Boom Bass Cabinets

You asked....

"Dave, just wanted to shoot you this note for clarity. I'm Sammie Glass and I invested years as well as much money developing my Lil'G cabinet. The cabinets by Boom Bass Cab, was the result of theft of my designs by Brad Johnson and Drue Williams while I was in a coma resulting from cancer, fighting for my life. A simple search of Talkbass will verify this truth. It will also reveal the same deceitful Brad Johnson saying the same things about my cab, as well the same Drue Williams saying it was the best cab he ever played. These guys are thieves and their testimonies are on Talkbass. If you buy a Cadillac, change the wheels and color, it doesn't stop being a Cadillac.

Rev"

Yes, I did ask. And so did bassplayer2014 earlier in the week. And you posted about it publicly to begin with. So be it.
:D

I'd also be interested to know who else he sent this to?

This is one of the stranger situations I've been involved in, where a friend bugs out for no apparent reason. Pastor Sammie Glass has been saying this stuff, starting on Facebook, since August 2014. Since then he's also reached out to whomever he thought would believe this, including people he had serious issues with. The premise is that Drue and I, acting together, built cabinets and sold them through Washington Music Center, COMPLETELY WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION. I capitalized that not because I'm yelling, merely to highlight it... because it's important.

I haven't addressed this publicly because I knew about Sammie's illness and despite him repeatedly slandering me I hoped that whatever was going on in his head might one day get sorted out. Obviously that still hasn't happened.

There are lots of details about this and I kept records so I could refer back to them. I even emailed a response to myself while the details were fresh. The fact is that I've remained supportive of his cabs, because they are great. I still have the first one I got and I bought a used Slap G cab.

So let's start with my history with Pastor Sammie Glass and Glasstone cabinets. I think that's pretty well documented here on Talkbass that I've been a supporter of his since he came up with the Lil G cabinets. I received no payment for helping him out with my knowledge of the market, testing products and answering questions. He gave me a cabinet to use and later I gave him $250 towards another cabinet I never received. I wasn't in a hurry so it was no big deal. I have no 1099's from Glasstone. I defended the Lil G cabs because of my experience with them and I considered them a legitimate design, unlike a few here on Talkbass.

Here's the fundamental problem with what he's saying, starting with this quote from Pastor Glass' Facebook page:

"Boom Bass Cabinet (BBC) is not nor has it ever been a manufacture of any Glasstone products, I repeat never".

The problem with that was that he publicly thanked Drue and BBC for building cabs for him AND for getting them into Washington Music Center, the biggest dealer in our area and one of the biggest independents in the country. He did this multiple times predating that post. Maybe he forgot? The goal from the beginning of this appears to have been to shut Boom Bass Cabinets down, plain and simple. But it's based on a clear untruth. Coming from him, that's disappointing to say the least. Instead of shutting down, Drue stopped making Lil G's, that he had permission from Pastor Glass to build, and starting with the Tank 1215 did a redesign.

So, since he clearly has access to Talkbass, if he could clear up how he could thank someone for something he later vehemently denies having any knowledge of a month later it would be greatly appreciated as a start to finally clearing up this slander. We've let this go on long enough.

Then we can get into why the Lil G and BBC Tanks are fundamentally different, particularly in performance. Pastor Glass doesn't know what's going on inside of the cabs, it's definitely not a wheel or color upgrade.

As far as me saying the same positive thing about Glasstone and BBC cabinets, that really shouldn't be hard to figure out how it is not deceitful. AT THE TIME, my Lil G cab was the best cab I'd owned... until I got my BBC Tank 1012. If that's suspicious, sorry. It's also true.

:woot:. Wow! Now this should be entertaining to say the least. I know there's two sides to the pancake but that's a helluva a statement. Hmmmmm.......

Thanks for understanding that there is more than his side to this. The crazy thing was that many of the same folks who "liked" his Facebook posts thanking BBC liked the posts completely contradicting it around a month later. They ran with it, not even considering the validity. But then again, a pastor (of his own church) was saying this. Many of them contacted me to find out what was up and then found out I was one of the people he was accusing. So I pointed them to that post. Mind blown. Facebook came in very handy.

That gratitude post was just deleted this year. I'm surprised that it took that long, I've sent lots of people to his Facebook page over the last 18 months so that they could see it for themselves, including several TB members. They're as confused about this as we are... why did he do it? Something happened and he has yet to tell either of us what it was.

So this won't just be my word against his. It's his word against his too.

I don't want to get too involved in this; but, it is legal to use designs if they are not protected by patent or copyright. OTOH, it is also good life practice to be forthright and ethical in business dealings. I have never known Brad to be unethical. He may be tough sometimes; but, certainly not unethical. I hope Rev Glass works out the business side of producing and marketing his cabs. Business is tough. Meanwhile, it seems Brad & Co are doing just fine. FWIW/$0.19

Thanks, I really appreciate that.

I have a history of lending a hand, not looking for anything in return and having it blow up in my face. Over and over again. I'd like to think I've finally learned my lesson. From people keeping my basses when I've loaned them out (twice) to others stiffing me on payments when I let them take something before they've paid for it to this thing. This one is particularly annoying because as far as I can tell Drue and I are the only people giving Pastor Glass that kind of help we did while looking for nothing in return... yet in the bat of an eye he turned on us with no explanation, just this story that is at odds with his previous statements elsewhere. He's been on this campaign to smear Drue, Boom Bass Cabinets and myself since August of 2014. Because he was a friend we decided to take the high road... in hindsight we probably should've confronted him immediately on Facebook. He refused to correspond with us directly while this unfolded other than the text he sent me calling me a thief and pretty much the same with Drue.

To be clear, Drue stopped making the Glasstone cabs, which he clearly had authorization from him to build and sell, when Pastor Glass changed his mind and started calling us thieves. The Glasstone cabs, which he made with Pastor Glass' permission, had Glasstone and BBC labels on them. Clearly it's possible to thank someone for doing something and then vilify them for doing the exact same thing... but it doesn't make any sense. We'd like to know once and for all what exactly happened with him.

We think that our BBC Tank models are fundamentally different enough to not be the same design. They certainly perform differently. That's how we moved forward from this. Now if he'll come here and finish what he started and explain how he could thank BBC then have no idea why he thanked BBC we can really move on. I wish him the best and hope he'll finally sort this out. We've been waiting far too long and we certainly never needed the drama.

Well that was quite the interesting development. I wondered what happened to Glasstone/Lil G cabinets, there was a bit of hype for them for a brief period.

Hope the drama clears up for you, running a business is enough hassle in my books.

Thanks. I agree, business is enough of a hassle. The stories I could tell. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother;). Then I step back and look really hard at the big picture. In this case I think our success is likely a part of the problem. We'll see.

BTW there really wasn't hype about the Lil G cabs. They were ground-breaking IMO and I meant ever word I've said about them.

Everything else aside, how are the BBCs "fundamentally different"?

Thanks for asking... great question.

Sealed vs. ported cabs.
The lower driver is the predominant sound coming out of the three lower openings on the sealed cab.
The combination of the two main drivers comes out of the single port on the ported cab.
The dispersion of lows and mids to the sides and rear on the sealed cab vs. front only for the ported.
Yes, more than just lows come out of the lower openings. We checked.
The upwards and forward dispersion because of the tilt and the orientation of the tweeter vs. largely forward only on the ported.

As we've been saying, our goal was to address the issues we've come across as gigging bassists. We think that we have met that goal.

It's not a novel design. There's no advantage, other than putting a big hump in the response where some people may like it. Others may not.

Which Tank model did you hear and where was the big hump?

I realize that by not addressing these things some people may assume they're true.

And if there were a "big hump where some people may like", how would that not be an advantage for those people?

So, you're not denying that BBC and the Tank owe a lot to Mr. Glass' work and design.(?)

After everything I've written in this thread, that's what you chose to take away from it?
:D

Remember, I was involved with the Lil G after the first prototype. I'm not asking for credit for any of my input, that's water under the bridge.
:)

I'm saying Glasstone owes a lot to BBC's and my work. Work that he denies knowing about.

I said the cabs are fundamentally different. I then expanded on what those differences are, at your request. They're very different cabs at this point. Was there something you're not clear on? I also explained how what he PM'd you and possibly others was a blatant lie. Just to be clear in case you missed that. And yes, I have hard proof and have shown some of it to several people who know all of us personally, so him erasing it came too late. And Pastor Glass hasn't shown up here to explain any of it.

If what I'm saying is true, do you have a problem with Pastor Glass lying on us? Or are you just ignoring that, just believing what he said and carrying his water for him?

What's your stake in this, Dave? This really isn't complicated. I know what your participation looks like to me, since you want to be involved lay you cards on the table. Pastor Glass apparently isn't willing to do any more than traffic in the same contradictory nonsense as he has been since the summer of 2014.

Frankly this back channel approach to character assassination is pretty desperate IMO. And transparent too. But I'm more than happy to deal with it. Like I said, let's get this over with once and for all.
:)

In case anyone else is having difficulty with this, these are the things that are DIFFERENT about our cabs and the Lil G. Hit me with any questions.
:)

Just to be clear, I'm glad we're going to finally clear this up publicly, the smear campaign has gone on long enough.

Edit: I've been told by Dave Hill that I haven't done a good job of explaining what happened. Then again many seem to understand it fine. Anyone who is not clear on any of this can feel free to ask me whatever you want, I'm more than happy to at least put the facts out here. That's where all of this negative nonsense falls apart.

Or we can stop and move forward. As long as we get the innuendo out of the way, I have no problem with that.

I'm also told that despite laying out these differences he feels that the cabs are the same. Despite the fact that they function differently by all accounts. While I can't fathom how someone could seriously come to the "rip=off" conclusion, there it is.
