.

i was actually in a polka band for a very little while ... " the Velvet Touch " ....

the purple velvet tux w/ ruffled shirt , did get me a little extra attention from the ladies a few times after the gigs ...!! ha ... not at those gigs , but the post gig bar stops on the way home ...!! gotta love the 80's

Being an oberkrainer in Slovenia or Austria, you get ALL the ladies. :cool::laugh:

Too bad I'm not an oberkrainer myself LOL.:bassist:

Well, when I was a kid my older brother played Chordovox in a HEAVY rock band. Ran the key side through a 50w Marshall half stack and a Leslie, and the bass button side through a Sunn tube bass amp ( I seem to remember it being a 200s) with a matching 2x15 cab. Sounded effing awesome!!!
He later gave me that Sunn rig (plus a 1x15 Sunn cab) when I needed a second rig to cover gigs.
Lovely brother, and a thumpin bass tone.
I feel I lucked out! :)
