If it was me, I’d probably take the opportunity to really get a custom “built for me to my exact specs” bass. There are several builders I’d consider. I adore Spectors and Dingwalls so they’d be my top 2 options, but I’d probably also look at a Marleaux Consat or a Lefay multi scale or something like that (if you can’t tell, I’m not really into FSOs or “vintage” instruments).

Come to think of it, a nice headless, maybe even a multi scale one, would be something to look at for me. I’ve never owned a headless but always kinda wanted to.

In all reality, if I just had that type of money to spend, I’d take the wife to go see some of the awesome things I’ve always wanted to see and want to see before I die: Rome and Pompeii and all the ancient Roman ruins, The pyramids at Giza and Luxor/Karnak/Valley of the Kings, the Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat, etc. Possessions are nice and all, but memories and experiences are really where it’s at.

Background for your assignment:

I have basses and amps and guitars and P and J and fretless and fretted and ABG and 4 and 5 string and semi hollow and active and passive. And a ton of pedals.
I have no debt aside from mortgage and that’s almost finished too. Kids college is covered and thanks to 1 academic and 1 athletic scholarship I didn’t even use what we saved for education. My car is paid for. Point is, don’t come back with savings or investment advice or you’ll receive a C-.

In September I’m getting $10,000 that’s not a commission, not a paycheck or any part of my salary. Nice problem to have, sure. And my wife doesn’t even like “stuff” let alone bass stuff. I don’t need to spend it all but I have been thinking it would be fun to get a bass that I don’t have or necessarily need but something kinda cool.

So hit me up. What should I get for No Reason?

And if y’all don’t give me any great ideas I’ll just get a Kenny Wayne Shepherd Stratocaster, bound and blocked, looks like a Jazz bass sort of. So technically it’s up to you to maintain the bass/guitar universal balance.

Regarding the bass, I'm a big Alembic fan. I don't know how you can go wrong and they hold their value.
This was 1/3 cost of $10,000 so buy 3 of them!

I'd be on the hunt for a used Carl Thompson, or look for a Wal or Zon or something. Though personally, I'd never spend that much money on a bass. You should pay for a nice trip for you and the wife.

You seem to have all the gear you need.

May I suggest good custom IEM and good custom ear plugs (those with filters).

Use the balance to make a bass related trip. I missed the Marcus Miller residence at the NYC Blue Note last month which seemed to be 3-4 nights of incredible musicianship. And bring the wife
