I think most of us who prefer road worn or vintage aged basses buy them for US, and give a crud what the audience thinks or sees. Though I do get giddy if another musician or viewer comes up and asks about the bass for sure..but totally not the reason.

Summarizing:
Generally there is no problem turning the volume down for stronger amps to bedroom levels
Powering e.g. 200 W cab with 300 W amp is ok when volume is low (like at home)
Final loudness comes from combination of speakers and amp, wattage is not a defining factor

I've come across really good offer for Ashdown Mag 300 Head (500 PLN = 130 USD) and Hartke 4.5XL (500 PLN = 130 USD). The owner of Ashdown assured me the head is fine for metal drummers and gigs - although in "only" has 200 W / 8 ohms when used with single 4x10 Hartke.

I'm curious what do you think - Ashdown Mag 300 Head + 2 cabs Hartke 4x10 400 W - is Ashdown (300 W / 4 ohms) powerful enough for 8 speakers?

Also I found 1x12 Aguilar GS112 (300 W / 8 ohms) for 425 USD and they seem to be great - this would be for home practice. I wouldn;t combine it with 4x10 Hartke.

My Kustom KXB10 is 10 W with 10" speaker. I'm tired of it because of the sound, its flat. I'm upgrading my BTB 625ex to Nordstrands, using DG Harmonic Booster, MXR Chorus and would really like to hear the difference clearly and appreciate more. This is my motivation for getting better home practice setup. I hope Aguilar would let me enjoy long practice hours more

Unfortunately the problem with GK 1001 is its age. There is only one available at the moment - from 1990" and the guy selling it has a lot of negative opinions for selling non conforming products, so I'm a bit affraid.

Hostility suggests provocation. No reaction suggests indifference at best, or a mismatch between the music and what the audience wants/expects, no matter how good the performance is.

When bands bomb, it's likely because 1) they're too loud and are an annoyance, 2) they're playing material with offensive lyrics or which is a completely wrong genre for the situation, 3) the mix is bad, so the audience is hearing a severely unbalanced and consequently unpleasant presentation, or 4) one or more of the band members' behavior is offensive.

@egroeg By the sounds of it you probably just have a loose solder joint that needs re-soldered. It wont take someone long to isolate the issue and repair it. Should hopefully be cheaper than a new set of pickups anyway.

I've learned something about push knobs, almost a rule to live by. If a feature of an amp uses a push knob, then I will set it once and never change it. For instance this applies to the "pre/post DI" button on my GK MB200 head. It will be "pre" forever. Another example is my Radial JDI box. If I've pulled it out of my bag, it's because I want the ground lift function. Maybe there's some user interface principle at work here.

Also, I will always accidentally touch those knobs while setting up, and get them wrong.

So I choose the setting for those buttons, and apply a little bit of hot melt glue around them. The glue can always be peeled off, but meanwhile, I never worry about them.

20 years ago I bought a bunch of drum loops from Beta Monkey…blues, reggae, ska, jazz. They are still around.

At the time, Sony still owned Acid, which in 1998 was the first DAW that allowed pitch and time stretching of loops….Windows only, though. They were not just drums, but included all sorts of melodic loops.

I also got many free libraries that came from UK-based magazines like Computer Music and Music Tech. Each issue came with a DVD with some sample packs, free plugins, instructional videos, etc.

I haven’t gotten any for at least 15 years.

I didn’t even own a DAW back then, I used to load the loops into the sample RAM of a Yamaha Motif workstation. In those days, the vendors shipped CD and DVDs, no it’s all just downloads.

I kept all the CDs and DVDs, but only as backups…I had moved the files onto my computer as soon as I got them.

I believe the Bicentennial Thunderbirds were also wired with the shunt method. These were not too dark sounding even with all 100K pots!

Yeah, I was just pointing out the Eden at 98 lbs was about as heavy. I lugged both plenty. I just thought the Eden sounded better, but they weren’t that different. You can pick up a TVX all day for $2-300.

Boss LS-2. A -> B -> Bypass gives you 3 different volume levels. It's also a nice buffer at the start of your signal chain. I'm using mine to slam an Effectrode LA-1A. I have clean, a little bit of hair, and full on overdrive in one pedal.

Three things wrong about this (depending on the jack)

1. It can damage the plastics that are used on some jacks, causing them to crack where the threaded nose exits the body.

2. It can get all over the PCB of PCB mounted jacks, making a mess of things. The contamination can attract conductive debris which creates new issues.

3. It doesn’t fix the real problem anyway.
