Just finished practice with the new cab. Still need some time behind it to really know the settings to use from amp and bass, but I have to say I have never had such a full and CONTROLLED low end before. My LMIII seems to like it as well, especially with the 4ohm. Band all said they really could feel it without being boomy at all and still had clarity in upper registers Time will tell but so far two thumbs up! I ran tweet from about 10 -25%. Need to work on where to keep it set.

The tweet for me is going to take some time to get used to, since I was not able to really stand away from the cab. I like to get about 15 feet away if I could, but last night I was right on it. I am finding with my LMIII and this cab, although can be very warm and deep, it is also really tight (compared to my equipment history, I am sure there are tighter systems). Which is good for most of our music, but when a nice blues song comes up I just really look for that pillowy sound - but alas that would be a different rig. Maybe I will get a VT pedal and be done with it.

To get that pillowy old vintage bass sound, you want a boost at 150hz or so. The Markbass head can kind of get that with some convoluted mucking:

1- Turn the bass down! That's right. Turn it down 2 clicks at least.

2- Turn the contour (VPF) up until it sounds closer to right.

3- Start turning the VLE up until the top end sounds right

If none of that works, then either get an EQ pedal and boost at 150hz, or change from the little mark to an F500. The F500's variable low mid can be used to boost the upper bass frequencies required to get a pillowy tone.

Note: A 3015LF without the ability to boost in the 150-250hz range will have a hard time copping old school boomy bass tones IMHO. You would do better with a Boss GEB7 than you would with a VT bass. Or, switching to an F500.

Thanks for the tips! Luckily we don't play many tunes requiring that tone and the rig performs nicely with everything else. I will give your settings a try.

I think these'll be out of my 2011/12 budget, running a nonprofit label and all. Maybe 2013 used....(I like the budget 4x10 I just scored, but I'm always looking to improve tone ya know?)

Another possibility is just an Eminence 3012LF. Anyone run one of these w/o a mid or tweeter? Can a graphic eq make one not really miss a mid-driver? I asked Dave at Avatar if he'd offer an option for the SB112 cab like that (3012LF instead of stock driver, c/o, & tweet) for the same price of $350 shipped (black carpet) and I got a friendly maybe..... (EDIT: hmm, maybe 3012HO instead for full-range....)
