I am starting to get the idea in my head that I'd like a more authentic LG5, my current has an old growth honduran rosewood board, which is a little brighter then indian and it's finished in poly with the modern bridge. It's a great bass and crosses well to more bright LM type tones as well as a 60s vibe but I'm thinking when my LM5 arrives I may want a more vintage LG5, shot in nitro with a warmer board and bent plate bridge.

Can some of you speak to the differences in the LGs that are shot in nitro with a bent plate bridge vs. the more modern standard models?

Hey Pete,

Best suggestion - PM Basses55. He's done a lot of experimenting with different bridges on Jimmy's basses, and has a real solid take just "what does what" when it comes to the differences in sound that are minute and irrelevant to anyone but us bass players. ;)

Having had some experience with a bass that YOU are very familiar with, I can say that I think you are at least partly on the right track - the bent plate bridge has a more vintage sound to it for sure. You might want to try one on your current LG to see if it takes you in the right direction.

^ Don't get me wrong I really like my LG5 but it is on the bright side and to me it seems it mostly has to do with the honduran board. It also doesn't have that burp when you back off the neck PU by 20% either, but it's got a great jazz tone and slaps really well too.

I'd love to go LG5 nitro, bent plate, a Dalbergia board but I don't think that's possible...

Well, you DO have the bent plate bridge and Dalbergia board... :hiding:

I have no doubt that you like your LG5, but I do know where you are coming from. I've played a nitro/dalbergia/bent plate LG5 and it did sound "older", but I think you'll find that the vintage bridge and a string change might get you a lot closer than you may think, without buying another LG5.

Having said that, if what you really want is another LG5 to keep your LG5 and KPB5 company, then absolutely go for it. :bassist:

Almost forgot...

Try this for a "burpy" tone:

Put your bass into active mode. Dial back your neck pickup 10-20%. Set the master tone to half. Dial the treble and bass control right down to 0. Add a tiny bit of bass back in (maybe 10-20%). It worked wonders on my LG5 fretless with an ebony board, might work for you too...

My bass just doesn't do it that great, never has. I tried these settings and for me it's to muffled. On a real deal 60s jazz bass you leave the tone on full and just back off the neck PU. Not all 60s jazz but the good ones. I've got this extra special USA Lakland JO4 and that just burps like no other so whenever I do an AB it is disappointing. My LG5 beats it in every other way....

Hey Pete ... I think that your issues are stemming from both the poly finish and the modern bridge. I've played many AC's & I dig both finishes, but i find the poly basses to always be a bit brighter. My LG5 has an Indian rosewood board. I've had both the hipshot (modern) and the bent plate on my nitro LG5. The hipshot bridge is definitely brighter than the bent plate. It's got more sustain and gives the bass a bit more bite. I actually went back to using it after trying the bent plate for a year or so. I was intrigued by the bent plate when Jimmy first offered it and since i've been his guinea pig from day one, we put it on my bass and were both happy with the results in making the bass sound more vintage. After a while I switched back because I was playing more modern music & needed a brighter tone and more sustain. The hipshot seems to work best for this. I think that the bent plate would be a step toward what you're looking for, but i'm not sure what it'll sound like with the poly.

My LM5 isn't going to be ready until January so I've got plenty of time to think about it. Jason sounds like your leaning in the same direction, nitro, bent plate...When the time comes I'll have to have a rosewood discussion with jimmy.

BTW I decided to order the MONO M80 dual bass case. In the end when comparing it to the Incase I liked to two seperate compartments for each bass and it weighs 3 lbs less.

My wife works for Fox 5 news on 67th and 3rd, she's on maternity leave at the moment but a lot of her friends at work are planning to get to the Apollo if they haven't already.

We're both real big fans of the music in that show!
