Bassists you just can't watch

OTOH, I can't stand watching--or, more importantly, listening to--Steve Swallow. I respect the guy's musicianship, but his gutless, limp-wristed tone bores me to distraction, and that feeble right-hand technique reminds me of an inept guitarist. Using a pick over the end of the fingerboard? What the hell is that? Willis sounds like a steamroller compared to this guy.

oh yeah I forgot about him, he's horrendous to look at when he's playing. He's great, but god I'm sure he plays in front of a mirror at home

I can't stand watching or listening to bassists that mindlessly slap down on the backbeats. Not only are they often way out of sync with the drummer's backbeat but they also look (and sound) like douches.

I don't mind Steve Swallow all that much. He scrunches up his face but I dig his tone. If you don't think he has any muscle to his sound check out "Let's Eat" from Real Book on good speakers.

Jeff Berlin - totally agree with what's been said. Amazing player but he's got issues.

Pete Wentz - where to start? Not only do I hate them because my little sister likes them but they are absolute talentless tools. Hope they're soon forgotten along with all the other posers currently in the market window.

Trujillo - yep. Gorilla is about right! LOL I used to really like his playing when he was with Suicidal Tendencies but jeezus. Worst tone ever. I don't remember him sounding that bad back then! Hard to believe it's the same person. One of my favorite vids of him is when he has rig trouble on a Metallica gig. Best couple of minutes I've had listening to recent Metallica.......silence.......:D

Gary Willis - can do no wrong!

Along with his stage antics, I can't really stand his long nails and his pseudo-rasgueado on the bass.

As far as making faces go, only posers do it on purpose.

Words can't describe how horrendous that is/was.

It's something better left to an interpritive dance.........just can't find one of someone dancing while digging out their ear canals with a steak knife.


Just goes to show how much studio players make to "ghost play" on records.
Bob Glaub slipped and talked about it in an interview (even though I don't think he "slipped")

Michael Anthony during one of his patented "bass solos". The whole scampering across the stage with the flanger/reverb on "11" and then summoning his tech for a replacement bass is so nauseating that it's almost funny....but it's not. It's mind-numbing to watch and not the least bit entertaining. Unfortunately, this little episode happens night after night.



Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger.
