Why do so many 5 & 6 string players NEVER use their low B?

Actually, they were tuned E to B. Not C. Kind of surprised I typed that. Must have been impaired. Sorry for the mistake.

Why do so many 5 & 6 string players NEVER use their low B?

When 5-string basses first came along, they were to E to C.

Are you a 5 string or 4 string player?

If I remember correctly, they started putting out 5-string basses in the early to mid '70s. I wanted one BAD. At that time they were tuned B-G-D-A-E. Didn't end up getting one until the late '80s. By then the B had been moved to the other side of the neck. While I do not still have my first...

What Instrument Did You Primarily Play Before the Bass?

I had an old acoustic guitar when I was about 8. I played sousaphone in the Jr. high through high school marching and concert band. Got into bass guitar in the high school jazz band.

What's the deal with "flashy" bassists ?

Maybe they just feel music different than you do. As long as the groove is still there without distracting from the song, does it matter what road a person takes?

Based on this thread, it looks like there are a lot of sub-par employees working for FedEx in everybodies area.

    Fed ex sucks!!!

I thought the reason for paying for shipping was for the buyer's convenience. The ads these shipping companies run paint quite a different picture than actual reality.

    Fed ex sucks!!!

The summer of 2018 FedEx came to my house 6 times and then, all of a sudden, they couldn't, wouldn't be able to find my house. It took 3 weeks to get an amp from sweetwater, who, by the way, was NO help at all. I kept watching them drive by and not even turning on a blinker. I live up on a hill...

Are on board active preamps really necessary ?

I use my onboard preamp to change my tone for different songs. It's so much easier for me to add or back off what I need to change right there in between notes. Possibly a key factor for using active preamps is to run your amp flat. Maybe not, but that's what I do. Nobody has ever told me my...

    Do you hate music store?

In my area there are a few smaller music stores and one slightly bigger music store. The bigger store is more than happy to order anything I want. The problem with that is he has to wait until he has reached a minimum dollar amount before they will ship. That has taken up to two months before...

    Pair of Mesa Subway 112s?

When I got my Subway D800+ I just got on of the 1x12. It was pretty nice. I figured 2 would be twice as nice and I think it surpassed that mark. Mesa has new cabinets in the subway line. There is a 2x12 and it is considerable less expensive than 2 of the 1x12s. As far as comparing them to the...

    Unplayable Fretless Bass

I would re-examine the truss rod situation and make sure that it was indeed loosening. Mostly, it sounds like the nut slots are cut too deep and the bridge saddle set too low. Do you know if it was a conversion or originally made fretless? If it is a conversion, check to make sure the neck isn't...

Sell me on a 5 string.

Don't know what your requirements are other than 5 strings and active preamp. You might want to consider weight. They do make some HEAVY basses. If you're young, weight won't matter for a few years. But if you're not... NS Design, Schecter, Ibanez, they make some lighter basses. I think...

Trying to get that distinctive fretless bass sound...

Yes. The end next to the pickups and the nut slots deep enough so the string is .010 to .015 off of the fretboard. I got to thinking that I wasn't very clear on either of those. Sorry.

Trying to get that distinctive fretless bass sound...

If you deepen the nut slots to about .010 to .015 and set the string height at 1/16" at the high end of the fingerboard you will get the Mwah you're looking for. Make these adjustments after you have set the intonation. Flat wound or round wound.

Does a High Quality Bass Improve Our Playing?

I have always felt that tone comes from the players hands and that the wood is insignificant. I do feel that pickups and electronics components are an important part of the equation. I've seen test on the wood. I still prefer mahogany bodies. My ears have come to their own conclusion on the...

Guitar insists on playing down a half step - What's the Deal?

I use a tuner, compressor, octave, overdrive, Q filter, and flange. The thing about pedals is that they are like cologne. Too much just stinks. Says the guy with a board full of them. lol
