Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I have only been playing with small combos for the past few years - I've got a GK MB 112 II - it's only 200 watts with a 12" speaker but it's pretty loud! The best part is that it's only 25 pounds!

I did one rehearsal/jam session recently, two drummers, loud lead guitarist - it held its own but I kind of want a little more power. I've been tempted by the newer GK combos, the Legacy & the Fusion - those are rated at 800 watts! But only with an extension speaker, it's less by itself (kind of misleading). So I've been thinking about getting one of the MBP powered extension cabs for my MB 112 II, but the single 12" one is out of production.

I've also got an older PJB Suitcase with 4 5" speakers - never totally satisfied with it, plus it weighs like 40 pounds - I'm a wimp! But thinking of stacking that on top of the GK, running my Alembic in stereo with each pickup out to the separate cabs, I tried it once and it sounded great but it's kind of a hassle.

I developed back problems in the 90s hauling big Peavey rigs around. I have tried other things but “my” sound is an Orange TB500, and my main cab is a Barefaced 12”. I have an old Flite 15” + 5” cab from the 1990s that I replaced the speakers on and now sounds quite good. The two speakers together with that head are crushingly loud. I only need the 2nd cab for some extra lows when playing outdoors.

sorry for the horrible audio / mix / inaudible explanation, I didn't check any levels, and just hit record and was too lazy to redo it, but if you listen, you get an idea of what you can do w just 2 loopers and a flip flop and you can hear things grow and get trimmed and then overdubbed for feedback and other nonsense.

i'm probably in the minority here in that i've been using single-speaker cabs (mostly 1x12s, but a couple of 1x15s at times) since about 1995 (?), even gigs at big halls cause they normally had sound reinforcement . . . unless they were backline gigs, which brings me to the svt: for about 5 years in a row, i played in an oldies thing that did the caesars' palace high rollers new year's eve party. backed little anthony (from the imperials), that sort of thing. first year i walk into the rehearsal. svt on its side. seems like overkill, but what the hell. maple-neck bass with flats, should be fun. omfg it sounded sweet, even at a low level (i had never been an svt fan—preferring the v4-b). anyway, i was happy. next year, the same rig, still fun. next year, i'm, "yes svt!" . . . i walk in, gk into a hartke 4x10. ugh.
