    Interviewing Bassists Stories part 2

Wish I had something more to say than "I enjoyed the clip," but there you go. Incidentally, I've also picked up a copy of "In Cold Sweat," which I also really enjoyed. I can't believe you made me respect Gene Simmons as a person. :)

    Our (second) debut show

Hope nobody minds, but I'm using this thread to work some things through in my head... as well as get advice. I've been asking myself what I want to get out of this gig, why I'm so pumped for it, and why I think this might be the start of something... Let's be clear, I'm not delusional. I...

    Our (second) debut show

Great advice, thanks very much! The "one show a year" thing was more of a false start -- the first gig was supposed to lead to more, but it just didn't work out that way. That's why I'm considering this our "second" debut show -- technically it's our second, but for all intents and purposes...

    Our (second) debut show

I can't help but feel this will be a "gigs gone wrong" story by the end of this thread... My band had our first gig in September 2011, a single set as part of a charity festival. It went well, we left on a high... and completely fell apart afterwards. 2012 was basically a write-off. Now...

Bad habits you had to unlearn

Practicing without plugging in, which I didn't even realize was a problem until I read this thread and put 2+2 together... (so that's why I'm playing too hard with my right!) Curling my thumb over the top of my fretboard. Damn guitar background... Drinking while playing. Well, we all have...

    Who counts?

I don't consciously count the "1-2-3-4" beats, but there are a few songs where I need to count the number of times I repeat a particular lick, just because it's intentionally at odds with the main melody line. "Okay, once... twice.... three... now the second part once... twice... play down...

Bassists Who Don't Need Another Interview

I think the problem isn't the same interviewees, it's the fact that they're always asked the same questions. Nothing unique to bass or even to music, it seems a lot of interviews with creative people always are some variation of "where do you get your ideas?"

    Interviewing Bassists Stories part 2

It took me a week to get through these two threads, and I loved every moment of it. Tom, I myself am an ex-writer (although in a different area entirely) and I understand all too well what you went through. I was never anywhere close to your level of success, although looking back I did some...

Ever set up a gig, and the band bails on you

Not exactly the same situation, because I wasn't the one who set it up, but yeah. We had a gig set up as part of a charity festival, and it went as far as our name showing up in the promotion (which was a huge deal to me because it had never happened before). Then, one month prior, the...

    Time waster flags

This describes my current situation perfectly, except I hesitate to call myself a "pro," even in quotes. :) We've been together for a couple of years now, and at first we were all going in the same direction. But as time passed, I found that my original goals weren't enough for me... I wanted...

The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 4 - We can count to four!

Haven't been around in a while, but I'm still busy playing those roots and fifths. :) After three years of playing, I've decided to start taking lessons. It's time for me to hit that next level of mediocre -- the guy who can't play but knows better.

    Duck Dunn has passed

I remember watching "Blues Brothers" for the very first time, and being blown away by the bassman. Never again picked up a guitar after that -- bass all the way. Even more amazed when I realized I had been digging his grooves most of my life. R.I.P. Duck.

What Gig bag do you own/had? Do you Love it or Hate it?

Another satisfied iGig user here. Good protection and plenty of space -- fits everything except for my cab. :) Great customer service too, answered all of my questions before I had even placed an order.

    DR Strings? 2 separate problems!!

I just tossed my second set of DR Lo-Rider Stainless (5 string) after the B string broke while I was winding it. Read the instructions very carefully, and there was nothing there about right-angling the string before snipping (although I did angle it before putting it in the peg). It may be...

    REM calls it a day

Was a huge fan of them in the late 80s, early to mid 90s, but found myself enjoying the last few albums less and less... didn't even bother after "Up". Still, sorry to see them go. Mike Mills is still one of my bass heroes.

"Check In" here before and after your gigs, Set #2, the sequel!

And checking in after... we got on a half hour late thanks to a bad schedule, and followed an 80s cover band that packed the dance floor. Our music isn't the most danceable, so we cleared the floor by the third song. :) The gig had everything you could expect, from an indifferent crowd, to...

"Check In" here before and after your gigs, Set #2, the sequel!

I've waited two years to be able to post in this thread. 7:00 tonight, my band takes the stage for the first time. Nothing big -- a set during a dragon boat race. Playing for free (because it's raising money for cancer research), but we're part of a pretty decent lineup. May only get to play...

"Studio Musician" or "Band Member" - Which are you?

Much as I'd love to be a studio player (especially after having my first recording session last week), I work much better as a band member. Being with the same group of musicians over a period of time has really allowed me to grow as a player.

    Singing and Playing...AT ONCE?

+1 to everything in this thread, especially "practice and keep practicing." I've just started singing backup with my band, and even then only on a few songs. All of them are songs I know very well (both bass and vocals), and none involve any fancy playing. The most difficult part of the...

I missed the bus too. Had a late rehearsal the night before, so Friday I took a brief nap after work... and woke up Saturday. :rollno: Next time!

Assuming this is still happening, I can upgrade my response to "Yes, I'll be there". As I know virtually nobody in the local scene, how will I know who you all are? -Chris

    New Ibanez!!? SRA500?

For whatever it's worth, I've been playing a 2009 SR505 for over a year now -- moderate use -- and the finish is fine.

I'd be interested if it happens. There's got to be at least a half-dozen people who post here regularly.

The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 2: Bigger! (Better, not so much.)

I used to play the guitar, so I recognize a C, G, Bb, and Dm fingering -- assuming that they're the textbook fingerings and not higher up the fretboard. Not coincidentally, those were the only chords I knew when I played guitar. :)

    Canada's Long & McQuade Strings?

I picked up a set of L&M nickels and have just started playing them. They do the job, but I can't say they're anything special. Are they still made by Dean Markley? I'd like to know too.

    Suggested Cabinet for a LMIII

For whatever it's worth, I'm playing through a Traveler 115. Got it for the low end and light weight -- and it delivers on both.

Do you Google potential band members?

Yes I do, and I know they've done it to me. It's how I found out that I was auditioning for "real" musicians as opposed to some "wank in the garage" types. It's also how we learned that the quiet, well-spoken guitarist we were going to audition turned out to be a white supremacist...

JONATHAN HERERRA IS LEAVING BASS PLAYER!!!!

I'm one of the newer players (2 years), and I started subscribing last year -- even at the inflated Canadian rate it was still cheaper than off the stand -- and I'm currently debating whether or not I'm renewing. I don't like that I've been getting the "Your subscription is about to expire"...

Official Markbass club - it just keeps on going!

Joined the club a couple weeks ago, with a brand new LMIII and Traveler 1x15. Amazing power, and I was able to dial in my ideal tone very quickly. Sounded great alone, pretty decent in a band situation... ...or so I thought. I play a 5 string Ibanez (SR505), and I'm having a heck of a time...

The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 2: Bigger! (Better, not so much.)

Justifying my number... First practice after a month off. We go through the usual playlist, and I'm feeling pretty good, getting into the groove... then about the fifth or sixth song, something isn't right. As soon as the vocals start, I realize -- it's me. I'm not right. I'm playing the...

    Your latest achievement.

The big success -- joining my first band a month ago, and learning that I am in fact good enough to play with seasoned musicians. Minor success -- back when I started bass (two years ago), I dl'd a tab for one of my favorite songs, tried to learn it and failed miserably. Almost depressed me...

How do you know when you're ready to play in a band?

Same position as OP. I have a hard time making it out to any of the local jams (timing doesn't work with small kids in the mix), so I posted an ad on a local musicians BB. Hooked up with a guitarist and a drummer, had our first jam last week. I was nervous at the start, but loosened up pretty...

Where do you want to go?

Quoted for "Me Too." This was my goal when I first picked up the bass. I'm never going to be rich or famous. I'm not even likely to become a "name" in my immediate area -- it's just the nature of things. At best, I'd like to be someone that the famous have heard of -- "oh yeah, I know that...

    Finding People To Jam/play With

I've been trying the ad route, without any luck so far. Really depends on timing -- and how picky you are. If I wanted to play screamo with 15 year-olds, I'd be in business! Talk to your teacher, try to do some networking that way. Failing that, I've been told that open mics or jams are good...
