What's your local music scene like?

This is a very interesting thread. Thanks for posting the question. Where I come from, a couple of years ago there was no realy local music scene. Music basically consisted of commercial oriental popstars. In the late 80's some metal bands started emerging and concerts were organized and...

Used to say that too until I heard the 8 inch ;)

    Monitors under $400

Yamaha HS50M. Those will give you a nice sound, but not enough bass. I don't think a speaker with a cone smaller than 8 inches would satisfy a bass player.

I got the TC-Electronic Powercore compact. and it comes with several bundled plugins. One of them is Tubifex. Has been doing everything I want for recording. I don't like to use soft plugins live or during practice though.

Haven't gigged for almost 2 years and I am on here frequently, and learning something new every day. So by the day I start gigging again, I'll be kicking !

The ever so popular slapping problems

There's no right or wrong here IMO. This is how people come up with new techniques. They experiment, see what sounds good and is comfortable. Whatever works for you without hurting yourself is the way you should do it. But to cut a long story short, most of the people find it easier to slap with...

Pro Tools help. new user...ticks, clips..

Mute the track while you're recording. Turn the mix knob down to the left, maybe at around a quarter. Set the latency to 512 or 256 samples. Make sure you don't let your computer go to sleep. If it did already, try opening the System Configuration and change the clock to SPDIF, then back to...

    Craigslist Bass player wanted ad

This is quite sad. I remember when I was 12, it took me a couple of months to convince my parents to buy me a used classic guitar. When I switched to bass 3 years later, I spent almost 8 years playing on basses that weren't mine. I'd spend hours after school was over just to use the school bass...

    Open E is clangy

Try a lighter gauge. Or make sure the action is set correct. It might be due to E-String hitting against the frets. Had that happen on my bass.

    I just can't stand a thief!

Back in '98 I had my Ibanez stolen at a gig. After I went offstage to talk to friends and some of the audience. By the time the entire show was over, I went back behind the stage to find it was gone :S. One doesn't learn for cheap I guess. Ever since I keep my eye on everything when I am out.

Have u ever played bass with a cajon, instead of a drummer?

The most famous local band over here doesn't even have a drummer. Two percussionists. One of them with a cajun and it always gives a great groove no matter how big the gig/concert/festival is.

    Bribing the Musicians Association agent.

So what I've gathered here, is that there are organizations out there like the FCC and ASCAP that are somehow concerned with copyrights ? They make sure people don't make money of others "sweat" ? That night we were playing only original music. And I am sure the club had to bribe that guy to...

Best bass lesson's on-line for free?

+1000 Marlowe IS the man ! I have played bass for almost 15 years, and only recently have I improved my playing through this guys lessons. Each video shows a great lick and then a "slow motion" of it, so you can fully understand how it is played. Check out his youtube channel.

    Bribing the Musicians Association agent.

Yes, I think that's the purpose it is meant to serve. Supposedly everyone can get a membership if he/she passes a certain test. I guess, there is something similar in US as well then ? As for controlling content, there's a another organization that takes care of that. But they are mostly...

    Bribing the Musicians Association agent.

I live in Egypt. The middle east mainstream music is very limited in terms of variety. In order to overcome this, most smaller clubs and pubs that provide live music, hire underground bands that they can afford, and which play alternative music. A couple of days ago I was playing a couple of...

How old were you on your first gig?

My first gig ever was when I was 12 in 1993. I played guitar back then. The cool thing was that it was in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where there's no such entertainment at all. So we had a huge audience. My first gig as a bass player was in 1996, I was 16. That was the big band of the school...

Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

    Time to change battery ?

The thing is, I do have passive basses too, but for some reason I just prefer playing the active ones. I like their response more I guess. A fresh new battery every gig ? I'd have to put a budget for that :P. What I think might be a really good idea is supplying the bass with phantom power...

    Time to change battery ?

My two main basses are equipped with active electronics. A couple of weeks ago I went to the rehearsing studio and realized the P-Bass was running out of battery, it started doing these noises and the tone was losing low end. The nearest market wasn't very near, so I had to take out the...

What's the best compliment you've ever received as a bass player?

I am very paranoid about hypocrisy. That's why I rarely see anything as a compliment. I very much appreciate it when people honestly tell me what they think of my playing. This could include criticism and/or compliments.

    Recording my tone

I'd suggest you experiment with kickdrum mics for miking bass amps. There are also cab simulators that might help you achieve a very similar sound to the amps without the need for miking.

    Best cables?

The slightest hiss/hum might not be audible to the ear. But after applying enough compression and/or amplification it could cause significant noise. I don't use quality cables myself, but that's because they're extremely expensive where I live.

    Free software thread/club?

I think that this is a very complicated issue. I am guessing there are quite a few reasons why a company would do that. They might not want to release their "cookbook" to everyone so competitors wouldn't be able to copy off their hardware. Or it could be a pure business thing. Maybe they've...
