Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

you guys are miles ahead of me on this stuff.

i’m not really looking to do groove/pattern stuff at this point (though that could happen too).

what i want out a sampler is something that’s a cross between samplr (ipad app) and the hydrasynth (for its modulation capabilities) and (maybe) the prophet x.
Not really that far ahead. You do freakn dope stuff on those iPad things.

It all depends on the outcome and the creative outlet imo.

Side note: id get samplr but getting wavs in there is too much of a pain in the @ss for me.

Currently working on Empress stuff. Desktop-location Zoia connected to a floor-location expression pedal, and rigged as a midi controller routed to floor-location Echo and Reverb pedals. Now, I can select which floor pedal parameter I want to adjust and move it via Zoia + expression pedal instead of bending down and turning a knob.

I'm building a sound with two Echo engines engaged, and the output going to the Reverb. One of the Echo engines is a granular engine, with the expression pedal controlling the mix. I'm feeling adventurous and considering adding an LFO in Zoia to modulate other parameters in the granular engine.

Also i got this last week as a freebie from a fellow TB member.

The reading head doesn't work

You can't put a nugget up here like this and not provide details as to how you made it.
is this the chase bliss “patch” you were talking about the other day?

It is the Chase Bliss MOOD -- and nothing else, just bass>MOOD>amp -- but it is not the new patch I was talking about the other day, this was just something I did while noodling this morning. This is based on a combination of the Delay mode from the left side with the Stretch mode from the right side.

Exactly why you need a 2nd one

:ninja:

cool. it did sound a bit different, but i thought there was some “angry bee” action to it.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much of that is the MOOD itself and how much is the sounds from the MOOD that I personally gravitate towards. As I use it more and more I find the things I'm changing aren't so much the settings on the pedal as it is how & when in my performances that I'll capture a chunk in the Drolo side. I suspect I'll develop my own vocabulary with MOOD that will be a much smaller subset of what it's capable of...and some of that may already be evident.

Finally have something to post! I wasn't going to post it here originally, but realized there's some non-tonal electronic sound generation going on, especially at the beginning.

Long story behind this track:

Years ago - maybe 10? - I discovered the Octavius Squeezer by Chunk Systems. Found one at a store called Bananas at Large, tried it out in the store but I didn't want to pay that much money. So I found a used one here on TB. When I got it, it seemed pretty old and used, but I wasn't worried about it. But then I had to go menu diving and pull of the classic rookie mistake: when it asks to delete, never press YES unless you are absolutely sure! I managed to erase all the presets. So I went online, found the website, and you could download firmware updates and the presets. But when I tried to load them, it wouldn't load all of them! I contacted the company, talked to the main guy (can't remember his name), and we tried a few things - he even wanted me to mail him the memory card I was using - but never got more than 17 presets loaded. Disappointed but resigned, I put it away. Until someone on the megathread here at TB said they were looking for one. I thought, here's my chance to unload it! Made contact, then realized I needed to check the pedal - I didn't leave a 9V in there did I?! Well, no 9V, still only 17 or so presets, but what's this - the switch to turn it on doesn't work?!! Sometimes it doesn't latch, very strange. So I plugged it in, and OH MY GOD I remembered why I got this thing! I messed with it for a while, then realized I should jam along with the Kraftwerk album I was listening to (minimum-maximum), even dug up my copy of Autobahn and played along with the original 20 minute song. Oh, I also got my MF-104 analog delay moogerfooger out. That was fun!

I realized there was no way I could get rid of this pedal - I didn't feel right asking for money for it, since there are a few things wrong with it, and I realized it was worth more than I could possibly get in its poor condition.

And then I looked - it's serial #000013! I guess I'm cursed with it, but I don't mind, it lets me make funny squelchy sounds all day! I did this track the other night - came up with a drum beat in an app called EasyBeats that I downloaded the other day, and started playing. The very beginning of the track, I'm not even plugged in - I accidentally touched the plug and it was triggering the Octavius! So I'm just doing that at the beginning, until I actually start playing notes. Even the noise when I was plugging it in to the bass is in there being filtered. It's the initial preset (00 - Gobstopper), and then at the end I switch to (01 - Double Chin). It's also been kind of a rebirth of my Ibanez SR506 - I love the bass but not the electronics, so it has also sat around. It's an earlier one, MIK, wenge in the neck. The Bartolinis just aren't my sound, but it makes a great trigger for the Octavius!

well that’s kind of it, right? find how it works for you and then fit it in. i tend to look at all this stuff as building blocks in a larger whole. the sounds by themselves are often not interesting. imo, etc.

this is a complete nonsequitor, but do any of you know gerhard richter’s work?

i ask because i think his process has interesting parallels to do electronic music in the recorded realm. (i’m also fond of his work.)

anway, there was a film called “gerhard richter painting” that used to be on one of the streaming services (might still be). the trailer is here:

idle musings on a sunday afternoon.

Awesome share.

I was aware of some of his paintings, but know very very little about him.
I know more about Sviatoslav Richter though....hehe....
