Bassists you just can't watch

I looked him up after reading this...
Why does he play upside down like that?

That's pretty interesting. I've seen a few musicians play in this manner. The main guy I know from memory is Rand Burkey from the band Atheist.

+1 on Verdine White. That guy must be on speed or something.

I watched a live DVD of the Doobie Brothers the other day. Can't remember their bassplayers name, but he had on a pair of these gnarly 80's bodybuildingpants (it was a recent show) and who knows what else. I cannot fathom how they allowed him to get on stage dressed like that!

Cheers Rody

I must say this. I can't stand Gary Willis and his too light touch. His sound uff awful to me. Ok his technique is superb but he lost that punch.

"Too light touch." No punch? That's funny! I've seen Tribal Tech live several times, and Willis' tightly-controlled, articulate fretless bass playing cranks out more slam and balls than a room full of Fleas.

OTOH, I can't stand watching--or, more importantly, listening to--Steve Swallow. I respect the guy's musicianship, but his gutless, limp-wristed tone bores me to distraction, and that feeble right-hand technique reminds me of an inept guitarist. Using a pick over the end of the fingerboard? What the hell is that? Willis sounds like a steamroller compared to this guy.

pretty much any bassist that stands still, or sits down for no reason...like, if it's someone older i can understand, but someone younger playing upbeat, especially upbeat jazzy type stuff...just peeves me...oh yea, and when a bassist spends an entire set standing in a spread leg stance directly infront of his amp staring into space like Cliff Williams? i believe that was the dudes name from AC/DC, but yea, only he can pull off that stance in my eyes and still be effective

if you cant feel the groove, pick up a guitar :scowl:

I can't stand watching Pete Wentz (a lame emo band I won't name here) play!! It aggravates me to no end. Not only does he "play" a bass like it's a guitar, he can't play live to save his life!!!! Aggggghhhhhh!!!!

Watch if you dare...

I must say, it looks rather cathartic to hammer the snot out of a bass and have a bunch of people scream at you and call it rock and roll.

Probably the worst (or is it the best?) ratio in terms of excellence in bass playing over look is surely Will Lee. I thought his goofy moves and looks were only for the Letterman show. But I was really disapointed when I saw him in an Oz Noy video making the same moves... Gee he probably rehearses that stuff... But what a great musician!
