bassists who don't like jaco

And be careful with the Milkowski book. Take it with a grain of salt. It was not authorized or endorsed by the Pastorius family. In fact, they say they have some real problems with how Jaco and certain situations were portrayed.

More accurately, they have actually gone to great lengths to call Milkowski on his inaccuracies (read: complete falsehoods and misrepresentations) via the web. I recall a topic here that had a link to a number of corrections to the Milkowski biography on Jaco.

EDIT: Also, Pat Metheny (known longtime friend to Jaco) referred to the biography as "horribly botched." Yet another negative endorsement thrown into the mix.

Wow, slybass's post reads as if my spam inbox had been given a life of its own and found its way to the forums in case he/she isn't being sarcastic. Take a chill pill, it's good for you that you're PRO BASS PLAYER and I'm sure many studio cats owe Jaco a lot because his playing has sort of become a staple, but you really ought to wrap your head around the fact that there are people who don't like the things you like.

That's enough!!!!

Where is the Moderator on this thread?
Any serious bass forums would not alloy this kind of crap!!!!!

Seriously, the poor people who are talking against Jaco are not PRO BASS PLAYER. I'm a Pro bass player. I make 100G a year for the past 25 years playing bass and teaching it and everyday I play something that comes from him even when I play a rock tune. You make me sick.
Good Bye!!

SB

You make 100G a year playing and teaching bass, yet you don't contribue to this forum by sparing a mere $20 or so to become a supporting member? :eyebrow: I guess you aren't all that "PRO" :smug:

So what you're saying is, you can't be a "PRO BASS PLAYER" unless you like Jaco? Or, a bass forum can't be "serious" unless they defend Jaco's legacy by not allowing people to voice their negative opinions about him? :eyebrow:

I know a couple of professional bass players who can't stand Jaco. I guess they can't be "PRO BASS PLAYERS" then. And I definately don't want to aspire to be one. Some of us don't like his music, or is technique, or his style, or his tone. Get over it. Go ahead spending your 100G a year trying to achieve his tone & style. It won't hurt nor help us one bit. I don't like him. I probably will never like him.

I want to say first and foremost that I am a complete idiot and have no misunderstandings about this. I re~~~y enjoyed (and occasion~~~y still do) jaco when I first started playing, and rush, and joe satriani..etc...and ~~~ those "notes"...and I still try my best to learn from and respect ~~~ musicians from ~~~ different perspectives, but GOD DAMN YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME WANT TO HATE JACO AND GO AND TAKE A LEAK ON THE FIRST FRETLESS JAZZ BASS EVER MADE!!!
take care,
-eric
NOW LETS GO GET A MODERATOR AND HAVE THEM TELL US WHAT TO THINK!
HEMMINGWAY STILL SUCKS!!!
I feel dumber now for doing this and have no one to blame but myself.

I don't know if I've ever heard such a thing leveled at another member on this board. You might want to go back to the rhetorical drawing board and uncover different means of diminution, or perhaps refrain from posting personal attacks in general.

Also, Jaco is a bass god, to not recognize him is certainly sinful.

Trying to avoid a hint of personal attack....I feel that this thread is about opinions and discussion. Slybass throws around his "I am Pro Bass Player" and "I make 100G's" a year like it increase the value of his opinions, when really it makes them no more or less valuable than someone of more modest stature.

With that said, Jaco was a great bass player and he was extremely influential to the growth of the bass, but that doesn't mean people have to like him.

I agree that jaco is talented, and i am a fan of his use of harmonics. BUT:

Ask the average person on the street to name you one song that jaco played on. Chances are hardly anyone knows of him or his music outside of the bass world. :hmm:

Ask someone if they have heard of motown, and to name you one motown song/group they like. Almost everyone will mension the temptations, marvin gaye, the supremes, etc; etc James Jamerson has had the single most influential impact on music (let alone electric bass); and most people don't even know who he is!

Jaco is highly over-rated on these forums, and for TB'ers to CONTINUALLY come out and flame each other and personally attack each other over differences in opinions is purile, disgusting, and shameful.
America claims to be the home of the free; yet many of you can't even let your own fellow citizens express their opinions! :scowl:

Shame on you! :scowl: :scowl:

p.s. Jaco isn't god, don't even compare him to Jesus.

sure jaco is talented, but i really cant stand his attitude! yes maybe he is the pioneer, but i just hate him so much when he claims "I'm the greatest bass player in the world!". and the truth is, there are many bassist that can kick his ass, and i think he is doing some stupid attraction more than playing bass while on stage. :eyebrow:

and the fact bout him that, before his death his claim was ""I'm the greatest bass player in the world!". :D

All these discusions are stupid! Jaco was great, it's fact... But opinions on his music can be very different (yeah, they MUST be different)... It's stupid to argue about this silly thing. Everybody can have his opinion and NOBODY can blame you for being stupid if you have DIFFERENT opinion.... Yeah, I love Jaco, I love his music and , yeah, I love his as person.... (just read my signature) and NOBODY, I repeat NOBODY can change this opinion... yeah... Take It Easy....

One other thing:

It completely astounds me that he would use an amp with an 18" speaker, with a preamp that was already known for being extremely midrangey, then boost the mids completely, while dialing out the lows completely, again using an 18" speaker. Does that not boggle anybody else's mind?

Nope. Makes perfect sense to me. :D

I don't think he's ever taken a walk on water....but who knows? He was the best bass player ever. At the time. So he claimed. That's what these guys can't get through their thick skulls. He INFLUENCED a lot of players, and it's now to the point where there are players miles ahead of him. I guess some people just can't take a little sarcasm, because they don't have the syrup handy. :D I do agree that he's overrated. I do agree that most people on these forums regard him as one of a kind. And he WAS. If you have trouble comprehending this, please feel free to ask me any questions. Please note that most everything said about Jaco is referred to in the Past tense, simply because he's dead. And gone. His legacy is unraveling, as it should be. He's not making anymore music, so he's not the best player that there ever was now is he? The sun always comes up tomorrow, and with it a whole new generation of bassists that could be the next "greatest player ever." And then the sun will come up the next day, and the next...

Some people need to get over themselves and their abilities, there's simply WAY too many ego's flying around these forums as of late. Again, if you have trouble taking any sarcasm, maybe this isn't the place for you. Or you need to take a break from the forums.

Everyone just please lighten up. I'm sick of reading how "I'm a pro bass player and Jaco is the best" yadayadayada. Well that's greeaaaat.*Insert Bill Lumberg Voice here* If you could just go ahead and lighten up....and realize that each person has their own opinion and doesn't have to have the same view as you....that'd be swell ok? Thanks a bunch.

Oog :D

EDIT: Oh and by the way, Hemmingway was a drunkard. :hiding:

I first heard Jaco on his Bass workshop video - I was not impressed. 10 years later I am a premier collector of anything Jaco. I have him playing rock (with Hendrix, etc), ballads, Classical, Funk, Jazz, Pop, Punk, Latin, Reggae, Oriental. And he sounds equally comfortable in all genres.

Musically speaking, to be considered great on any instrument, you must master at least these areas:

1. Technique - You must be physically capable to execute simple and complex ideas on the fly
2. Feel - soul/timing/syncopation/groove ..must always support/feel the song
3. Ideas/Composing - you must sound fresh and able to stretch traditional ideas/licks/motifs (creativity) - sounding original, but appropriate and mature
4. Theory/Collaboration - you must be proficient at communicating in the musical language

THIS IS WHERE JACO IS HEADS AND SHOULDERS ABOVE MOST!! THIS GUY WAS NOT ANYWHERE CLOSE TO WHAT WE NORMALLY CALL 'ADVANCE'. HE WAS A GENIUS!

THE ONLY WAY TO JUDGE A MUSICIAN IS ON A COLLECTION OF PERFORMANCES - ONE/TWO SONGS JUST CAN'T DO JUSTICE. YOU NAME ANY GOOD PLAYER OUT THERE AND CHANCES ARE I GOT THEY MUSIC. TRY THAT APPROACH AND ALL YOUR QUESTIONS REGARDING JACO WILL BE ANSWERED.

NOW WE HAVE WOOTEN! YOU CAN ARGUE, BUT ALSO COLLECT. His CD's and Bass Extremes is only the tip of the Iceberg. Again - Collect!

Man I can't believe all this disrespect for a Jazz/Fusion Bass pioneer as Joco was. If you like him fine, if you don't fine.

Man this is just BS and you should be ashamed of yourselves for acting like asses!!!! I have never been so ashamed to be a member at talkbass as I am now. :scowl: Not for talking about Jaco, but the way it has been talked about.

+1000!!!

You can't judge artist by hearing a few of his songs. yeah. I don't like Wooten much on his solo records... But he's incredible bassist everywhere he plays... I heard him playing in superstar trios (4example Scott Henderson, Steve Smith, Wooten) and I also heard him playing with realy interesting experimental groups (Hargroove, Brecker...) and he sounds awesome... Show of Hands, Classical Thump, etc... are crap,
I really don't like it.... Yeah, and I don't say I don't like him...
It's same with every artist, you cannot say The Who were pop just because you heard two songs from Tommy album...

PEACE

In fact, I think that Jaco and Stanley Clarke were the ones who propelled the bass guitar to new and important levels. If they didn't exist, the bass guitar would be very under-developed compared with what it is right now.
