    Jazz Audition reject

I would hardly consider that Hard Bop is beginner friendly. The changes are often complex and sophisticated, and more often than not played at fast tempos. And no, I'm not one of these "theory is useless" guys advocating so called freedom, I actually said that theory is indeed important and...

    Jazz Audition reject

I understand that reading might be important for some, but why is it so hard for these same people to imagine that some are doing just fine without it ? When playing Jazz, you're mostly improvising, ie. playing something that is NOT WRITTEN. In that case, why would reading be that important ...

    Jazz Audition reject

I only played in quartet, and we always exchanged ideas by playing them to the other members. If we played a non original tune then we'd get familiar with it by listening to the recording. And if you're a decent jazz musician it should not take you hours to figure out a lick by ear on your...

    Jazz Audition reject

Well the first thing I wrote in this post is "Of course everyone has his own definition of jazz" and I added "in my book" in the paragraph you quoted, so what I said is nothing more than my own opinion and was not meant to be presented as a fact.

    Jazz Audition reject

Of course everyone has his own definition of jazz. A jazz tune is made of chord changes and a melody or head. You don't need to read the notes to comp or improvise on changes, you can just read the chord symbols (you of course have to know what to do with them but that's another topic)...

    Jazz Audition reject

Well it's easy to learn shapes that help you see the basic notes that can fit the chord, for an A7 chord you can use the A myxolydian mode as a basis, then if you are a more advanced player you can add outside notes to your taste. I think it's very helpful to know theory when you're playing...

    Jazz Audition reject

I don't understand why you would need to be able to read in order to be in a jazz band. 99% of the time the chords names are written above the staff, so if you see A7 and know how to play it on your bass, what's preventing you from playing a fitting bassline ?

Cort Action basses: they play incredible!!!

I think they're very underrated. When it comes to entry level basses Squire and SX are the names that come up the most, but Cort Action basses are also very good. I have an Action V and it's a very nice playing bass.

Upgrade for a jazz bass : new pickups or preamp ?

I have a Classic Vibe JB, and I would like to have a more defined sound, especially when rolling off the tone knob. With the actual configuration, the sound gets muddy easily if I try to smooth it out. More tonal options would be cool too, the only sounds I like to use right now are the bridge...

    Question about 70's pickup placement...

I tried doing a search on this topic but couldn't find an answer to my question. I really prefer "round" sounding jazz basses tones, and I'm not very found of the very trebly and aggressive ones. Problem is I really like the way the jb classic 70's looks, compared to the classic 60's which...

Bass for playing deep house/nu jazz

Thanks for the replies ! I still can't get that tone with my jazz. Here's the problem : to get that nice slight growl, I have to add some mids. But when I do it also adds some sort of "zing" to the sound, which is not what I'm looking for. Even when rolling the highs off it's still there...

Bass for playing deep house/nu jazz

I love deep house, a style of music that often has interesting bass lines and really really makes them shine. I'm looking for a bass that can deliver that smooth and full sound that is so often heard in this genre. Here's an example : . The G&L L2500 seems to fit the bill quite well, but I...

Question about EQ pedals (ie Sansamp Tech VT)

I'm new to this type of effect and I would like to know their purpose. Do they act like a preamp on an active bass (boosting or cutting different frequencies) ? If so, are they still interesting to use with active basses (they already have a preamp) ? What are the advantages compared to the...

    Jacopoxy

Please help me replicate that tone (Incognito content)

I'm trying to replicate the tone of the bass on the song "Still a friend of mine" : I'm playing on a Squier JB classic vibe with daddario XL rounds. Tried every eq and pickup volume settings I could think of, different playing positions but I can't seem to get a similar tone. What I hear is...

    Official Fender MIJ/CIJ club here!

I have a question : Fender Japan really makes accurate instrument reproductions, adding details such as the copper strip on 62s, bullet truss rod adjustment and three bolt neck on 75's. Knowing this, I really don't get why they don't use 70's pickup placement on basses that historically had...

Squier "Perfect Fit Replacement Parts" Mega thread

I think there are some differences, mostly because some factory use the metric system and other use the imperial system. This causes small differences in measurements between instruments, which are often big enough to make them incompatible.

Squier jazz bass (especially 60s)...what was your first upgrade?

I didn't mod anything. It doesn't need any, unless you're after something special. The stock pots work really well, feel sturdy and don't make any scratch noise.

    vintage = good? why ?

Vintage tone is associated with the great artists that played bass in the 60s-70s, that's why many people consider it to be the holy grail of tone. If you don't like it it's fine, to each his own.

    are CV's the new SX?

Johnny : Chinese alder, mim alder, mia alder ? Come on, let's not be ridiculous. I'm sure you would not be able to tell one from the other in a blind test. I'm sure some slabs of alder sound better than others (regardless of their origin), but that inconsistency is due to the fact that it's a...

Squier "Perfect Fit Replacement Parts" Mega thread

What I'm wondering is if one would hear any improvement by changing to supposedly higher quality parts but keeping the same cap value (0.047 IIRC). The stock pots are made by alpha, which are considered good quality (after using them I do think so), and the cap isn't a cheap ceramic one, but I...

CVs and VMs are different, for example the hb7 tuners are drop in on the CVs but not on the VMs. It seems that nobody here tried the pots/jack/cap mod on the CV jazz, I guess I'll have to order the parts and find out myself if it works out ! So you really did notice an improvement in sound ...

Squier vx. SX (give a noob some advice)

With that budget I would go for an SX, an use the money left to do some mods if I feel like they are much needed. Or you can try to find a used Squier Classic Vibe, which are fine basses even without mods.

    "Dead Spot" question...

I see the term come up all the time but I don't know what it is or what causes it. Only thing I noticed on my basses and guitars is that they sound duller in the upper frets, if you compare the E at the 12h fret and the E at the 7th fret, you can hear that difference, but I don't think that is...

Active basses VS active guitars popularity

In the guitar world, active pickups are the exception. AFAIK most of the active guitars users can be found in the metal scene, in other genres I almost never see them. But when it comes to basses, it's different : the active ones are very common and I don't know the exact proportion but they...

    Storing your Bass.

One advice a luthier gave me is that basses and guitars should always be stored vertically. Apparently, storing them horizontally isn't good for the neck. Of course, it should also be stored away from extreme temperatures or direct sunlight exposition. A gig bag or case to avoid dust build...
