i really like the look of #202 in Tom's Gallery. very plain, but elegant. great purchase!

Tom, i see #204 for sale now. couple questions for you:
  • what's the neck width at the nut?
  • is your default placement of the P pickup always so close to the neck in a P/J? i'm interested in your reasoning for doing so.
i always imagined if i was ever lucky enough to join this club, it would be b/c i bought a single cut, but the doubles are quickly growing on me! they're all such works of art, though. it's hard to settle on just one style.

My First C bass

Well-I took the ebay shortcut to getting into the club. I heard about C basses a while ago and have been following the thread and enjoying all the eye candy. Then I read Tom's bio on the website and it said something about ebay, so I headed over there and saw #202 sitting there looking like it needed and nice home and before I knew it I was hitting the "confirm bid" button.

#202 is a 2 piece mahogany body, one piece maple neck w/ ebony fretboard. It has Nordstrand 70s pups and it is a tone monster. I played it through my LMII/fEarful 15/6 setup, and man it just kills. I don’t describe tone very well, but it is bright on top and really present in the low-mids. I can really only describe it as a boutique tone that blows any Fender I have heard out of the water. And it is incredibly playable with low, easy action and well balanced. Of course, this is all stuff y’all already knew, but it is worth saying again. Also, I just love the subtle, elegant look of the wood.

Here are some pics, and I think you will understand my impulsiveness.

Attached are a couple of pics from my house. The first one is hanging on my wall in crappy lighting. But when I hung it up there my wife said it looks like art! The second has my happy ugly mug in it.

So far I only plan to change out the pups as the singles are too noisy for my church gigs. Right now I am debating between either Nordstrand NJ4SV or Delano JC 4 HE/M2 humbuckers that Brian Ristola at bestbassgear recommended. If anyone has suggestions/experience I am all ears.

My first practice with 'er will be Tuesday. I can't wait to hear it in the mix.

Now I have to start planning out my lightweight 5er!

Personally I couldn't decide either. So I got #202 for the exact reasons you pointed out- I love the simple beauty of it. And I can finally get the "j" tone I had in my head. But I love the single cuts too, so #215 (a ryan single cut) will be on it's way soon. Then my wife is cutting me off for like 5 years from buying basses!

Here is a pic of my first gig with #202-a halloween gig, and it isn't the best pic of the bass, but noone takes pics of the bass player - except maybe wavey davey and GBM for some reason :D

At the risk of stepping on Tom's reply,
I'm pretty sure the P picup is in the traditional location, that's a 24 fret neck and it just looks closer to the neck than a tradtional placement, the J is in the "70's" location, about a 1/4'" closer to the bridge.
I can tell you that this bass just kills. I got to play it at Tom's shop and for a couple of sets at a gig. Really great bass. Tom has some sound clips of me hacking away on it, both in a band setting and solo.

thanks for that. Tom and i have been emailing, hence the apparent lack of a response from him. and he sent me the clip of you playing that bass. it sounds awesome.

your comment about the longer fingerboard making the pickup appear to be more toward the neck is genius! i didn't even "pick up" on that looking at the photos. it's all falling into place...

Cool bass for sure. I admit I'm a abit jealous:o

Look forward to hearing how your new bass performs at practice.

I really liked #213 when I got her and almost turned around and traded her until I did most of a rehearsal with her. I'm not proficient with a fretless but 213 just feels like my bass and sounds awesome in a mix. So I traded some other stuff to get what I wanted.

Enjoy that bass. I'm broke now :crying:but really really want another clement.

P.S. - Here's some new Clement-related content: it's Clement #123 after I played it for a good while tonight. The amp head is by Frugal Amps; it's a conversion of a 1962 Hammond amp chassis with a Marshall Lite IIb circuit. #123 was sounding good, and as always was fun to play. After I took this photo, I plugged into a Fulltone Mini-DejáVibe and got #123 sounding like the rug looks. ;)
