Broughton Audio Super Thread

Does it have a Effects loop?

I've been considering a change up from my current Ampeg BA-110 for my small on the go/practice combo amp.

It's alright tonewise, nothing spectacular, but I really wish it had an Effects Loop, so I could just run out from a Broughton Pre and right into the power amp/cab.

Come to think of it, might make as much sense to just get a small lightweight Power Amp of some kind, to pair with the SSDI or P-15, and my existing smaller Mesa Boogie Subway 112 cab... Maybe one of the Quilters or a Baby Sumo?

Hmmm...

Anyway, if anyone has any good smallish lightweight combo suggestions with an effects loop, I'm open to suggestions!
No effects loop in the Session 77, but the preamp is very neutral. Big, clean, transparent whoomph in a small, reasonably priced package. Headphone out, line out, aux in. You could feed a preamp into the aux in, you’d just need a 1/8” adapter jack.

I don’t need it to be too loud, I just want it to not take up so much room as my RS212. I never gig, very Seldom ever jam with friends. I really only struggle to play Stevie wonder when I do turn my amp on.

the new Ampegs look neat, but I wonder how much difference there is between those and the other class d combo amps besides looks.

Phil Jones stuff is good, I had a briefcase for a while

Give the phil jones double four a look. You can even run it off a laptop battery for portable.

I came across this video earlier. Not exactly a Broughton video, but it does a really good job of explaining how something similar to the RFE works, and why you want . . . nea, NEED . . . one. This actually helped me finally wrap my head around the thing and know better how to dial it in.

How do we feel about Ashdown stuff?
or the Traynor Combos?

Haven't played Ashdown for a long time, and never in a combo format. I did not choose to purchase... the stuff was OK... but not great. Some people like the Traynor combos. To me they sound "voiced". Lots of volume, but kind of muddy. The EQ doesn't seem all that easy to dial in. I much prefer things like the Fender Rumble, or the GK MB210. What kind of power and weight would you prefer?

It would be just for at home stuff with the option of jamming with friends once in a blue moon. Price, power, and decent sound are what I’m considering the most. I usually leave my amps flat and turn the tone knob on my bass though.

doesn’t take much to struggle to play Stevie wonder

I have a Little Bastard all tube head, excellent tube sound and grit/OD. There was a awesome fliptop version UK built, along with a UK and China built head. I can attest even the china head is really nice, with good build and components. Only 30 watts, but a very loud 30 watts

I’ve had a GK mb115 combo for about 10yrs. I mostly use it for at-home jamming and occasional practices. It works great, is super lightweight, and is plenty loud. I used it for a community theater gig last winter with no PA support (for the bass, at least), and it filled the theater just fine on its own. Granted, I also hit it with compression and a HPF/LPF to make it a bit more efficient, and I add some tone shaping up front usually via some pedal preamp, but it worked flawlessly.

I would suggest a GK MB200 head, and whatever cab you feel like pairing with it. I know it's not a combo, but the MB200 is tiny, has a very good EQ, and also has aux in and headphone out - actually, it's got a line out and balanced DI out, too. So if you just want to plug in a laptop or iPhone or whatever, and rock out with headphones, you don't have to involve the whole combo if you don't want too. I use mine with a an Ampeg 210AV. That would certainly survive in a situation with a couple of guitar players. But any reasonably efficient cab would work.

I use a Sonic Farm 2500w Tantra and a Barefaced 810 for that. But that's just me. It's a big living room :)

It's true... Maroon 5 uses @DirtyDuke's living room when prepping for their wedding gigs.
