Barefaced Bass 'BIG TWIN' ... lets talk about it...

I'd suggest that most differences people attribute to different power amp topologies are in reality gain staging failures.

Those old Crest CA-series amps? You could set the input voltage down to .775v or so, making them feel really loud while not really changing the absolute volume they were capable of with a proper input signal.

Guys playing without PA support need these uber cabs to take care of their own low end. For that they are fantastic. But when you put them on stage with a house sub system their lows muddy up the FOH mix.

For the sort of money you're into for a pair of FF or Barefaced cabs you could build your own 4 cab BFM PA or use it as a Bass Rig of Ultimate Doom for 400 people with no PA support.

+ a big 1.............and the horn loaded PA would still outrun whatever these guys come up with............on far less power.
 
To the OP:

I guess it is hard to find someone who has played both Barefaced and fEARful! I'm amazed at how quickly this conversation got sidetracked...

What I do know is that they use many of the same principles in cab design and both designers are quite competent in what they do. As you can see from my signature, I build fEARfuls, but I also have a lot of respect for what Barefaced does as well. This type of design--3 way cab with high quality LF drivers, power midrange and well-designed xovers will really open up a new level for you. I know someone who plays very similar style of music to that what you play and know that he is quite happy moving over to this type of design.

One of the biggest differences? One is made in the US and the other UK.
 
I’m not sure what difference that really makes other than maybe making the IRS happy - assuming taxes are paid.

If I happen to have a problem with my Cab I can bring it to a local authorized builder for help if I cant straighten it out myself. No shipping time, just the cost to bring it there myself. Yes I am fortunate to live very close to one, but it defiantly weighed on my decision.

Thats not to say that there is anything lacking in CS at barefaced, but there is an ocean between them and me.

Yes they are, and greater internal volume for a given design I believe.

The slightly staggered woofers vs vertical woofers makes NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL. I do believe the superior cooling of the tall port up the side rather than the wide port of the bottom is worth having in a cab that may get pushed very hard, and also we've found this approach makes the cab stronger and stiffer for a given weight and stops unwanted transmission line effects that occur in tall cabs with the port at the bottom or top.

I was just confirming that fEARfuls seem to have more of a presence here, that's all. I'm not sure I understand the IRS comment. The US will collect duties on imported goods as well.

NB: about the tuning. fEARfuls can be tuned lower by shelf extension or partial port blocking.

Not that I consider that an advantage. If it's actually true since both would be at best only increments away anyway but within the same range... for any given set of goals such trifling amounts don't matter a whole lot anyway - once you have reached various thresholds.

But short of sharing exact figures who's to know? Duke and I talk a lot and share details at a deep level, and we can't even agree with ourselves!... that there is one ultimate way to boil our own choices down to the best possible internal space within a few cubic inches for a given performance goal. So then matters of practicality take precedence.

But being in the right range in the first place makes ALL the difference!

We'd probably have to state that a number of different ways several more times yet to make that point actually seep in ; } ...Which is why reading what you or I have to say about the subject is nowhere as valuable - for people who are truly interested in this and related subjects - to do deep and continued study on their own. That's so less silly than reading what this or that person has to say on a forum and accepting it as an absolute in black and white terms, and then going around parroting it in an often mangled form, with no real comprehension.

In fact, the more one knows about this stuff, the more they come to realize that they know less because the universe just keeps getting bigger. It's worthwhile and it's humbling. And eventually that's where individual design philosophies come into play, and we begin prioritizing on the things we think most important, and avoiding approaches we tend to think have less value to us personally.

It's good to have people you can explore it with, but it gets dicey once it's in a marketplace and you have agendas all around you. Fortunately, even though guys like Duke have commerical interests, we find that we can talk theory and design and acoustics without feeling we will get cloned or that what we say to each other will be used on forums as an attempt to trip each other up later on. Keeps it fun, and another deep person's insight is always fascinating.

As regards the thermal bit, I'm not sure if it's of much significance even then, from my own hard-driving experiences and given the most comprehensive study I've read on it so far. Short of actually doing a lot of rigorous tests that go beyond even those, I'm willing to accept the possibility and even the likelihood, but in practical terms the drivers we are using are so good there just seems to be no issue even when pushing these babies all night long with big power.

But the interesting conclusion in the study I mentioned: it was that pretty much any decently-ported cab has a tremendous advantage over any sealed cab as concerns thermal shedding, which reduces driver compression and possible overheating. Even after a couple of hours the sealed cabs have not dissipated much heat. I never really thought about that until I read about it.

As for the bracing style utility that comes with the vertical shelf port approach, I discovered it on the last of my fEARful designs, several years back - the 12/6cube. I didn't find it worthwhile to do further revisions on all the earlier fEARful models that went before it though, given the small weight-shaving it would allow, and the height reduction it often implies.

But upcoming greenboy designs dual-woofer designs are using it a fair amount, as well as some other porting schemes when I think they fit the design goals better.

As for the T-line thing, I haven't seen it to be a problem thus far - in fact it may even be a voicing preference for the 1515/66 and the little ipact it has on the 1212/6 seems to be balance out by other things that are going on in crossover design and in baffle layout. Though I have been aware of the 1/4 waveform principle for some time, so far it hasn't bitten me ; }

And for how low something is tuned? Again, tuning lower than the standard fEARful tunings is sometimes an advantage, and sometimes it's a disadvantage. I outline all that to builders and to DIYers, sometimes bump discussions of it back up to the top on my forum so that understanding what it really means will grow. I have always made it clear to builders and DIYers that extending shelves are a viable option and that customers of the authorized fEARful builders can get lower tunings if they desire.

You can probably look all the way back to the first fEARful megathreads and see it discussed as something that fits some uses (but not so well for others), complete with some illustrative graphs of what it actually means. Why do I mention that? Because so many people think that a lower tuning always means more apparent low end for their bass guitars, when in fact it often means just the opposite. Thus it's good to have options and understanding.

Thank you Alex, I really wish BFM would chime in on this but I don’t blame him for staying out of a Barefaced/fEARful thread. Alex, I’m not exactly clear on what you mean by “slightly” staggered, where do you draw the line (degrees) - and IE, is the FF 1212/66 over the line or within the slightly range?


EDIT: I finished reading your post greenboy and it’s very nice of you to help us that don’t know as much as you gentlemen - personally, I’ve been reading tons and trying to learn as much as I can and the debates between you gentlemen really helps. So if you’d be so kind as to address the above "slightly" question also it would be gratefully appreciated.

EDIT, EDIT, btw, it would be easier if all the authors agreed but since you designers don’t always agree it’s good to read all the views and the open debates/talks here on TB really help. :)
 
The amount you can stagger woofers whilst maintaining good horizontal dispersion depends on the total width of the array (i.e. the width of one woofer plus the offset of the other woofer) vs the lowpass filter point of the woofer array. In the case of our Super Twelve and Super Fifteen where the woofers run to ~4kHz having them absolutely vertical is the best possible solution, any lateral offset having a negative effect. If your woofers were only running up to 150Hz as in a PA sub then you could place them side by side without detrimental effects, even with two 18"s. The fEarful cabs fit that pattern correctly but I can't think of any other bass cabs that do, most have more offset than is ideal considering their woofers' treble extension.

I considered having the woofers in the Big Twin staggered but as they fitted vertically with the port up the side (and as explained previously that port position had a load of other benefits) then that avoided another challenge in terms of marketing / engineering explanations, as this thread has proven!

Thanks very much for getting us the facts guys, I for one, really appreciate it.

Here's where I'm at with this. First off, to the BFM guys.... I have considered this, as well as many other options not discussed here, and I have decided to go this route, but thanks for your input. I have come to the conclusion that one of these new designs from Alex or Greenboy will suit me just fine. In all honesty... Id like to end up with a well-made 1515/66T, however it's just out of the realm of financial possibility for me right now. Same goes for two Big Twins. So we're left with a single Big Twin or FF 1212/6T. I am really up in the air about these two. There are Pros and Cons to each and, for me, they have nothing to do with very minor differences like strictly vertical or staggered drivers, slightly better cooling etc. I decided years ago after nearly driving myself nuts paying too much attention to specs and science, that I would always and only let my ears be the judge and, if that were not possible, let the ears of those few people who's opinions and experience I trust stand in their place.

The Big Twin is more expensive. Many of the FF's I've seen have (IMHO) poor fit & finish such as shabby grille fixtures, uneven lines and general 'homebrew' look to them. The Big Twin has a guaranteed return policy. The FF return policies depend on the builders.

Regardless of which I decide on, I will need to sell some gear AND save some money before I move. Lets keep this thread moving and stay on topic, would love to hear more from people with experience with both cabs.
