Who here prefers passive Jazzes to Precisions? Let’s give the J some love!

Here's my #1 Jazz, been with me since 1989, It replaced my Yamaha BB1200S. I didn't own another active bass until I picked up a 2006 Jaguar which I never play...

    OLD "new- again" Dads here?

One of my best friends from college is 63ish with a 4 year old daughter. I tease him about getting into the bounce house and doing backflips with the 25 year old dads. You're gonna do great.

    P bass or thunderbird

I mostly play my 62 Jazz bass and I find it really easy to switch to the Thunderbird (76)because of the similar nut width.( and maybe the offset body?) I rarely play my 71 P bass as it feels quite different. A bit more chunky or raw. Just something to think about. To me, the Thunderbird is a...

Found this bass, want to know if it's salvageable.

Nice find ! love this kind of stuff! Your are right on track with cleaning the frets. You say it plays good, so the neck is probably straight enough and the skunkstripe damage is only cosmetic. Just re-glue it(clamp it so it is flush). Leave the paint damage as is. Rock it.:bassist:

The Sweet-Spot; how many basses do you own and how many basses are too many basses?

I think I have a dozen basses at home. Maybe eight are worthy of passing on to my kids. I Know I have too many because 2 have been on loan to friends kids for years, And I just gave my nextdoor neighbor and my daughters boyfriend basses just to clear some space.🤪

    Does anyone not enjoy Jaco?

Back in the early 80's when I was really trying to become player I never listened to Jaco. I was into Jimmy Haslip, Abe Laboriel, Nathan East, Chuck Rainey, Will Lee..I tried to play like those guys... Anyways, about 15 years ago I'm buying an Amp from some guy in LA, after playing a bit he...

    Tom Brantley 1962 Jazz Set

The pickups showed up yesterday and into the 62 they went today. Okay, so as to my impression. First, these have a very full tone ,they are well balanced and have a definite punch and clarity. I had a "WOW, these sound great" moment. The are different than the Antiquity's. I think they sound...

    Tom Brantley 1962 Jazz Set

I just ordered a set today for my 62. I currently have SD Antiquity II pups in it which sound great but I'm hoping for something a bit more tame like my 64 Jazz with original pickups sounds.

    Jeff Berlin

Jeff was a teacher when I was a student at MI (BIT) in the early 80's. He always seemed cool and patient with a very lost 19yold me the few times I dropped into his pod. That's all I got..

Would you make a bass you like fretless if you don't use it?

I voted "go for it" but then I remembered I once had a very nice green BB1200s I bought new in 1984. I had it converted to fretless.. For some reason it was just lifeless. I regreted doing it and gave it to my nephew. So maybe it's not a great idea, maybe some good fretted basses don't make...

When mere words fail...Fender Custom Shop

I love the recycled/reuse thing. I made my nextdoor neighbor a gift bass from the redwood rafters of his 1920s bungalow. Did on the cheap for about $200

I'm building a new "bass" from an old P.O.S. one.... Advice please?

Just get the electronics and strings at your work. If you currently have strings just buy a single B string ($6).Go old school and boil your old strings to rejuvenate them. Get a new jack(again 6 bucks) and wire it direct to the pickup, bypass the volume and tone. That will save you about $15...

Do you own or want to own a bass of your birth year?

Yes, I have a 1964 Jazz. Bought it in 1990 for $500 not because it's a birthday year but because it's a great sounding and playing bass. I do think it's fun that it's the same age as me though.:)

Help me choose my first P-Bass!

That's a long time to be playing without ever playing a P Bass! With your budget you're gonna get every suggestion possible! Last year I picked up a 1983 Ibanez Roadstar II for $80 and an 1983 SQ series MIJ Squire for $90 off Facebook Marketplace. Both of these are insanely good p basses. I have...

    60s Fenders in the 70s

I started playing guitar around 76 or 77? I remember my friends and I just wanted what our favorite rock stars were playing. So I needed a sunburst Les Paul like Jimmy Page or Ace (had no idea about years etc). When I started playing bass I wanted a bass like John Paul Jones. Again, I had no...

Question about fender Precision claimed to be ‘64

Lots to indicate it has the bones of 63- 64. Like others have said router hump, Kluson tuners, clay dots(last year), hootnany button scar, E string tuner crack (common in this era), looks like a wide nut width and "laminated" fingerboard... Other than refinish, replacement guard and nut it...

    Creating space

Sometimes we jam with friends and it just doesn't click. Maybe you guys are just in different places musically. If you weren't offended by his comment and you want to keep playing together, ask him what he is thinking. Suggest creating a song list. It's another fast way of getting a read on what...

    Ashamed

I'm not sure if this is a humor thread or seriously looking for answers, or? But while your list of gear is a bit long, it spans several years, AND you are moving it along, not hoarding it. It looks like you tried about 12 basses last year. That's hardly a time suck on your life or something to...

When you buy a vintage bass, do you change the strings?

For players grade "Vintage" basses, like the majority of us have here, I would like to think we treat them as any other gear we use. New strings, Whatever.... NBD. I did it ! I got my 1975 4001 Rickenbacker Azureglo!

Yes it did. It was significantly less than other Azureglos currently on the market and in line with the more common finishes with similar damage. :bassist:

    NBD. I did it ! I got my 1975 4001 Rickenbacker Azureglo!

Yep, that's the ugly;) This damage looks like it was caused by a guy trying to gain access to the truss rod nut by digging out some wood beneath it with a screwdriver or dull chisel and punched through? Idk, just added character like the scars from the broken headstock on my Thunderbird and E...

    NBD. I did it ! I got my 1975 4001 Rickenbacker Azureglo!

After loosing a couple of Ebay auctions last month, I headed to a recent guitar show determined to come home with an Azureglo Rickenbacker. I didn't really think I would see one, but there it was. Excited, I picked it up, played it, then saw the damage from a bad truss rod adjustment. I walked...

    Fender Precision 63 enigma

I'd guess your bass is the result of the previous owner simply reshaping the body to customize it. It was just a popular pastime to do that kind of thing back then to everthing. Not unlike adding flares, mags and scoops to your early Corvette. The filler is probably just Durhams wood filler which...

    Fender Japan JB62

Those are great basses. Check out Reverb, Ebay, your local Craigslist. MIJ basses used to $500-$800 a few years ago, expect double that today. A good alternative an early 80's Fernandes Revival, probably the best vintage Fender copy ever and can be found under a grand.
