Unsurprisingly I have received a few emails from people looking to take my chromatron off my hands. As of now, I have no plans to part ways with it even if it leaves the board. If I do decide to let it go, I'd be more prone for a trade than a cash sale.
I actually spent some more time this evening comparing the pair. The chromatron is noticeably better...but only by a small margin. When stacking other effects, it became more obvious how much deeper and how much more control over your sound you have w the chromatron. Those settings I posted before yielded drastically different results when stacked with other effects with the chromatron always coming out on top for me as the better sounding of the two, again...not by much, but in a blind test I'd pick the chromatron every time. The chromatron seemed more centered around the dynamics of my playing whereas the proton seemed to take the initial attack from my playing always, but on sustained notes it almost had a pulsing type of feel to it vs the chromatron that would have a decay based on the sustain. The v2 Proton is definitely based on the Chromatron and can hang with it. I never bonded with the expression/filter control option and I don't take advantage of the send/receive because my setup is based around an ES-8 switcher so the smaller size of the Proton with the same basic envelope magic as the chromatron makes it an almost no brainer for me. I'm going to switch them out and see how it goes. I also have to say, aesthetically I'm way more into the Proton. Really is a handsome pedal.
