    RIP Sean Malone

Just incredibly sad news. He was such a talent. Don't know when we will see the likes of Cynic's rhythm section again.

    Do you like Metal??

Much thrashier than I expected for a band named Blood of Odin. Nothing Scandinavian about that sound. Much more NWoTM sounding.

    Ibanez vs squire for metal

It does not matter which one you get as long as the particular instrument you get is well made and has no major problems. The best bass is the one that makes you enjoy playing bass.

    The Loudness War Analyzed

Not so much a grain of salt the size of Jupiter, (my fault for introducing the singular in the first place), as many grains of salt spread out over an elliptical orbit with a combined mass approximating Jupiter. For more fun science stuff that might or might not shake one's faith in one's...

    The Loudness War Analyzed

Quick and dirty version of computer vs neural net, (full of generalizations, approximations and likely inaccuracies): Basically, most computers work by having central processing units that process information with yes/no answers. All operations line up in queues to be solved one answer at a...

    Capo on Bass

Some thoughts about using a capo from my blog post about Bass Guitar Scale Length, String Gauge, and Tuning: Before we settle into the topic of scale, however, we need to consider that scale only measures the maximum speaking length of the string. Fretting a string creates a new speaking...

    The Loudness War Analyzed

Both analog and digital media can handle a dynamic range of at least 60 decibels with old fashioned recording studio tape coming in at around 70 db and digital boards at around 90 db of dynamic range. That's a lot of range with which to play. Take a fairly dynamic, high quality, well mixed CD...

    The Loudness War Analyzed

Talking about digital vs analog with respect to the loudness wars misses the source of the problem entirely. Both formats are capable of reproducing sound with much greater dynamic range. The dynamic limit is not inherent in the medium being used to reproduce the sound. It's not even an inherent...

Cheap-o bass decision: old Lotus P vs. Essex (SX) P. What would you do?

No new wood cut down for the Lotus. No fossil fuels expended to ship it to you, and since you have it there you don't have to worry that you will have to send it back, doubling the shipping miles. The wood is already as aged as it will ever be and it is already adjusted to your local...

What drummer blows you away?? (Rock and Fusion)

Morgan Ågren (Mats/Morgan Band, Zappa, Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects). Gary Husband (first heard him on The Un-Merry-Go-Round on Allan Holdsworth's Metal Fatigue). The videos on their respective Drummerworld pages linked above are pretty jaw-dropping.

Gene Simmons says rock isn't just dead, 'it was murdered' by file sharing

Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails did the free music thing as well back in 2008 with The Slip. He's got his and he's not whining about not getting a bunch more, unlike Gene and his poor little rich boy rants about how hard it is to make a few more millions. The way I look at it both U2 and NIN are...

Gene Simmons says rock isn't just dead, 'it was murdered' by file sharing

...except that sales of music -- much of it rock -- were huge in the 1980s and the LP was getting its clock cleaned by the cassette as much as by the CD: LPs are only good for dedicated listening. Most people are not dedicated listeners. Go to any college campus and you will see kids...

Gene Simmons says rock isn't just dead, 'it was murdered' by file sharing

A $10 album in 1985 would cost $22 today if adjusted for inflation. If wages had grown to match the cost of living then we'd all be looking at that price and thinking it wasn't a problem. I worked for minimum wage and I bought on average two albums per pay period. No way that I could do the same...

I listened to Sunn O))), Ulver, Lustmörd, Negură Bunget, Blut aus Nord, etc. a lot while writing my dissertation. ENTOMBED DCLXVI ...BASS TONE...HOLY SH*T

No, it's not an HM-2, but since basslike had asked about using the same pedal as the guitars, I figured that a pedal that was a younger cousin would give an idea of what that might be like. Here's one with the HM-2 for comparison:

    ENTOMBED DCLXVI ...BASS TONE...HOLY SH*T

Entombed's buzzsaw guitar sound came from using a cranked Boss HM-2. Not sure if Sandström used one as well or not, but given that he plays both guitar and bass I'd bet that he has one.

    Where are the metal bands?

I used to hate growls until I started listening to bands with singers that mixed clean and growled vocals (Opeth, Amorphis) and learned to appreciate good growling. I'm glad that I did because now I get to discover amazing new bands like Hamferð: Jón Aldará has an amazing voice.

Signs of Batteries Dying on Active Bass?

I had those volume cut-outs happen with my Yamaha's active pre when the battery was very low. If it sat for 24 hours it would build up enough charge to work for a bit, but then drop off within 10 minutes of plugging in, then cut in and out at random. New battery and the problem went away.

    Full Scale or Short Scale?

So what we will be able to take away from this is the effect of scale length on the harmonic spectrum of a single open string. That's fine, but, every time you fret a note you are altering the effective scale length and when you place a pickup to transduce the vibration of the string at a fixed...

    Where are the metal bands?

People keep writing that no metal bands are playing the sort of music that they used to or singing or writing good songs or melodies or choruses or whatever and I just shake my head. Where are the metal bands?

Looking at all of the latest press on metal blogs I'd say that the new bands are being choked off by all the old bands that are dropping in once every five years to do a tour or release something to keep the brand afloat. The labels are just like the big Hollywood studios, they'd rather spend a...

    New Pickups or New Bass?

If he has Amplitube he might be able to split his signal the way that Doug Pinnick does: sending the highs through a guitar amp and everything else through a bass amp (Doug uses a Traynor YBA-1, but he could run the highs through the Bassman for a similar sound). Probably won't solve the base...

    Full Scale or Short Scale?

I'd venture a guess that any discussion of tone and scale length would also need to figure in the effect of pickup placement, itself a really complex set of variables when you consider that, unless we play only open strings, our impressions of the overall tone comes from hearing multiple...

    Full Scale or Short Scale?

I'm guessing you must mean string feel and the "tautness" of the sound here, because neck stiffness has nothing to do with the amount of tension on a string of a particular length and gauge tuned to a particular pitch. Given the same gauge and pitch, the shorter string has to have less tension...

    Any metalheads here?

I think you are mistaking TalkBass for Finland: The Promised Land of Heavy Metal (tm). ;) Metal was a lot less defined as a genre back in the late 70s. Lots of people talked about Van Halen, AC/DC, Rush, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger as being "metal" and Iron Maiden and Ozzy were what passed for...
