Dave Boonshoft requires that any bass at the Aguilar booth have Aguilar pickups installed.

Aren't Jimmy's pickups wider than normal? I'm wondering how the Aguilar pickups were able to fit in an A/C without having gaps.
The short answer is, the video doesn't really do the bass justice. Honestly.It might just be the amp and Hadrien's hard 'at the bridge attack', but that bass sounds WAY less 'vintage' than the more traditional A-C build. Nice and mid warm and burpy though.
However, there are very few things I like less than an OB-3 in a Jazz bass
Yeah, like Tom says, don't read anything into the Aggie equipped RA5. But again, at least IMHO, it did sound really nice. Would I consider swapping my AC guts out for Aggie tho? Hell no.

The longer video that was removed had much better audio than the clip that was up. Sounded really good in that one - maybe the best I've heard Hadrien sound.

Maybe, but that would kinda defeat the purpose of showing off the Aggie pickups since the Jimmy's covers have the A/C logos on them.
I'm thinking this must be the case...looking at the video it's hard to tell with the angle but the pickups look to be standard sized. I'm going back and forth between the video and A/C pics and the width of Jimmy's pickups is very distinguishable.
I'm really bummed I missed that clip! I can easily imagine a fatter tone than his Smith giving really nice results.
Those definitely look like the regular size shells to me I doubt very much that Jimmy would do custom smaller routes and in doing so perhaps affect resale value and the ability to switch back to his pickups easily if the owner chose to do so...
It's more about the tone than aesthetics so I am sure Dave isnt concerned with the pick up casings on this one particular bass...
Any bass Jimmy has lent Aguilar for a show has had some kind of Aguilar piece installed.
Before it was just their preamps and now their pickups too.
It's been that way since I've been around Jimmy.
The alliance is that they are friends and industry coleagues... They borrow a bass and we borrow an amp, at least this past NAMM we did.
In case you guys weren't aware, Jimmy released shorter or more standard sized 5 string J pickups late last year... So that they could be installed in "standard" width J routes.
In the case of this RA, it is actually a Tom Barney bass with 18 mm string spacing at the bridge and the pickups were routed for the shorted length. A~C pickups can be put in with no modifications.

Cool. BTW, the silver one in the back in this pic is that "dedicated" bass I played (don't wanna' search for the OP right now, but maybe they'll chime in.) That bass was TOTALLY BADA$$. One of the punchiest AC's I've played in a long time. All the AC's there were really great, but this one just seemed to have a litte more of the "notes just seem to kind of explode out of that bad boy" thing going on. He should be very very happy with it.
