I think that's because for something to reach that kind of critical mass, nowadays, it's just a lot harder, too much competition. I know Rage Against the Machine is back, it'd be nice to have a young and upcoming band that has the same impact. Godless knows we need one, right now.

Man I think about this a lot. Music seems to be disposable nowadays. Not as special as it was even 20 years ago. Technological/culture shifts/etc.

The ‘good’ I hear ... and there are some bright spots ... are derivative.

I listen widely. You implied I didn’t, or that’s how it came off. Definitely checking that out. Part of my problem: the lack of gatekeepers/tastemakers that hip me to new stuff.

also, I didn’t say that his new approach of ‘atmosphere/vibe/mood’ over harmonic innovation and skill is a BAD thing. Just a paradigm shift to ME.

There was plenty of disposable music to go around from every period. We just keep listening to the best from each one and assuming it was all that good. Music, as an art form, can never stay in one place. It has to keep evolving.
