Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Yeah, check it out...Dwarfcraft Devices - Handbuilt Effects from Eau Claire, WI

I had long been thinking about Happiness, Ghost Fax, and a few others they make like their pitch shifters, but at the end of the day there is SO much good stuff out there these day and you really can’t/shouldn’t try to catch em all. Even w endless funds you’d never get deep enough w em all to make it worth it.

speaking of bottomless pits of functionality, a Blooper passed by on eBay at the lowest price I had ever seen so I snagged it...forgot about sales tax :( but still a solid deal. So I guess next week...off we go into Chas Bliss.....I had really been wanting a Mood or a Hydrasynth, funny how things play out in reality?

watched that earlier today. I’m enjoying the SonicState virtual Superbooth thing a whole lot. I don’t know for sure how well I’d get on with the tracker paradigm, but I think there’s a lot to like about this thing. Sample slicing looks pretty nice and being able to look at per step editing like this is really appealing

I definitely would like to try that for a few weeks.
IMO once you grasp the “flow” of the machine, it must be a freakin powerful sampler with a crazy good sequencer.

I wonder how it would perform making tracks without a computer.
Also wondering if it can sample while playing some tracks??? That would be an awesome feature.....like playing along to something getting sampled or vice versa.

I think it’s got limited live performance functions. Loopop mentioned something hinting at that in his demo. You can sound design when building but not when rolling with some effects.

I can’t remember though it seems best suited to pre loading samples and working from there. The Octatrack rules for sampling and mangling with the sequencer always running.
One thing I love about the Tracker is once you’re done making a tune, you save every stem separately to the SD card, pop it into the computer, with clean individual tracks for mixing. Some of the demos sound really nice

I think I'm resigning to the idea "there is no perfect sampler" idea.

User makes it or breaks it.

What would make the "perfect" sampler in your book? Genuinely curious. I have a PO-33 and a Digitakt, and neither feel perfect (not for me at least), but both are definitely useable and interesting in their own very different ways
I think if a sp404sx and an mpc2000xl had an illegitimate child.....we would be pretty darn close. For me.....

But i haven't used many of the samplers available like the digitakt and such....so i cant give an opinion on those.

Edit....maybe some sort of a lite/simple ableton in a box would be something very interesting.

Yeah, I'm just saying that my experience is pretty limited. What would you like to combine from the sp404sx and mpc2000xl?

Ok....how about we go about it this way, I’ll enumerate what I like about each one....here we go......:

SP404sx:
- simplicity of sampling. (Plug, press rec.....assign pad....done)
- Instrument and mic input. Plug bass\guitar\ mic (with 1\4 inch adapter) rec....done.
-Easy to asign sample to pads. (And move them around using copy\past and exanchage modes)
-Lots of memory. (SD cards)
-Can save up to 12 « sets » with easy recall. (Example you can load all pads with samples and save to a program 1, then repeat up to 12 times......as long as there is memeory left, about 50 hours on max memory SD cards.)
-FX are awesome. (MPC ones all suck except maybe EQ and Filter....)
- size is a big plus (mpc 2000xl is huge, lots of wasted space due to crappy internal drive)
- No need to buy a 3rd party OS.
- Easy import of waves to SD card via Roland program. Drag and drop, then put SD card back in the sampler. DONE!!!!
( AKAI OS sux, so every user buys the JJ.OS.....that’s an extra 100$ or so. Big minus for the MPC) The MPC 2000xl OS is fine though and can’t be changed to 3rd party JJ.OS.

MPC2000xl:
- 16 levels option
- More output options, 8 audio mix outs.(SP only has a L-R out and headphone out)
- visual chopping of samples wave forms. (Easy to see where to chop to prevent clicks and noises, SP404sx you have to do it by ear.....)
- Auto chop of long samples. ( not a huge fan of this, but it can help save time and create new ideas)
- Pitch shift and Time stretch sound a little more “natural” (matter of taste, the SP can do it but adds artifacts and warbles....that can sound awesome. Imperfections are sometimes desired IME, IMO.)
- pads are much more confortable (SP are fine and are far from being problematic. The are more durable and reliable than the MPC ones. Look how many replacement kits are available for the MPC line......always a pad that stops triggering....then a 2nd....until you replace the triggers under the pads.....puke ta cu lar, especially the blue MPC1000 ones, the pads SUCK!!!!!!!!!! Don’t ever buy one without the pad upgrade)
- easier song mode with grid view. (No as good as a daw but better than linear recording of the SP)
- 64 voice polyphony (compared to 12 in song mode and 6 in reasmple for the SP)
- Visual meter for input of samples (SP has a small red clipping light only)

Not going into the midi capabilities, that a whole other story. You can basically sequence an entire studio set up with an MPC, the SP only has midi in ....so it’s totally crap IMO and I really like the SP as a sampler)

I guess I’d like to have the combo but the MPC prices have went up to crazy prices. So, for the time being I’ll practice on the SP.

There it is. Really, the best sampler is a good DAW. That said, I’ve stumbled on to things with a Digitakt or Octatrack I never would’ve found in a DAW. Or at least things I wouldn’t take the time and trouble to do in a DAW. For me, the best sampler (or anything else) is one where I feel musical. Creating a living thing as opposed to programming what amounts to parlor tricks to me

This.
Exactly why I use the sampler instead of a DAW. ( we all have to use a DAW anyways , but I digress)
Sampling with a DAW is the most boring thing ever. I like have a CD\record player\ iPad plugged in and just press record. Instead of converting waves to import to a DAW......IMO, IME
