    Loudness issue

Lol yes. We need to use ears to gradually increase each amps/cabs volume level to its limits. It's difficult in text to make suggestions and cover all caveats.

    Loudness issue

Hi op. Do you have any other amps or cabs? If yes, then do some experiments. Otherwise do a comparison of front end input vs fx return input with the HB. Do either of these inputs cause the speaker to struggle or at least move quite a bit? 4 or 500 watts (amp near clipping) to an efficient 12"...

What do you do when the recording engineer doesn't want to use your "sound"?

I let my "trusted" engineer do what's needed. However, our brother OP is in a synth sound band. If he had known going in that the dry signal is the only track to be used in the mix, they may have played more productive/different bass line. If I played an open B ringing out for every 15 seconds...

    IEM issues, Can't hear myself

I've used KZ and Shure in ears among others. The Shure win hands down as live IEM against the KZ. I found the KZ too bassy and lacking mids. The Shure are also better at isolation too. My mix had vocals, horns at 5-10% of bass volume. Keys, guitar at 10-20% and percussion was muted as I can hear...

Why Vacuum Tube Amps Are Louder: The truth of Natural Even Harmonic Phase Rotation

This doesn't work at all anymore with current production tubes. I've tried pretty much all of them. Closest you can get these days is with a pro tools plugin called "kinky twister". Make sure to get the official version from Western Electrics site.

    Plastic Vs Wood P.A. speakers

The differences in PA cabs sounds is not wood vs plastic. The differences are vast though, and as mentioned by others, the higher models (in some brands) are plywood vs their lower models (cheaper drivers etc) in plastic.

    Best Value Amps and Cabs

For some, watts/$ is the bang for buck. Could also be features/$ or desirability/$ or tone/$. For those who want warranty and peace of mind, only new gear from reputable companies will suit. We need to meet our minimum requirements for whatever our purposes, then compare the bucks. I can...

Is it just me or are newer lighter rigs just lacking 'balls'?

If all parts of your signal chain are designed well, you can still get significant variations in tonality. Strings, pickups, preamp, and especially the speakers are all designed with some tone goal. Much less so with power amps, and the designers do not pick an output class based on tonal...

Help with new tone cap for Sire p7

Is the Sire p7 an active? If it's active then the cap may be on a circuit board. If that is the case, then just tell the tech that you want more tone cut available.

NBD Fender 2011 American Special Precision

Nice bass. I have a 2011 as well. I much prefer the neck on these than the standard P. I had thought about mods but left everything standard. The stock pickup is nice. The only change I might have made was to put ultralight tuners for better balance. It's my number 2 bass now so I'll leave it as...

Do Imports Devalue The Domestic Model Basses?

Had almost the same customer as you. They didn't want a discount though, they just wanted an unopened box. I explained that it was unopened until their demand to see it. No, they just wanted an unopened box. Sigh.

Is it the end of Amps and cabs? In Ears required for gigs now.....

I'll add my vote for an IEM future. Was definitely sceptical about it at first, but was sold after the first gig a few years ago. We were a loud salsa band, about 10 of us on stage. Since my IEMs blocked out all the noise (lots of percussion), I could keep the volume low and heard everything...

Do you notice a tonal difference from aged wood "vintage basses"?

Things change over time, for better or worse. Acoustic instruments have more direct correlation between timber aging and sound production. In electric instruments, there's likely to be more variance from other forms of aging such as fret wear, pickup age (magnets, coil tension, potting...

Tube DI vs. Mic'd Cab: What Am I Missing?

It's worth doing play practice through just the DI into your monitors. No amp, no cab, no pedals. Just your bass via your recording setup monitors. Adjust your stingray tones and maybe playing style to sound well both solo'd and with tracks that you are working on. This way you are playing for a...

I'm trying to make a bass horn... it is a little complicated...

Before spending any more money there are many free ways to learn cab design. Please spend some time with the simpler methods. To learn how to craft a specific or specialized speaker, you may have to first try designing a HiFi speaker. It's a path of more defined goals. It doesn't matter if the...

I'm trying to make a bass horn... it is a little complicated...

What drivers are you planning to use OP? To answer your q regards to 3 drivers powered by 1 amp, yes there are ways, but It depends on the drivers. Is the 3rd driver a mid or tweeter? As for the diy aspect - good luck. Agedhorse mentioned "simple, elegant well executed" - which is quite a bit...

Anyone surprised by the return of headless popularity?

I'm am Ibanez ehb user. Was a P bass user. I like both soundwise. If you have any issues with your current bass neckdive/ergonomics/weight and can put aside traditional aesthetics (at least temporarily) I would encourage anyone to have a try. I don't think I will go back to old style ever...

Ibanez Ergonomic Headless Bass (EHB) club

I have added the 4mm vinyl dots some folks mentioned as side markers. They are great. Still loving this bass. I'm getting more "at home" with it. The weight and ergonomics were awesome from day 1, but the flatter fingerboard (previously a P player) was the only thing I had to adapt to.

Thinking about getting a "good" bass

It's unlikely that this will be the last bass you buy. All good advice here, but you may not know yet what bass your hands are built for. So all the testing in the world right now will come from a position of inexperience. Either precision or jazz bass is a sure thing to get your playing going...

    12" Speaker Recommendation

If you want to spend the least amount of $, get the pyramid for $40. You then have a decent bass amp for home use for less than $100 CAD. That's unbeatable value. If you want a much better amp sound, you will have to spend 100's. If you want a slightly different/better sound than the cheapest...

    12" Speaker Recommendation

Get the pyramid. It will work fine. Agedhorse: I've made speakers (amateur) for close to 40 years. I still learn more all the time, especially from folks willing to share their knowledge. From you I have also learned patience and resilience in forums. This is not a knock on op. It is a genuine...

    12" Speaker Recommendation

I think you over thinking this. The frequency response is dependent on the cabinet as well as the speaker. Most, nearly all 12" speakers will have a fr spec something like tens of Hz (eg 50Hz) to a few kHz (eg 5kHz) all give or take a bit. Both the turbosound and pyramid will work with the...

Has Gretsch been lying to us for over a decade?

I don't think so. Respectfully you sound logical and fair. I believe if you found the Chinese manufacturers pickup manager and had them make a video unwinding and saying that it's a single coil, I can envisage the "lobster paid him off to avoid being proved wrong " comments. No matter how...

    12" Speaker Recommendation

Last time I played a rumble, it wasn't the 75w model you have. It was not a flat response sound. It was on the boomy side. That's with a stock 15" speaker it had. You can see specs of a speaker at the manufacturers website. However it's a bit complex as no one spec will mean much alone...

    12" Speaker Recommendation

Rumbles are ok. My opinion is just get any cheap 12" and stick it in. It won't be ideal response but since you are looking at reasonably low volume practice/home it won't really matter. Then you will have a working practice amp and can wait for a more ideal speaker to pop up on the market some...

Has Gretsch been lying to us for over a decade?

I have myself made such a coil. Over 30 years ago. I was young and didn't have much resources. It would have shown on magnetic viewing as a single coil. Even the pic that user Epdo posted of the pickup windings cut in half may not have shown my join. Having said that, I don't believe any cheap...

I built a replica of Geddy Lee’s 70s treble cabinet

I'd suspect the custom built cabs for geddy were made by folks who followed the ts parameters, but cab size based on the tl606 EV. A change in port area and or depth would achieve a desired outcome. Edit: love your work and passion.

    Who cares about 90's basses??

I have a lower version, xb400 I think. Mid 90s, its light, balanced and was a great live workhorse. The recorded tone was blah bland (mia P sounded distinctly significantly better) but live - gave drummers a happy face compared to other basses.

Double Bass One 12 or two 10s?

1x12 (and neo speaker) is my preferred form factor for db, bg or even eg. I never want to carry anything else ever again. I have always had foh if it was ever needing to be louder. It appears that you were leaning towards the 2x10 - go for it! You can always pay your friend to make the other...

Did an outdoor gig (over 32 deg C, 90 f) in direct sun for 2 of the 3 sets. Apart from sweating behind the bass i was very glad with the comfort this bass ehb1000 had for me in these conditions. Drummer and keys/guitar all pretty happy with the sound. Feedback from muso audience was positive...

One rehearsal so far with ehb1000 and I like the sound of the bh2's.They sounded full and rich, both alone, and in the mix. Side fret markets are 10/10 for camouflage rating. I assume someone at ibanez wasn't doing their job and this design slipped through. On a strap, I found it comfy and...

Hi, pickup q on the ehb1000. What are the available replacement options for 4 string non-multiscale model? I have heard samples of the 1500 with the Nords and L.e. Lobster's vid on the Aguilars and they do sound great. So what are the options for the non-ms models? Thanks.

Cab designing, Xmax + port velocity wrt harmonics

My question is about cab design software modeling and whether it has any correlation with real world distributed loading (multi frequency loading) or is it purely sine wave models. Are we using the single frequency situation as our design goal and therefore underestimating a drivers...

Cab designing, Xmax + port velocity wrt harmonics

Today, I was playing around with winisd for a new cab for me. I was doing my typical attempt at best compromise of SPL/size/weight for a given driver. As usual, I spent way too long juggling bass extension vs box size vs practical port dimensions (size & velocity). I got to wondering about the...
