I use D'Addario Chromes only because my fretless (SX) has a rosewood board. If it had an ebony board, I'd be using Nickel Wounds. I prefer the sound of Nickel Wounds, but I'm not willing to sacrifice the fretboard.

Their styles are at opposite ends of the spectrum. I've seen some of Jaco's playing, but I'm more familiar with Geddy. Could Jaco have replaced Geddy in Rush? Hell no! Could Geddy have replaced Jaco? I doubt it. I'm a Geddy fan.

I've tried DR, Ernie Ball, Elixir, Blue Steel, SIT, and Dunop strings...but I always go back to Carvin (or Fender, they have a similar tone) strings. The Carvins produce a huge tone, especially on the low B. I believe they are made by Labella.

How about the STK-J2 stacked or the SJB-2 single coil? It sounds like the SJB-2 is a hotter, more bottom heavy version of the Duncan Designed. The STK-J2 is a humbucker with more wiring options. Thoughts?

I have a 2009 Carvin fretless B5, which is sweeeeet. I've had a few others in the past, but I've sold them. It's a matter of ordering the correct body wood, neck/fretboard wood, and pickup combination. Also, make sure you send it back before the 10 day trial period ends.

I have the Phase 90. It nails the Stranglehold and Have A Cigar bass tones, but also sounds cool with slap/pop techiques. It does not create any overdrive.

This is my Carvin B5 Fretless. It features a mahogany body, maple neck and ebony fretboard. It's active/passive, and the humbucker can be tapped. It has a sweet tone and I love the versatility.

The ones that I've tried, and disliked were: Dightech Bassdriver, Sansamp Bassdriver DI, Sansamp VT Character, Line 6 Bass FloorPod, and the Ashdown distortion. The only two that I've tried and liked were: Boss Bass Overdrive and the MXR M-80 DI+. I prefer the M-80 for its tone options and...

I purchased one when they first came out, but I got rid of it after a couple of weeks. I didn't like the tone at all. The clean tone was bland, and the AGS mode was weak. I'll stick with the M-80.
