Song(s) that you wish to be able to play someday?

Malaga Virgen by Brand X. I'll be working on that one for quite awhile.

Hey, that guy who flew the airplane into a building in Austin was a bassist...

+1! I have almost zero respect for any of our nation's politicians, and would love to see some political change. That being said, it is NEVER permissible to harm innocent people to try to change the political scene. I'm just thankful that he can't hurt any other people.

Give me some progressive rock/metal masterpiece albums.

Hate to add another post, but I want to bring up Gentle Giant's Free Hand. Quite a nifty lil' album.

Of the list above, my vote went for The Yes Album.

Albums that absolutely blew you away

Great thread! I'm sure many of these have been mentioned earlier, but here's my list: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Flight of the Cosmic Hippo Brand X - Moroccan Roll ELP - Brain Salad Surgery ELP - Tarkus Frank Zappa - Hot Rats Frank Zappa - Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Genesis - The Lamb...

    What is overplaying ?

If your playing becomes detrimental to the groove, then it's overplaying.

Victor Wooten is second teir skill wise now

Not trying to bash Masaki too much, but listening to him reminded me of listening to an annoying guitard shredder. Serious wanking IMHO, but to each his own.

Which famous bassist are you most like?

I'd say I'm an inferior mix of Boz Burrell and John Paul Jones. I like to use busy parts when applicable, but more than anything else I'd rather have bass parts that fit, regardless of degree of difficulty.

    Favorite Weird Song

+1. Ummagumma had some pretty neat (albeit messed up) tracks, and "Several Species..." is probably my favorite of the album.

    Rush or Dream Theater?

I like DT, but I have no hesitation in giving the nod to Rush. With Rush I can sit through the whole album, whereas I struggle to do this with DT. Plus, it's hard to argue against a band with 19 studio albums.

    songs you HATE

I'm feeling full of hatred today, so first here are the artists/bands that I absolutely hate: T-Pain Nickelback Lady Gaga

As a bassist, who are your favorite guitarists?

My favorites guitarists are usually the guitarists who can work well in the band without being the sole center of attention. My list is: Martin Barre (his work with Jethro Tull is underrated IMHO) David Gilmour Steve Howe Alex Lifeson Kerry Livgren (not flashy, but he knew his role and played...

    Geddy Lee overrated??

Fair enough. While I don't completely agree with you, I can see where you're coming from. We can definitely agree that his rhythm work is just incredible. It's amazing...we just had a discussion with opposing views without any flaming (not to say that we've flamed each other ever, but there...

    Geddy Lee overrated??

Alex Lifeson can't solo??? I'll agree that his early solos weren't great, but there are some good solos on Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. When I hear the solo on Free Will, the one thought that never crosses my mind is "Wow that solo sucks". To each his own I guess.

    Jeff Schmidt (upside down bass)

I gotta admit it took me awhile to notice anything weird about the stringing. My dad plays a left handed bass strung right handed, so growing up I got used to seeing it. I can see how it would be confusing though.

    Jaco ?????????

    Idiots guide to Rush

I thank God everyday that my dad is a bassist, which gave me tons of exposure to Rush as a tot. Sweet memories... I would say a great intro would be permanent waves, but really I don't think you can go wrong from A Farewell To Kings to Moving Pictures. If you're going to be listening to...

It's not my cup of tea, but I'm sure there are some good bassists doing death metal.

    Best bass for Rock/Prog/Alt? J v PJ v Ray

Ha, well I thought you were keeping your Am Deluxe. If you're gonna sell the Am Deluxe, I'd go for the Marcus Miller. You should never have to go without the Jazz:bassist:

    Best bass for Rock/Prog/Alt? J v PJ v Ray

Coming from a Jazz Bass fan this will sound weird, but I'd go with either the P or the Stingray. Your Am Deluxe Jazz will give you all the Jazz style tone you could want, so I think it'd be better to get a bass with a unique and versatile tone. I'd lean towards the MM because the Humbucker...

Give me some progressive rock/metal masterpiece albums.

-Kansas Masque (some might try arguing that it isn't full out prog, but it's prog enough with plenty of tasty basslines) -Genesis from the Peter Gabriel Years (especially Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway) -ELP's Brain Salad Surgery -Brand X Moroccan Roll (ok, technically this is Jazz...

Which Instrument Do You Think Is Best To Learn Alongside Bass?

Personally I'd recommend learning to sing. For one thing, bassists who can sing are rather valuable in a band setting. Also it will help develop your ear which helps if you ever want to play a fretless bass.

Bass lines that are just sooooo much fun to play

The Lemon Song by Led Zeppelin (cliche, but I can't help it...JPJ is the man:bassist:) Cousin Dupre by Steely Dan Hemispheres by Rush Continuum by Jaco Pastorius Lastly, Two Cents Worth by Kansas

Arrogant ( and downright rude ) Bass Players

I can understand why a bassist wouldn't be in the mood to talk after a long gig, but personally I find chatting with fellow bassists (and young men/women who want to learn the bass) to be one of the best post gig events. There's something that soothes me when talking to a fellow bassist who is...

    Best Bassist...

Tough question. I can't choose a favorite or best bassist, but the one I admired the most while learning was Geddy Lee. Not only are his bass lines fun to play, but the tightness he has with neil peart is something I aim to copy with any drummer I gig with.

Bassists you think more should know of....

+1 Percy Jones never seems to be mentioned, but his work with Brand X is just plain tasty. I love his work on Malaga Virgen (frankly I just love Mooccan Roll:bassist:) Now for a completely different addition, I would put Kansas' Dave Hope on the list. He's not a flashy bassist, but he...

When you inadvertantly pay homage to gollum by calling your bass "my precious". I'm glad my girlfriend is a musician...only a musician can tolerate my bass obsession :bassist:
