It all went great!
We had a "setlist" of about 40 songs to pick from, and played three short sets of about 30 mins each - it's a pub so we only haveto play 9:30 - 11:30ish. We've all played most of the songs in other bands, and have a lyric book for the singer.
Filling the first set was always going to be tricky, so we had a couple of ringers who sing in bands drop by to get us started. From then it was full steam ahead - a couple of singers just blanked, most did OK, a couple REALLY blew us away. The bar owner sang the last two, so I take that as a good sign.
At one point a drunk girl kept comming up to me and asking to sing, but she kept doing it MID SONG, and didn't seem to get that we were signing up during the breaks. I was a bit worried she might be too drunk to get on stage, but I kept an eye on her for a few songs, and figured she was OK - as it turned out her singing wasn't great but she wasn't a problem at all.
We all made loads of silly mistakes - we were just concentrating on the vocals so hard, but the guys have ears like elephants. Lots of structural changes, skipping verses, looping the 4 bars for the vocal and other stuff like that, but we stayed locked (most of the time - ish ;-)) Even the drummer is totally tuned on and FOLLOWING the rest of the band - it's an honour playing with those guys.
It was also nice at the end of the night to get paid what our regular bands get paid to play there - the split it 3 ways instead of 5!!! Now we just need to book some more...

On Saturday, my son is marching in the St. Patricks day parade ( the big one, NYC) and I have to go. Thats gonna be like a gig.

Mad time right now. Last week had a rehearsal on Monday, Tuesday off, Wednesday gig, Friday gig, Saturday 2 gigs, rushing from one to the next, Sunday two gigs, rushing from one to the next also. Monday this week rehearsal, tuesday free yesterday gig, today (thursday) rehearsal, Friday gig, Saturday gig, Sunday gig.
I love the exitement of playing so many shows but it really makes you appretiate staying at home with the wife, cooking dinner and watching TV.
And every so often you need a break, but until then, play on.

My band The Black Karma Theory will be playing a show Sunday night around 6:00 PM. I've only played a few shows but so far the turnout has been great at them. Im hoping for the same we'll see how it goes....

Well, it's official. Here I am on a Saturday night, the first of 2 weekends in a row with no gigs, for the first time in a very long time, and I'm might just go nuts........on vacation at Disney world with the family, got here yesterday (Saturday) and won't be home until next weekend. 2 weekends, no gigs. I'm gonna go stir crazy, especially since I just got my new Bergantino IP112 on Friday (thanks tjoTim !!) and barely even got to plug it in to see that it worked!
I rarely get to spend this much time with my wife and my 2 boys (5 and 6 1/2 years old), and it's priceless time, but I'll be REALLY ready for the 2 gigs I have the last weekend this month.

OK. I got into the game with bass pretty late in life, at 25. Now I'm 30, and have a 4-piece rock/fusion/indie group with three kids in their early 20s (Alright I'm overstating - the drummer is still in high school.) These guys are stunningly talented and have a musical maturity far beyond their years. We've been playing together for three years, but tonight is just our second gig, and the second gig of my life.
We scored a spot at a place called Cat's Cradle, which is the historic mid-sized venue in this part of North Carolina. We've advertised widely (people at my work are like, "Woah! You're playing the Cradle?") We'll get to do a 45-minute set, for which we have prepared six originals. There are tightly composed sections as well as some completely free improv. We've been practicing our asses off and yesterday's rehearsal went brilliantly. I'm giddy as a schoolgirl.
I know a lot of you old hands are pretty far removed from the kind of naive enthusiasm I'm full of right now, but it sure is a rush.

Well, last night was the first public performance of Dick Cash. We are a 3 piece with the band leader as the singer/guitarist. We play a mix of 50s rock, roots & blues.
Overall, it went pretty well. As I've never played live with this group before I experienced a few things that made it... well, let's say interesting.
First of all, though I had carefully crafted a setlist to make sure
a) there was variety in the set ie one country-ish song followed by 50s rocker, followed by a blues song
b)alot of our songs are in E or A and I made sure we didnt have 7 songs in a row in the key of E
c) started the sets off with strong songs and ended the sets off with strong songs
The band leader completely ignored the setlist and just called songs at random. We all agreed on the setlist before hand, but no big deal. Just made things a little "adventerous" as the set structure was totally gone... and now I know next time to not bother writing a setlist.
We do the song Be-bop-alu-bop by Gene Vincent. I think its about a 3 minute song. We played it for about 25min. There were lots of people having fun on the dance floor so the leader just kept it going. Notable for sure.
We also played a song we never played before. The leader goes, "Play B / A / E like this...."
Turns out it was Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. Good song and it went over well.
One thing I will say, the band leader is great. Very charismatic and great with the audience. He often walked right onto the dance floor while soloing. People loved it as they danced around him.

Gigs done. Ended 1/2 hour early. $50 tip. Hardest part was finding a parking spot on the icy upper west side of NYC. But its history now.
Our gig went well. The Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo was in town on it's last night the night we played. We were probably one of the only rock bands playing in town; every country band in town was playing that night as well. So, the turn out was about half as much as we usually have. Most of the people that were there were those that usually follow and they supported us quite well.
our gig went great the setup was odd, the main act brokedown on the way so everybody left after the 3rd band event though there were 4 bands we played first had a great time
BEFORE: gig this Thursday, the 22nd. using my Peavey Mark VIII XP @ 2ohms at a gig for the first time w/ avatar neo212 and neo210. Will it perform? We'll see....
The band leader was talking with a friend at a Casino and the friend says, "I'm leaving. I've got dick cash."Ok, you'll need to give us the story on that band name.
For us, it works on so many levels.
At our last gig, we overheard someone say "He really is related to Johnny Cash".
This friday I'm playing with my friend Link Removed at The River 102.3 artist showcase. It's jazzy/folksy singer/songwriter music. A lot of fun to play, and it's basically my rock band backing him up, so we all play really well together (the 3 of us have been playing together off and on for 10 or 12 years now). Rehearsal last night went fairly well, and we have one more on thursday, so we should do great. It's a short set, though; only like 15 minutes. Should be a fun deal with a pretty big crowd, though...
The song "As For Me" on his myspace is a live recording of us at a coffee shop a few weeks ago. We took the song a little fast, so my part sounds a little too busy and rushed, but I'm still pretty happy with how it came out.
