Played Stella's in Forest Lake, MN last night. Expected it to be quiet, or even cancelled, with the snow and the below 0 cold. Turned out there were more people in the place than ever. Had a pretty good night. It's been over a month since the last gig for me, no practices with this band, so plenty of mistakes - all around, not just me. People seemed to like us though, and we even had a birthday boy turning 42 with a woman on each arm. Yea we did. Yea it was cheezy. And no one went home in the Big White Van with the flashing red lights this time..

It went pretty well. Not real busy Friday night, but a decent crowd Saturday, and they were partying hearty. So a nice sendoff.
I had a strange encounter Friday night. Just before the first set, a woman I'd never seen before introduced herself as the ex-wife of the singer in my new band. She proceeded to tell me a bunch of negative stuff about him, including his 2 other exes and 9 children,
and a probable 18-month jail term for nonpayment of support in his near future. She strongly urged me not to join the band. All this was especially amusing in view of his wedding Saturday afternoon, which I attended, with all this information on my mind. The new band's drummer was the best man. After the reception, I discussed the encounter with him. He denied 2 of the 3 exes, and 4 of the alleged children, but confirmed the nonpayment of support, and the possible jail time. He dismissed the jail time by saying he's got a couple of replacements lined up already.
My issue is: I shouldn't have had to hear this from a stranger. When were they going to share this with me?
I didn't know these guys before joining. I'm trying not to conclude that they are weasels, until I've heard what they have to say about this. But I'm definitely PO'ed. If I'm being played for a sucker, I'll be gone.
Friday's gig got snowed out. Saturdays was a grand time. We had our old friend Doug Blair ( Lead guitarist from W.A.S.P.) show up so we jammed some Queen and Stevie Wonder tunes with him. And local Drummer Mike Tierney sat in for a James Brown Sex Machine funk fest.
No gigs this week cuz of Christmas but we're off for the ski resorts Next Monday for a short road trip before returning Wed for our Big New Years Payout!

Have a beach gig this weekend (Saturday), 4 bands at a nice beach house on the pacific, nice blend of styles from each band. One band's a very funky outfit with a great bass player.
Anywho... I'm trying to gather the troops for some practice today and our drummer (who refuses to have a cellphone, and thus, must usually be located through facebook) replies to my message saying he's messed up his knee and can't play until Saturday (if at all)...
The rest of us get to the singer/guitarist's studio, start going over some recorded tracks for our next album, and a friend of the band comes over to shoot the proverbial sh........ Next thing you know, he tells us how our drummer tore up his knee. Him and his girlfriend got hammered this last Saturday, got into a huge blowout of a fight (no surprises here), he wandered off into the streets. She follows him in her car, he gets in, they start fighting again and HE FREAKIN' JUMPS OUT WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING, gets his foot caught under the rear wheel and twists his knee.
This guy's a talented drummer (lets the sticks fly a little too often), but he's putting a 4 band event at our singer/guitarist's beach house in jeopardy because he can't keep his head on straight when he drinks... Good christ.

...and it looks like it's not going to happen. it wasn't until TODAY that he goes get checked out by a doctor. If he plays on saturday, he'll make it worse. And of all the weeks. Our standby's in Europe visiting his brother, a prior drummer is going to a civil wedding that day, and there's just no way in hell that we can find someone to learn 10-11 songs on Friday (really, who's gonna take the time to help out on the 24th/25th of December?).

No gigs (scheduled) til next year, but I'm still on the road. I'll be a Buckeye over the Christmas week. Still hopin' to pick up New Years eve.
We have a gig this Saturday night at a great little pub in Dogtown, St. Louis, MO. It's a late-nighter - 10 to 2:30... Nice little pub, great people, should be a killer show. I'll check in here post-gig.

anyways, they've really been mucking me around with it because at first they said I could play the gig, then they said that because of the alcohol, I wasn't allowed in (im 15). And now they've said that because I'm getting paid, I'm under a worker's licence which means I can play with my parents' permission! Oh and I was told that about 4 days ago and i have 60 songs to learn and I'm going up to see family and won't be back until Monday the 29th. w00t!!

Great gig! Lots of people - lots of dancing - the band was on - the kind of gig that makes gigging worthwhile.
The only not so great part was the 10 to 2:30 thing... I live about 45 minutes from this pub and making it home afterwards was a HUGE challenge. I minded my P's and Q's - one hefeweizen very early and lots of H2O all night - but lack of sleep and being extremely tired can make a long drive treacherous. It all turned out fine - I made it home. But next time I'll be knocking on a friend's door or something before trying to make that sort of trip THAT tired again.

Now I have New Years eve. Funny thing is: I asked the leader if he had someone on bass yet as I have done this gig with him on and off for at least 15 years. He said he may need me 'cause the guy who does most of his work may be out of town. Later on, he said it was covered. Got a call while in Ohio asking me if I'm still open. Now the gig is mine. I'll get the details Wednesday night
We have a place that stays open past 12:30 a.m.? Or, are you talking about someplace in the 'burbs or on the Eastside? I haven't lived in the 'Loo for a number of years, sounds good!
I'm a little late here. Did Friday and Saturday at the Buffalo Thunder Casino and Resort north of Santa Fe, decent crowd, weather was pretty chilly.
This Friday we play two shows, first is at the Martini Tree at Taos Ski Valley, 3 - 6, and then at Shadows in Taos, 9 - 12:30.

South City - Dogtown area. It's in the City of St. Louis and just got it's "open late" license. That's a good thing for those night owls who are getting last call just down the block at 1am - and for us who gets the late-late crowd bump!

I'm playing tonight at Ned Devine's in Centreville VA. It's our usual last-Tues-of-month gig, but this one falls on the night before NYE. I wonder if there will be a crowd, or will folks be saving it up for tomorrow night?
We play tomorrow night at the Rainbow Road in Rippon WV. Only about 36 miles from home, yay! Happy New Year, y'all!
Edit: Guess I'll never know about tonight. The drummer just called me from the club, we are cancelled, no notice. Several people, including the general manager, were "supposed to call" to let us know. No one did. The soundman drove up from Stafford, maybe 50 miles, for nothing.
I'm lucky, I was about 5 minutes from leaving home.

well... just got home from fla... a week of no sleep is taking its toll... but the hotel sucked bc it was booked with airline attendants and pilots that don't like 190 highschoolers running around... but i digress...
the disney parade was among the easiest i've ever done... less than a mile, but playing the whole time and comfortably warm... the citrus bowl... up at 6 so we could get to the arena for pictures... was comfortable then... but the sun got a little warm for the parade and we played almost the entire time... i know we arent georgia, but i guess we did pretty good other than a few lines being out of guide.
