    Short scale bass

I got a Gretsch Jr. Jet, put a Babicz bridge and flatwounds on it. Lots of low end and some sweet octaves.

Is it a heavy wood? The broken short dark rays of grain makes me think of white mahogany.

Gretsch Junior Jet II mini humbuckers - a few questions?

As far as being noisy.....mine is not. I'd be interested in chrome bezels too. I know that these aren't basses but the body shape is very close. I'm digging the red stripe.

Shopping for a Short Scale Bass Guitar

Another vote for the Gretsch G2220. I put some flats on mine and it really thumps.

    Creating a pickguard

For the two that I made, I made paper templates. I'd tape it on and leave it for a while and just keep looking at it and changing the shape until it just looked right. Taped my final template to my material and cut it on the bandsaw. I use small files and custom made sanding blocks to fine fit...

What is the mod that you are really happy with?

Favorites J - Babicz bridge gave it a more clear sustain and a larger tone knob to match the volume knobs to please my OCD. Affinity P - adding Seymour Duncan SPB2s and my handmade feaux carbon fiber pickguard & headstock cover. Gretsch G220 - Babicz bridge, flats, and a handmade dark...

What are you opinions on Rotosound Bass Strings?

They were the strings that came on my jazz bass so I don't know how old they were when I got it. I really like the tone of them. I played it for a year and half and just replaced them. The new 66's have a slight tinny sound to them which I think will go away once they are fully broken in. I...

I just found out my neighbor plays bass

I thought my new neighbor and I wouldn't get along when at 2AM I had to go over to his place and ask the band to stop. I knew that he played bass, but it turned out that he was on deployment and his buddies used his place to play and let it get out of hand. When he returned, he apologized and...

    Rick Beato: Jaco Analysis

Although I appreciate the talent that he had, I just can't get into his style and sound of a lot of the stuff he played. It's just too hard to listen to. He was a big deal, there's no doubt about that and I think of him like I think about most conceptual artists. Their methods are difinitely...

Cheesy Lyrics (and words to stay away from)

Anyone ever hear of They Might Be Giants? I'm kind of impressed by some of the words that they make work in a song, line by line, but overall........hmmmmm. I'm your only friend I'm not your only friend But I'm a little glowing friend But really I'm not actually your friend But I am Blue...

    Your favorite quarantine bass discoveries?

I have discovered the high hat. Maybe it's just stronger in the songs that I have been working on lately but I swear that I can hear it more clearly than before. Maybe I've progressed a bit and am not focusing so much on just hitting the correct note, which frees up my brain to focus on the...

Does anyone actually look at the "Wanted" classifieds?

I do. But when I do, I am looking for something very specific and usually do a search. If I am looking for another bass, I scroll right on by the listings which are above my price point.

What bass strings are you using and why?

On my Jazz - Rotosound 66 because I like the brightness P - LaBella Deep Talkin Flats because I like the smoothness of the tone Short Scale - DAddario Chrome Flats - On the recommendation of other TBrs with the same Gretsch. Plenty of low end and good octave tones.

    Removing logo from new pickup

No. But use some 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper that has been soaked overnight in water. Lightly sand the logo off. Then take a dremel tool with the little white buffing wheel on it, use very light pressure and shine it back up.

    Lithium coin batteries, what's good?

You will notice the weight difference quite a bit more if you pick up a pack of AA Energizers in one hand and the same quantity of AA Cheapos in the other. There is just more material in the top name brand batteries. That's why they last longer. My first choice has always been Energizer, then...

What size allen key do i need to adjust a truss rod on a Fender Squier J Bass?

My Squier P was a 4mm. Now it's more like 4.5683 mm since the previous owner gooched it. Now neither a 4 or 5 mm fit. But the action is where it needs to be after switching to flats so I'm not too worried about it........yet.

Flats are feeling a little "sticky"

I agree with uwrossl about wiping them down with alcohol. I just put some Chrome Flats on and they were somewhat sticky. After wiping them down with denatured alcohol they are smooth as silk.

Wisconsin Bassist Club chapter IV (to the 4th degree)

Well, I spent most of Saturday getting my recording setup to work and was able to add bass to an acoustic guitar song. Wow! Screwing with input levels, stereo settings and latency issues, and then playing clean was daunting. There's got to be an easier way. I'm using my laptop to record the...

Wisconsin Bassist Club chapter IV (to the 4th degree)

Here's my music area. With a 1600 sq ft house, all I get is 12 sq ft...........lol. I just got the Gretsch two weeks ago so I've been playing it quite a bit. New bridge and strings so far but I'm I'm going to make a custom pickguard. I'm also trying to figure out how to record to my computer too.

The OFFICIAL "Gretsch Bass Owners Club"

I just got mine two weeks ago. I didn't like the strings that came with it. I picked up a Babicz bridge from another TBer, put Chrome Flats on it, gave it a good set up and I am really digging it.

    "One Owner" Basses

Used is used, but current condition will determine the price point for me. I've seen one owner instruments owned by teens where condition runs from like new to beat to crap. Likewise for adult ownership.

    Smelly Bass Case

I bought a used car and the previous owner was a heavy cigar smoker. I took a couple small dishes and put plain charcoal briquettes in them and let them sit. A couple of weeks later and the stench was gone. Not nearly as messy as baking soda can be.

    Does cable gauge matter?

No in terms of how it sounds, but yes on durability. I guess it depends on how you plan to use it. I just put new connectors on two cables and on one, the center conductor when twisted was maybe 1/16th of an inch diameter and the other was about 1/8th inch. When testing each, I couldn't tell...

Wisconsin Bassist Club chapter IV (to the 4th degree)

I started out on a jazz bass and it's still my number 1. I came across a P bass that played well and the price was too good to pass up and also being a woodworker, I slightly reshaped it, inlaid some ash to give it a little weight, new pickups, stained and finished the neck, and made a pickguard...
