Well, we didn't have as many people as we expected. Many people who said they would be there decided to forget or not show up. But we still had a great time anyway. A good friend of mine did a little opening act and he was amazing as always. We took the stage and cranked through our songs and the crowd seemed to really enjoy what we did so that was good.

Well, we didn't have as many people as we expected. Many people who said they would be there decided to forget or not show up. But we still had a great time anyway. A good friend of mine did a little opening act and he was amazing as always. We took the stage and cranked through our songs and the crowd seemed to really enjoy what we did so that was good.
We are playing in Wilcox AZ at the Palace Saloon this weekend. Always packed on Saturdays without music so it should be a blast.
The place dates back to 1905 when it was a meat market and is the oldest continuing mercantile in Arizona.

Got a pretty run of the mill (for my band) show at a bar in Ames tonight. Should be decent.
Tomorrow, though, we're opening up for The Wedding, which should be a total blast. I can't wait for that. They're kind of an underground band, but they have a huge following in central Iowa.

Playing at Stella's in Forest Lake MN Saturday night. Small place, they like us to keep it down. Drummer is playing electronic kit, and he did fine the last two times we played there. I'll be using my Trace Elliot BLX-80 again. The stage is a small corner triangle, and the BassMan10 takes up too much room.
Playing in church on Sunday morning. I'll be a little sleepy.

My country band played Fri and Sat at our favorite bar in Manassas VA. Our keyboard player was on vacation with his family, and wasn't expected for the weekend. I enjoyed the extra room onstage that his absence provided.
First the good news: We played neither Sweet Home Alabama nor Old Time Rock 'n' Roll the entire weekend! Oh, the ecstasy!
Fri night, halfway through the first set, I noticed that I'd forgotten to run a cord to the PA from my amp. Oops! So I turned up a bit. There weren't many people in the club, so I decided to run a little test, and leave the amp unconnected, to see if anyone would say anything. Not one word from anyone, including the sound man!
Should I be worried?
Sat night was much more busy. The keyboard player surprised us by showing up just before start time, and playing the night. I hadn't been expecting him, and I found myself grumpy that he'd shown up. Why would I feel like that?

Saturday gig went pretty well, except we had a tendancy to speed up. I ended up playing on the back edge of the beat trying to hold the drummer back, didn't work all that well. It was bad enough that the lead guitarist noticed. Possibly because three of us were in one time zone, the drummer in the next.
Sunday morning was rough, but OK until the battery in my Carvin died. One of the singers got me a new one, still no sound, went to the church's spare 4 string (passive). Played OK I guess. No one heard, at least not in the second service. We have a silent stage, except for drums, with Avion in-ears. Sound guys usually forget to put much bass or guitar into the house mix, today no exception from the family's reports. I'll have to post on the unexpected outcomes from switching to Aviom monitors some day.
And backing up to Friday - We had a 2 night gig offered that we couldn't do since we were already booked. Lead guitarist and I went to check the place anyway on Friday night. Band was a 3 piece. Talked to them, they haven't played together in a year, nice guys, went to HS together, had a band, now live 200 miles from each other and only get together for gigs. I was asked to sit in, then they called me up to the stage during second set and I played a couple numbers. Went well, drummer was really solid, guitarist was easy to read. As we left the bassist faked feeling feeling sick so I'd have to sit in the rest of the night. Really nice guys. I may follow up with the guitarist/vocalist to see if he needs a sub for the bassist - not to horn in on a gig but to start a relation ship between the bands (we need subs sometimes too). I'd probably try to steal the drummer if he didn't live over 100 miles away.

Didn't post the "before", but my band had our first gig this past weekend. We're an originals band, three piece, with a lot of synth and prerecorded material - in other words, there's a LOT that can go wrong.
This was kind of a warm up gig so we played at a house warming party in the basement. There were about 30 - 40 people crammed into the area.
THE GOOD:
People said we sounded great, and that they would never have guessed that we hadn't been doing this for a while. They said everyone seemed to be in sync and really liked a few of the songs.

While playing, I noticed people stepping outside. Apparently we were far too loud. The basement had horrible acoustics, leading to the drums reverberating throughout the small space, meaning that the rest of us had to turn up. Apparently that led to bleeding ears to those who were actually in front of the PA speakers. At first I thought that we had completely lost the crowd, but it was later revealed that we sounded a lot better from outside.
THE UGLY:

OK, well, the first show wasn't as run-of-the-mill as I thought it would be. My band plays fairly aggressive rock 'n' roll with some hardcore influences, and we mainly play for a younger crowd. This show was an 18 and over show, and the soundguy even warned us that the clientele was mainly "Fratboy douchebags." We were playing with one other band, an ok nu-metal band (Think huge scooped mids, too much modulation on the guitar, and overdone dynamics). It turns out that the bar wanted there to be music played from about 10 or so till 1. The problem here is that my band is used to playing shows with at least two or three other bands, and we do all originals, so we really only have about a half-hour set. The drummer of the other band asked if we could make the set longer, and I replied that we could maybe squeeze another ten minutes of awkward stage banter out. Once we actually did play, it went pretty well. There were some old drunk rednecks that walked out on our second song, but other than that, we at least didn't chase anyone away.
The show on Saturday was amazing, though. We played really well, we had a pretty decent reaction from the crowd, and the other bands played really well. It's been a while since I've had that much fun at a show.
Last Sunday morning, a leader and good friend calls at 8:30 in the morning. He was throwing himself a birthday party ( and a "I beat bladder cancer party) at his house which is huge. I helped him pay for it during the 80's. Turns out his regular bass player was stuck in Buffalo with a bad car and he asked me to play. My pleasure. Good food, good times, good music.

got a gig this weekend.
This ska band from the mid-late 90's has reformed, and we are just starting out playing gigs around the area. Have some cool shows coming up, and the biggest one will be at the middle east in cambridge on halloween playing with Big D and the Kids table.
that was just a brief intro to the band
anyway, so this weekend we are playing an american legion hall in norwood mass. nothing fancy at all, but i finally get to bring my NEWLY UPGRADED rig.
I recently purchased the Ampeg BXT4x10 to go with my Ampeg BXT1x15. These will be run by the modified neo pak 3.5 ( from 4 ohms, down to handle 2ohms)
it sounds awesome at practice, and im sure it will be great at the show!

Been so busy the last 2 weeks I haven't had any time to post, but I've had a bunch of gigs with The Fabulous Bender Boys at Jamboree In The Hills, Wheeling's Waterfront Wednesday, Oglebay-Resort, and The Upper Ohio Valley Italian Festival. I also did a show with Tristen "T-Bone" Smith at Jamboree In The Hills. I'll catch up the details next week when things start to ease up a little.

I sort of have a gig tomorrow... I play double bass in a community orchestra and we have a concert on Sunday for the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Definitely the biggest concert I've done. They are expecting up to 5000 people. I can't wait 
(now if only I could play Mozart).

Landed the job with the band I played a few songs with 3 weeks ago. We have a gig Saturday not sure what to expect as I have never been to this particular venue. The old bass player is going to cover the remaining shows (this weekend & next) with me sitting in for a few songs here & there. After next week he's gone.
I'm anxious to try out my Peavey rig in a live environment. Recently bought a Tour 700, 4-10 cab & 1-15 cab, to back up my Thunderbird & Warlock basses. Hoping to add a Warwick 5 string next!
The band was wondering how long it would take me to come up to speed. I can tell you that in less then two weeks when we reconvened for practice, we ran thru every one of their songs from each set list with minimal issues. The only thing the singer could say Sunday after finishing the 3rd set was "wow, we answered the question of how long we will be down as you come up to speed."
I'll check back in Sunday.
