I am surprised that there is not more comments on this bass. I totally forgot about it until I got to play one two weeks ago. I must say that it soundet that good, that I could not let it go. What a nice woody ton the G3 delievers. Are there more MD G3's out there?

Great bassist and generaly musician. I had to prepare two of their sings for my club resident band, and my guitar player could never play "in the pocket" unison with bass guitar for Staying Alive. Turns out, those unison bass and guitar lines were both played by Maurice, and that's why they sound soo good. He was multi instrumentalist with great feel.
Sadly, in 70's he became heahy drinker and could not play bass live any more. Brothers gave him rhytm guitar, with instructions for sound guy to just turn him down if he is too drunk to play. Big talent that could have done much more....

I took the medium scale Jag neck off mine because I want it for another build idea - it has such a great feel. I had a reverse short scale neck and much to my surprise the neck heel was a perfect fit into the Squier body and I only had to slightly move the bridge saddles. The balance now is much better. Plus I can use long scale strings. Looks great and is fun to play.

And now to find the right body for the original neck.

My eq2 made noise.. I recorded it and showed the company… they told me to just “eq the noise out”… nothing was connected. Just the pedal itself. Eventide power max v2, one spot, cioks dc5, it made noise on them all. I even used a furman sb8 power strip / conditioner AND busted out my rack mounted furman (that thing usually always fixes any noise).
I got rid of the EQ2 and the Empress is never leaving my board.

I don’t understand why more people don’t love it… but I’m also an A1 sound engineer, so I’m picky. It was either this or a Broughton HPF, + LPF pedal plus a separate eq pedal.

Nice bass, it looks the MM is actually in the MM sweet spot which is uncommon on a lot of jazz mm J basses.

I would like a pickup with a coil for each string; each of the 4 outputs goes to its own 3 band eq with sweepable mids.

The sixteen trimpots can sit hidden away, with just a volume and passive tone out front.

Finally, that G string will sound like the rest of the bass.

Have you tried Ignissor within Anagram? It's the third block in my signal chain and after taking the time to really dial it in, I have zero desire for any other compressor. I say this as someone that's owned more compressors than I can even remember (Cali76 multiple times, Empress multiple times, two different Keeley models, Doc Lloyd Photon Death Ray, Diamond, Diamond Jr... the list goes on...).

The amount of foam stuffed under the strings in front of the bridge should be a lesson for every bassist who owns a precision. I've got some foam under mine but not that much. I think I'm gonna add some more. Also, my guess is that that bass is loaded up with a set of Labella flats.

Broken thirds work in any mode, except perhaps Locrian. Broken fifths, the interval is too far, and you start making melodies.

The only way to get an exact match is to first spray both woods with the same opaque base color, like an opaque cream or eggshell white. Then spray the amber-tinted clear. That will make the colors match. But you will lose the beauty of seeing the grain of the wood through the finish. It will be an opaque amber.

That Brulee is a beautiful finish. I've never seen one in person but, if it's like a lot of other EBMM finishes, seeing it in person blows away the pictures of it.

Hey John;

The carbon fiber TOW "backstrap" will work with any kind of truss rod. It doesn't interfere with, or have anything to do with the function of the truss rod. The backstrap only prevents stretching of the wood at the very back of the neck, to prevent the dreaded Ski Jump/12th Fret Kink.

So yes, go ahead and put it in under a standard DADR truss rod. Either from the top, down deep in the slot under the rod, or from the bottom in a skunk stripe. The important thing is that the back strap ends up as close to the final back surface as you dare.

As others have said, it depends on how much the other musicians, especially the drummer have control, but I played 3 hours of hard bop in a bar with 2 horns, piano, and a bebop drummer once. There was a miscommunication on the amp. I powered through, it sounded great, but I was sore after. I had a residency years ago with baby grand piano and the world's most tasteful drummer and it was awesome playing without an amp.

BUT: the technique of the bassist is key. A lot of volume and projection comes from the technique of both hands and not everyone can do it. More to the point, someone coming from BG and bringing their approach with them could definitely not do it. There are really good doublebassist who probably couldn't and definitely wouldn't want to do it, because their playing style is softer touch and more amp dependent (a valid choice).

The other MAJOR factor that keeps me from leaving my amp home, even when I think I might be able to, is the room acoustics. Big vs Small is definitely a thing, but bass is loud in some rooms and quite in others. I've had the acoustic sound dramatically change first set to second, because there were more bodies in there to soak up the sound. Speculating here, but probably winter clothes vs summer clothes of the patrons could be a factor. The room is the big variable that you don't control.

In the name of science, some bold acoustician should design an experiment to measure sound absorption with totally nude, skimpily-clad, 3-season attired, and winter-bundled audience members. To cover all possibilities, band has to do the same. We need some solid answers here!!

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve gigged regularly on DB, but I have a cannon (New Standard Cleveland ply with Spiro Mittels or Pirastro Jazzer steel strings). I definitely got by amp-less indoors (playing with “musicians who play guitar and drums” NOT “drummers” or “guitarists”), for jazz, Irish and various ethnic musicks in a corner with pointy end pin dug into wooden floor. This wouldn’t work with the Kay, Engelhardt or most other plys I’ve played, you need a live one. And ya gotta give a strong percussive start to the beginning of each note, I plucked with index/middle doubled up at fingerboard’s end. Arco projects even better, it’s hard to ignore the steel string “swarm of angry bees” sound!!

And my experience as a listener to many unamplified bands at fairs and festivals is that at a distance the strongest “DB dB projection direction” with no room reinforcement is definitely from the backside of the bass.
