I don't know that it's possible to say that a singer is objectively better than others, though I have to say that Rob Halford's vocal range always impresses me. Hi ability to sing fast, aggressive like Painkiller as well as softer ballads like Before the Dawn is outstanding as well.
This is his...
Anthrax.
They were big in the 80s for a little while, until they fired their Joey Belladonna and grunge replaced metal as MTV's favourite genre.
Lately, I've been seeing more and more new Anthrax cds and records in stores, especially after their relatively new albums Worship Music and For All...
Who says you have to be energetic? Some bass playing frontmen can be super charismatic without a lot of movement. Look at Tom Araya. Doesn't move much besides headbanging, but can still affect the audience with his intimidating, imposing demeanor on stage. In my opinion, that can be just as...
I used to think that covering my bass with stickers would look really cool.
Give it sort of a punk look.
I tried it a couple times, but always ended up taking them off because it just looked really amateur-ish and clashed horribly with the finish on the bass.
Update:
I sold out.
See, until I played with a metal guitarist I thought having more than 0-1 pedals was redundant. However, as soon as the guitarist plugged in, the sound of my bass vanished into thin air. My tone up to that point had been ideal for stripped-down forms of music like punk...
These are just so absurd that you can't help but be amused. "Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables" is a record full of dark sarcasm, resentment, and politics, but on the b-side there's just this song about joyfully stealing mail. Classic.

Hi TalkBass,
Do you have experience building your own instrument?
This may seem quite ambitious, but I am planning to build myself an electric bass (with a bolt-on neck, four strings and passive pickups), or rather the body and circuits of such an instrument. I find myself slightly suspicious of...
I use rotosound roundwounds, and they get that sound quite nicely. Playing with a pick really helps too. If you're playing with a p-bass, turn the tone knob all the way up.
Depends. Bass and drum solos can sound great within a song provided that they are used tastefully. I really don't like bass or drum solos when it's in the middle of a concert to kill time between songs. Especially Gene Simmons's "bass solos" when KISS plays live. Nothing against him as a bass...
It doesn't really matter as long as the instrument feels good to you and sounds good. If it has to have 24 frets, I think all Ibanez basses have 24.
Side note: There's a ton of identical threads like this already that you could have read.
That's fair... I've only ever seen him playing solos. Not a huge fan of the guy myself, but I think I'm just bitter that he briefly replaced Slash in Guns N Roses hahaha.
Yeah, my right hand has huge problems with blood circulation. Even if the air conditioning is just too strong or something like that, my hand will get cold and stiff, which makes finger playing extremely difficult. I've had to wear cut-off gloves or revert to using a pick when that happens...
Hi,
is anyone here a Metallica/ Cliff Burton fan? I was recently watching some live footage of them playing For Whom the Bell Tolls live in the 80s and noticed that Cliff Burton has an unusual strumming technique. I've since tried to duplicate it, but it hasn't worked. Notice how he strikes the...
Right now, I just have a electro harmonix big muff pedal and nothing else. Not the greatest since it's meant for guitar, but a cool thing to experiment with. I got it after listening to Cliff Burton's use of wah and distortion on Metallica's first three albums. If I can save up for a fuzz wah or...
Welcome \m/
I'm also a relatively new bassist (playing since about 6-8 months ago). Here are a few tips I think you might find useful.
- I'm a metalhead also, but I've also tried to learn some funk/slap style songs via tablature and suggest you try the same once you understand the basics. I'd...
Hello,
I started playing bass 6-8 months ago. I've taught myself mainly with books (and the occasional dvd) borrowed from my local public library as well as playing tablature for songs that I like, primarily heavy metal from the 1980s, punk rock, as well as excerpts from classical pieces and...
I don't have a ton of experience, but what I did to find my tone was to turn all the dials on my bass and amp to 12:00 position, playing a scale, and very gradually moving the dials clockwise between each scale until I found something that sounded good.
Also, pick playing gets very maligned...
I began playing about 6 months ago, and bought a Samick brand precision bass for about $50 at the time. I've since become very enthusiastic about playing bass and am saving up for a new one. Would it be a better idea to just upgrade my current one instead? It's not a great bass but I do like how...
