that means that your bass's electronics are not grounded!
i would make sure that there is a wire running from the ground solder joint on your tone pot to your bridge. The wire does not need to be soldered to the bridge, a contact/touch is all you need, so you can wedge the wire between the...
dude that is just bad-ass. where do you find an old dynamite crate?
or did you print the words on newer wood?
now i'm gassing for Scrap wood from old crates.... ha!!! i need to call the winemakers that are 40 miles from me... need to see if they have any left over wine barrels with cool...
thanks bill!
i love seeing these types of threads on forums, so i figured i'd contribute back to the knowledge base. thanks to everyone who posts these kinds of threads because i wouldn't even know what to do if it wasn't for helpful people on forums.
george, the grain on yours looks so much like the grain on mine i have a feeling they were cut from the same tree!. clearly these '76 are brothers. except you'rs is blonde with white and mine is walnut with black.
in a movie, yours would probably be the hero and mine would play the bad guy :D
after the good part of a month of clear coating & wetsanding & refinishing, i finally finished this 1976 P-bass. still trying to decide whether or not i want to keep pickup covers and/or bridge covers on there.
definitely happy about the passive electronics. I strung it up with ernie ball...

rehearse your songs at home in a dark bedroom.
in your first gig, time seems to blur by and tunnel vision happens alot if you're nervious.
if you can play your songs in pitch black then you're comfortable with the material. :D
excellent work with this. and i LOVE these threads. I'm going to do this on my own someday. now, just to find a basement or a garage for this project...
do you have any clips or soundbites of you playing this bass?
i've always thought that Shawn Harris (former lead singer of the Matches) was a brilliant mind.
his new band, Maniac, is making some really good original tunes. I love that their songs really don't follow a precedent..
i really enjoyed TuneYards and Three Trapped Tigers as well...
took a little hiatus from this project because i had family in town. but for the past week this has been clear coat..... after clear coat.....after clear coat...
but its looking super nice.
my process: wake up in the morning. apply a layer of clear. go to work. get back from work 10 hours...
it looks cool, but if you saw that item on craigslist for the $225, would you hop on it?
don't let the fact that you found it at goodwill (i.e. finding diamond in the rough) convince you that its actually worth more than it is.
it looks like a cool mojo bass but if it was for sale locally...
you want the bass & headstock to be padded inside the case with lots of crumpled newspaper --- shock absorbing material so that no part of the guitar never actually bangs against anything hard -- even the headstock rest inside the case.
then, once the case is fully packed INSIDE, you want to...
i should add that you then place the bass/guitar in a bass/guitar-sized box where you do similar newspaper & foam packing.

its all about immobility & layers.
first of all you have to let us know your genre.
then, i like flipping thru magazines and using the titles of articles in the magazine.
my favorites are the Economist and Scientific American.
their article titles are GOLD!
i got a 40-day old ampeg micro vr stack (head + cab) for $300 off of a CL deal. the seller had just missed out on his 30-day return policy from guitar center and was gassing for a bigger rig.
wired this up last night, but for some reason i'm not getting any response from the pickups when i touch a ferrous screwdriver to the poles.
am i accidentally sending a hot to ground here?
got my pickup and wired it into the pickguard.

all i'm waiting for now is waiting for clear coats to dry so i can install hardware!
doesnt look like its too bad of a peel - it has some character!
if you want to stop it from spreading to the front/body of the guitar, i would take some clear coat and try to "seal" in the offending finish.

i dont want to seem harsh here, but i'm going to act as the voice of reason for you:
why are you driving 3.5 hours to go check out a questionable bass?
what is it about that particular instrument that is making you go completely bonkers about it?
why buy this item that causes you worry...

skyy skyyport was a great funk album back in the day.
Gerald Lebon on bass
i've also been listening to some newer, funk-revival stuff.

you should record a demo and/or a video of a performance that you take seriously. this should be standard reference for someone who wants to get to know your band but hasn't seen you live yet.
i think its important to be genuinely friends with the guys you jam with.
if you're not motivated enough to hang out with them, imagine how tough practicing together will be (when tempers flare and when money is short)
you don't have to be best friends, but you should get along very well.
i'm rocking mini rigs of doom all over the place.
rocking the ampeg micro VR stack for bass and then rocking a krank micro stack (two 1x12 cabs) for guitar
how much wattage do you need?
i play an ampeg micro vr stack with 200w and its really nice actually. but its a bit small in the "stage presence' category.
but then again so was the b15
hey man i think craigslist is the way to go for you.
you can get a higher-quality used bass for about 150-200.
(squier vintage series, etc...)
you can pickup an old 100w amp for about 75 bucks
yes you will need strap, string, picks.. but those are cheap.
you do not want to buy a...
i'll take a number!
recently bought this 1976 P-bass from Guitar Center.
its currently being refinished but it's going to have the general look. i just wanted to clean it up a little, re-do someone else's shoddy stain job, etc.. it plays beautifully and is addicting to hold and play. i...
